Thanks to the close contact between Ortelius with Luis Teixeira, the most modern map in 1595 was added to the Theatrum. FOR MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE WRITE US Powered by The free listing tool. 1603 Ortelius Map PRESTER JOHN AFRICA Mythical Ruler Superb Decorative Elements
Presbiteri Johannis Sive Abissinorum Imperii Descriptio 44 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt#8720:31) of central and northeast Africa including the Arabian peninsula from the 1603 Latin Edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. One of the most famous maps of the Theatrum. Ortelius here presents a large part of Africa as the realm of the legendary. A powerful Christian emperor thought to rule over most of the continent. Rumors of this mythical figure surfaced during the time of the Crusades, with his kingdom usually said to be located in Asia. Although many educated people doubted his existence, the myth persisted into the time ... moreof Ortelius. It was then thought that Prester John's kingdom was in Africa, perhaps due to the presence of Christians in Abyssinia. For the cartography Ortelius drew upon Gastaldi's 1564 wall map as well as Ptolemaic sources. Creating what is one of the most sought after and well known 16th century maps of Africa. Featuring two flamboyant cartouches and wonderful decorative elements including sea monsters, elephants, a cannon-firing dhow and fanciful Ptolemaic geography, this well-preserved example of this Ortelius classic exhibits fine hand colour work and will make a superb presentation if matted and framed. There are two magnificent cartouches- the first bearing an imaginary escutcheon(Insignia" of Prester John describing him as"born from the tribe of Judah and the son of David and Solomon" and some supposed him a direct descendant from the Kings of Israel. Legend had him also taking the name of David in papal style at his supposed coronation; thus the"Titulus" inscription refers to him as"David Supremus. The inscription goes on to list all the various kingdoms under his exalted rule: The second title cartouche announces"A Descript

1603 Ortelius Map HOLY LAND Ornate Cartouches, Dramatic Jonah & Whale Vignette
Terra Sancta 50 cm x 37 cm copperplate engraving. 56 x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1584, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the classic map of the Holy Land(Van der Krogt 8150:31. Laor 543) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. One of the more decorative maps of the Theatrum. Ortelius here presents an eastern oriented map based on cartography collected by Dutch astronomer Peter Laicksteen who visited Palestine in the 1550s and whose work was expanded upon by the geographer(1525-1603) in the production of a wall map of the region in the 1570s. Extending from Beirut to Gaza along a somewhat distorted coastline. The"sideways" eastern orientation of the map became a model for later mapmakers ... moresuch as Hondius and was arguably the definitive European cartographic conception of the region for the better part of half a century. The map features an ornate title cartouche with three vignettes of the life of Jesus, a flamboyant mileage scale with a gorgon head and a spectacular scene at lower left of Jonah being thrown overboard to the whale. This well-preserved example of the map is enhanced with hand colour work of the very highest order, and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The title cartouche credits Laicksteen and Sgrothen and features three miniature(3 cm diameter) vignettes of the crucifixion. Nativity and resurrection. Many of the ornate cartouche"frames" used by Ortelius' engravers were derived from a series of ornament prints published in the 1560s by the brilliant architect, painter, designer and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries: Turning to the map itself. We find the precise calligraphy and skilled engraving work typical of Ortelius maps- to get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Jerusalem to Hebron as seen below measures just 6 cm actual size. Note pictorial west of. But"beneath" Jerusale
