ABOUT US VISIT OUR STORE SALES SPECIALS Antique Map-HAINAUT-HENAULT-BELGIUM-Ortelius-1580 Description: This map originates from the pocket atlas: Il Theatro ... moredel Mondo' Published ca. 1580 by Abraham Ortelius. Artists and Engravers: Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics. Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" the first modern"Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term"Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the"Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. Better known as Ortelius, was born in Antwerp and after studying Greek, Latin and mathematics set up business there with his sister, as a book dealer and'painter of maps' Traveling widely, especially to the great book fairs, his business prospered and he established contacts with the literati in many lands. On one such visit to England, possibly seeking temporary refuge from religious persecution, he met William Camden whom he is said to have encouraged in the production of the Britannia. A turning-point in his career was reached in 1564 with the publication of a World
1570 Ortelius Map of the World (first edition)
1570 Ortelius Map of the World(first edition) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Typus Orbis Terrarum. Description: A fine first edition third printing example of Aberham Ortelius' iconic 1570 map of the world. This map is the first map of the world to appear in a standard atlas and is thus of fundamental importance to the history of cartography. Centered on the Atlantic Ocean. The map, naturally, covers the entire world from pole to pole. The general presentation of an oval projection derived from earlier maps by Appianus and Bordonius. Cartographically it is derived from the world of Gerard Mercator(1569) Gastaldi(1561) and Gutierrez. On the verso, Ortelius mentions in his Catalogus Auctorum that he also apparently had access to and drew upon the world maps by Peter ab Aggere of Mechelen, Sebastian Cabotus ... moreof Venice, Laurentius Fries of Antwerp, Jacobus Gastaldi, Gemma Frisius of Antwerp, Guicciardinus of Antwerp, Doco ab Hemminga Frisius, and Orontius Fine of Paris. Our survey of this important map will begin in North America. Much of the continent is unexplored but here Ortelius has roughly followed the work and forms laid down by Gerard Mercator in 1569. Beyond known colonial centers in central Mexico and the West Indies, the cartography is largely speculative. The eastern seaboard juts noticeably eastward- a product of inaccurate measurements of longitudes and magnetic variation. No trace is to be found of the Mississippi River despite its c. 1540 discovery by Hernando de Soto and Moscoso. Place names north of Mexico nonetheless generally correspond to American Indian centers discovered by De Soto(east of Texas) and Coronodo(west of Texas) In the northeast the results of voyages of exploration of Giovanni de Verrazzano and Jacques Cartier are much in evidence with the St. Lawrence being clearly if exaggeratedly represented. The mythical kingdom of gold Norumbega is identified along the Atlantic coast roughly in the vicinity of the Penobscot River. Of the Great Lakes, the

Ortelius based his cartography for the map in large part on his own earlier map of Asia. Which in turn drew on a 1561 map of Asia by Gastaldi. The map would certainly give the European reader pause as it showed the"Tyrannical Turkish Yoke" as Ortelius worded it in his commentary) spanning three continents and stretching as far as the outskirts of Vienna. Wonderfully decorative and one of the most sought-after of all Ortelius maps, this well-preserved ... moreuncoloured example is more than four centuries old and is a strong impression exhibiting a rich patina that will make for an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Many of the ornate strapwork cartouches used by Ortelius' engravers were taken from a series of ornament prints published in the 1560s by the brilliant architect. Painter, designer and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. This magnificent decorative cartouche is embellished with winged sphinxes with sea serpent tails, putti, foliage, incense thuribles and the motto from Seneca's"Letters to Lucillo" which translates as"Through harmony small things grow greater, with discord the largest things fall to ruin" To get a sense of map detail. Consider that the distance from Constantinople to Sinop in northern Anatolia(here shown as"Ginopoli" measures just 4 cm actual size. Note naval battle in Mediterranean: A dotted line shows the limits of Ottoman territory within Europe. An ominous demarcation indeed to Ortelius's readers, especially when one considers that the 1683 Battle of Vienna when King John III Sobieski of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth finally defeated
1579 (1603) Ortelius Map CARIBBEAN Florida, Cuba + Western Mexico Fine Example!