1603 Ortelius Map VALENCIA Spain - Flamboyant Decorative Elements, Fine Example!
Valentia Regni 50.5 cm x 39 cm copperplate engraving. 56 x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1584 or thereafter, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the classic map of the Spanish(Van der Krogt 6155:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Here Ortelius drew upon data compiled by the humanist and rhetorician(1527-1592) and a 1568 map by the astronomer and geographer(1520-1591) for this"sideways" western oriented map. The map stood as the definitive depiction of the region for many years. And was more or less copied by Blaeu, Hondius and others. 1603 Ortelius (Teixeira) JAPAN "Island" of Korea, China Coast ICONIC CLASSIC MAP
Iaponiae Insulae Descriptio 48.5 cm x 35.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1595, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt 8450:31) of Japan from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. One of the most famous and influential maps published in the Theatrum, Ortelius drew upon a manuscript map he received in late 1592 from the Portugese Jesuit scholar and mathematician who served as Royal Cartographer in the Spanish court. The first map of Japan to be published in an atlas. This map was also the first European map to depict Japan with any precision and served as the principal European conception of the region for the better part of a half century. The map is a fascinating ... moremixture of surprising accuracy and woeful speculation- note the insular Korea- and its historic importance is indeed significant. The first western map to clearly show Kyushu, Honshu and Shikoku clearly separated and in recognisable form, the map is beautifully engraved with elegant calligraphy, two ornate cartouches and three finely rendered ships with this well-preserved example exhibiting hand colour work of the very highest order. One of the most sought-after of all Ortelius maps, this fine example will make an important addition to any cartographic collection related to Japan and an elegant impression if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with Kyushu. It appears that Teixeira. Who never visited Japan, simply copied the map from an unknown Portugese source. Whoever the actual author of the map was, he clearly had access to Japanese sources for the map as some of the cartography contains information outside the realm of European exploration at the time. No previous European map even approximated the correct proportions of Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku, nor had some of the northern and eastern parts of Honshu yet been charted by Europeans. Note promin

Map: Africae Tabula Nova, by Abraham Ortelius, 1570
This striking map is one of the cornerstone maps of Africa and remained the standard map of Africa well into the seventeenth century. It was designed by Abraham Ortelius from elements of contemporary maps by Gastaldi. Mercator, and Forlani and was incorporated into Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1570. Often considered the world’s first modern atlas. Theatrum was at the time the most expensive book ever published. Despite this. It was still very popular and went through 31 printings from 1570 to 1612, with a total of approximately 8175 copies printed. It is estimated that there are currently approximately 275 loose copies of this map in circulation. This beautiful map was engraved by Frans Hogenberg who engraved many of the maps for the Theatrum. This example was obtained already framed and matted. So the reverse is not visible and the exact ... morepublication date not known, however, this map is certainly from an edition between 1598 and 1612 because it shows the defect in the title cartouche which appeared sometime between 1595 and 1598, due to a crack in the copperplate, which progressively worsened with each edition. Regardless of the exact publication date. The date of"1570" is clearly shown in the title cartouche. At some time between 1606 and 1612 the date was removed, though some 1612 editions have the date and others do not. This map is beautifully period hand colored and in very good condition(a few age spots, no losses to plate area) as professionally framed and matted over 10 years ago. Plate dimensions are 375 mm x 504 mm(14 3/4" x 19 13/16" and the framed dimensions are 537 mm x 645 mm(21 1/8" x 25 3/16" Having acquired a small collection of antique maps at a very reasonable price from a private party, we can sell this fabulous map for far less than you will find it currently offered anywhere else, with most copies selling for between $1500 and $4000. And Ortelius based the content of the map on classical sources including Virgil, Pliny, Plutarch and Livy with the cartographical source an earlier map compiled by Italian geographer Girolamo Bellarmati in 1536. On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where ... moreplaces are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. In the richly detailed historic maps of the Parergon. Ortelius was able to employ his vast knowledge of the classical world to create extraordinary cartographic and scholarly depictions of the era as it was understood in the Renaissance, as this finely crafted map amply demonstrates. Duke of Savoy, during an expedition he sent into Provence ostensibly on behalf of the Catholic League but more likely to explore his options for an invasion to further his aspiration to the French throne, a plan that would benefit from an expertly ... moredrawn map of the region(many towns appearing for the first time on a map) and compiled by a Juge Royal no less. The Peace of 1593 brought such plans to an end with Henry of Navarre taking the French throne. And Bompar's map found its way to Ortelius resulting in this magnificent copperplate engraving. In this form the Bompar-Ortelius map became the definitive standard map of Provence for decades, with close copies published by Hondius, Blaeu and others. Beautifully engraved with fine detail and a wealth of flamboyant decorative elements, the map is arguably the most sought-after regional map of France from the Theatrum. Moreover. This exceptionally well-preserved example is enhanced by superb hand colour work of the very highest order that will make for an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the title cartouche crediting Bompar as author of the map- note meticulous depiction of buildings at larger cities. Bridge at Avignon. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Avignon to Arles as seen below measures just 5 cm actual size: Note pictorial depiction of Camargue delta. Tiny buildings at Marseille and Aix:

1603 ORTELIUS Map LUXEMBOURG Jacques Surhon's "Secret" Survey for Charles V FINE
Lutzenburgensis Ducatus Veriss. Descript. 49.5 cm x 37 cm copperplate engraving. 56 x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1579, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the classic map(Van der Krogt 3380:31) of Luxembourg and environs from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Like nearly all 16th and early 17th century maps of the Luxembourg and Trier region, the map is based on the manuscript map made by Jacques Surhon in 1551 as part of a survey ordered by Charles V- the oldest known"modern" mapping of Luxembourg. However, owing to political intrigue Charles V chose not to allow Surhon's map to be published(although Surhon was paid for his work) and it was not known to the public until Ortelius's ... moreinitial publication of this plate in 1579. Beautifully engraved and attributed to the master Frans Hogenberg, the Ortelius version of the Surhon map is rightly considered the gold standard by which all other publishers of the Surhon map are judged. The somewhat odd title cartouche credits Surhon as the"author" of the map- note pictorial forests in the Ardennes: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Luxembourg to Trier as seen in this enlarged photo measures just 9.5 cm actual size: A secondary cartouche for Ortelius' publishing privilege features twin storks- note also how Namur spills into map border: Mileage scale- note elegant calligraphy throughout: Ortelius's Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself- representative excerpts presented below are derived from the 1606 English edition published in London: the people of Luxembourg are for the most part Dutch. Although their country lies close by France and they are accustomed to the language and fashions of the French. is a beautiful town on the top of a hill.some say that the moon was in ancient times worshipped here and that it was called Arlune. Archipelagi Insularum Aliquot Descrip. 47.5 cm x 36 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1584, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt#7910:31B) of Crete and ten Aegean islands from the 1603 Latin Edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. For the map of Crete, Ortelius credits the Venetian ambassador to Spain Francesco Soranzo(Superanti) as aiding in the compilation of the cartography, probably by providing Ortelius with an Italian book containing a map of Crete that was superior to other contemporary sources. In preparing the cartography for the ten island inset maps Ortelius drew upon earlier maps by Italian geographers including. And. The engraving work is of the highest order. And ... morethe overall design reflects sophisticated visual conception as is evident in the alternating stipple and moire patterns for"waves" in the ten smaller maps. One of the most sought-after maps of the Theatrum, this fine example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with Crete- to get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Heraklion(Candia) southeast to Ier apetra(Girapetra) as seen in the photo below measures just 11.5 cm actual size: Kh ania and the west- note bold pictorial topography. Elegant calligraphy: Lasithi and the east are presented with a decorative mileage scale- note how the island of K asos(Caxio) overspills into map border: K arpathos(Scarpanto) and Euboea(Negroponte) Lesbos(Metellino) Kithira(Cerigo) Milos(Milo) and Limnos(Stalimene) Naxos(Nicsia) Thira(Santo Erini) Rhodes, Rodus) and Chios(Scio) Ortelius' Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself. And we provide representative excerpts based on the text from the English translation used in the 1606 London edition of the Theatrum below: We are beholding to that brave nobleman the Honourable Signore F