Culiacanae Americae Regionis. Descriptio& Hispaniolae, Cubae, Aliqrumque Insularum Circumiacientium Delineatio 50 cm x 35.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1579, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original two-part map(Van der Krogt 9520:31) featuring a dramatic map of the Caribbean including south Florida and a map of Northwest Mexico from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Drawn by Ortelius himself. The elegant design and fine engraving work combine for what is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing composite maps of the entire Theatrum. Ortelius based the cartography on Spanish sources including the by the Royal Geographer and maps compiled by the ... moreastronomer and cartographer(1505-1567) One of the more sought-after of Ortelius maps. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The Mexico map presents dozens of exotic placenames- note large settlement of Villa St. Michaelis near modern Mazatl an and Culiacan shown with the modern spelling. A notation informs of silver mines in the mountains: An ornate strapwork cartouche informs the reader that"the anonymous author who determined the longitudes of this region of Culiacana did not use the Canary Islands as his baseline as does Ptolemy but instead used Toledo to the west in Spain as his meridian based on observations of eclipses. A barrier island that is often interpreted as indicating Baja California is shown. With a northern passage near Bahia Kino(Baiabachinana) but it is more likely just some confused cartography and not intended to denote the Baja peninsula. Note palm trees in"Palmetum" and Ortelius's 1579 publishing privilege while the Pacific is shown as"Sinus Caleforniae" in ornate calligraphy: Turning to the Caribbean map we find a handsome title

Barbariae et Biledulgerid. Nova Descriptio 47 cm x 35 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Northern Africa(Van der Krogt 8610:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Ortelius based the cartography in part on an earlier map by the Italian geographer(1500-1566) Adding notations from his own extensive scholarship. The map features fine decorative elements including elegant calligraphy, a handsome ship and two jaunty sea monsters. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an excellent presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with ... morea view of the many lakes that populate the interior. At right we see the city of Guargala- the caption has the curious notation that it is an"elegantly built city with an abundance of dates" and goes on to say the Guargalans. Due to a lack of other meat, feed upon ostriches. Lake Zis at centre is said to be popular with Arab hunters, while Tegazza at left is noted for its salt exports: A playful sea monster frolics between Malta and Tripoli: Morocco is shown in great detail. And with considerable accuracy compared to the continent's interior: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from"Galla" at lower left north to"Baiador" Boujdour) as seen in the photo below measures just 8 cm actual size: Another sea monster and a handsome ship are shown north of the Canary Islands: The Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself- w e present representative excerpts below based on the English translation used in the 1606 London edition of the Theatrum: They which dwell in cities are very ingenious in Architecture and such like Mathematicall inventions. Which a man may easily gather by their rare and artificial workmanship sh
1667 Scarce Ortelius/Scipion Banca Map of East Indies, Japan
1667 Ortelius/Banca Map- India Giovanni Botero was an Italian priest and geographer who wrote his main work'Relationi Universali in 1591. This was re-issued several times and the 1599 edition is especially noteworthy for using a complete set of Ortelius miniature maps engraved by Pietro Marchetti and originally issued a year earlier by the same company. La Compagnia Bresciana. The last issue, a very scarce one, Il Theatri del Mondo' was by Scpion Banca in Venice in 1667 This attractive. But bizarre map of India, the East Indies and Japan, comes from the Banca edition. The map is only just recognisable to the modern eye with a narrow India, a wierd scattering of islands around Borneo and the Philippines and a totally unrecognisable Japan. A huge mass(New Guinea? appears in the bottom left while the west coast of America looms very ... moreclose to Japan in the top right. This is a wonderful addition to collectors of the cartographically bizarre! The map measures 3" by 4" and is in very good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 340 years old. Ortelius based the cartography in part on earlier maps by the Italian geographers(1500-1566) and(1520-1576) Adding notations from his own extensive scholarship. The map also presents a detailed albeit quite confused inset map of the Congo River and environs based on a map compiled by the Italian scholar(1533-1604) from Portuguese sources. A true masterpiece of the engraver's art. ... moreThe map features a florid and flamboyant title cartouche, elegant calligraphy, superb decorative elements including three ships and a sea monster. Moreover, this exceptionally well-preserved example is enhanced by superb hand colour work of the finest calibre that will make for an impressive presentation if matted and framed. The splendid title cartouche is one of Ortelius' most ornate with twin putti wielding spears. Twin angel figures with fruit baskets, a lion-footed baroque"frame, lion head medallions and a duo of sphixes for good measure: The inset map of a"New Representation of the Christian Kingdom of Congo in Africa" is of particular interest. Probably based by Pigafetta on a manuscript map by the explorer Duarte Lopez who reported the Kingdom of Congo to extend some 2750 km from north to south. Note"Anzicana" populated by"anthropophagi" I.e. cannibals. In the text on verso(see 1606 English translation below) Ortelius claims that h uman flesh is openly sold in the shops and meat markets of this land. as beef and mutton is amongst us. 1595 Lovely Ortelius Map of England
1595 Ortelius Map- Anglia Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. This map is from the 1595 Latin 2nd Galle edition. This lovely map of England and Wales shows it aligned with north to the right. A common occurrence in sixteenth century maps. The map ignores counties and marks the major cities and rivers with a sense of hilly topography in the centre. ... moreThe map measures 4.5" by 3.5" Has wash hand colouring, and is in very good condition.