Sardinia, Corfu(Kerkyra) Elba, Malta and Djerba from the 1603 Latin Edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. One of the most elegantly designed multi-part maps of the Theatrum. Ortelius drew upon the work of a number of Italian geographers including(1500-1566) for the cartography. While contributing elements of his own towering classical scholarship in the compilation of each of the six inset maps. The central map of Sicily depicts the surrounding Sea in a finely stippled dot matrix ... morewhile each of the five surrounding maps present the waters in more"churning" moire patterns in a handsome and clever visual layout. Beautifully engraved. This well-preserved example exhibits sublime hand colour work of the highest order, and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with Malta- oriented to the northeast we find a pictorial depiction of shipwreck of St. Paul including survivors swimming to shore! Ortelius based the cartography on earlier well-known maps of Malta by Antonio Lafreri(1512-1577) and the Chevalier Jean Quintin D'Autun(1500-1561) To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Valetta(Castello" to the coast of Gozo at upper left measures just 12 cm actual size: Elba is presented in fine detail with an elaborate. Minutely detailed pictorial depiction of the fortified town of and notations locating iron mines and mines for magnetic lodestone. Ortelius is believed to have drawn upon an anonymous contemporary Italian map of Elba that was probably also the basis of Tommaso Porcacchi's map of the island that appeared around the same time and is more or less identical. The map is oriented to the east for a unique"sideways" presentation On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. In the richly detailed historic maps of the Parergon. Ortelius was able to employ his vast knowledge of the classical world to create extraordinary cartographic and scholarly depictions of regions of the ancient world as they were understood in the Renaissance, as this finely crafted map amply demonstrates. 1583 Decorative Ortelius Map of Calais, Boulogne, France
1583 Ortelius Map- Caletensium et Bononientsium. Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. This map is from the 1st Galle French edition published in 1583 under the title"Miroir du Monde" This gorgeous little map of the Calais/Boulogne region of northern France shows the incredible detail and decoration of the first Philip Galle edition. This is the world map from this atlas. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum(pronounced[tʰɛˈaːtrʊm ... moreˈɔrbɪs tɛˈrːaːrʊm] Theatre of the World" is considered to be the first true modern atlas. Written by Abraham Ortelius and originally printed on May 20, 1570, in Antwerp,1] it consisted of a collection of uniform map sheets and sustaining text bound to form a book for which copper printing plates were specifically engraved. The Ortelius atlas is sometimes referred to as the summary of sixteenth-century cartography. Many of the maps in this atlas maps were based upon sources that no longer exist or are extremely rare. Ortelius append a unique source list(the"Catalogus Auctorum" identifying the names of contemporary cartographers, some of whom would otherwise have remained obscure. After the initial publication of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Ortelius regularly revised and expanded the atlas, reissuing it in various formats until his death in 1598. From its original seventy maps and eighty-seven bibliographic references in the first edition(1570) the atlas grew through its thirty-one editions to encompass 183 references and 167 maps in 1612. 1602 Important Ortelius Map of Hungary & Transylvania
1602 Ortelius Map- Hungarie Abraham Ortelius. This map is from the 1602 English language edition published by John Norton. Generally regarded as the the first world atlas published in English. This map of Hungary and Transylvania is from that edition. The map is centred around the Danube river with many settlements marked including ... moreOfen(Buda) Pest and Rab. Transylvania, now part of Romania, was then under Hungarian influence. There is an elegant box title and scale of distance in the bottom right. The map measures 3.5" by 4.5" Has wash hand colouring and is in very good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 400 years old. Shipping United States- Regular airmail $5.00US. 1603 Ortelius Map TURKISH (OTTOMAN) EMPIRE - MIDDLE EAST Decorative & Detailed!
Turcici Imperii Descriptio 49.5 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1579, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the Ottoman Empire(Van der Krogt 8100:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Ortelius based his cartography for the map in large part on his own earlier map of Asia. Which in turn drew on a 1561 map of Asia by Gastaldi. The map would certainly give the European reader pause as it showed the"Tyrannical Turkish Yoke" as Ortelius worded it in his commentary) spanning three continents and stretching as far as the outskirts of Vienna. Wonderfully decorative and one of the most sought-after of all Ortelius maps, this well-preserved ... moreexample exhibits fine hand colour work and will make for an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Many of the ornate strapwork cartouches used by Ortelius' engravers were taken from a series of ornament prints published in the 1560s by the brilliant architect. Painter, designer and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. This magnificent decorative cartouche is embellished with winged sphinxes with sea serpent tails, putti, foliage, incense thuribles and the motto from Seneca's"Letters to Lucillo" which translates as"Through harmony small things grow greater, with discord the largest things fall to ruin" A dotted line shows the limits of Ottoman territory within Europe. An ominous demarcation indeed to Ortelius's readers, especially when one considers that the 1683 Battle of Vienna when King John III Sobieski of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth finally defeated the Ottoman forces still lay 80 years in the future when this example of the map was printed. Note elegant and varied calligraphy throughout: A menacing sea monster swims in the Black Sea- note fine horizontal lines for littoral waters providing something of a"3D"
