Rare Original Antique World Map 1599-1609 Hondius,Ortelius,Miniature,Hemisphere
World) Typus Orbis Terrarum. A wonderful black and white miniature map. Engraved on copper by“I.i.e. Jodocus] Hondius, from a Dutch edition of Barent Langenes’ Caert-thresoor… published in Amsterdam by Cornelis Claesz. If your taste in antiquarian maps inclines toward the diminutive you will appreciate this charming example. Shirley, No.211, points out the similarities between this map and the oval format world in Abraham Ortelius’ Epitome Du Theatre du Monde… 1588 and onwards) from which it seems to be derived, but they are by no means identical. For one thing, there are several new names in North and South America(e.g. Tolm reg.num] Norrobega, California, Virginia, and“Patagones” However, the name for the great fictitious north polar continent, Terra Septentrionalis incognita, is missing. The Solomon Islands are“Islas de Salomon” on the ... moreOrtelius map and“Insulae Salomonis” here and“Guinea Nova” is circumscribed on the earlier map and undefined on this one, where it is labeled“Guinea no. The configuration of the gigantic southern continent, Terra Australis nondum cognita” on both maps, is really quite different. Finally, the strapwork designs in the corners make the Langenes map more decorative than the Oretelius. In any event, a delightful little map, reproduced on p.230 of Shirley, Fitch#55 description. Dutch text on verso. 5x3.5. 1599-1609.

1603 ORTELIUS WORLD MAP The Iconic "Typus Orbis Terrarum" Beautiful Example RARE
Typus Orbis Terrarum 49 cm x 35.5 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1587, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original example of the iconic map of the world(Van der Krogt 0001:31C) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This 1603 imprint is the third state of the map; this plate corrected the west coast of South America by removing an inaccurate"bulge" on the Pacific coast and added the wonderfully decorative quotation medallions in the four corners. Ortelius based the cartography in part on Mercator's 1569 world map. But also drew upon many other cartographers both"ancient and modern" as well as the accounts of explorers including those ... morecompiled by. The masterfully engraved map. Especially with Ortelius listing his dozens of sources in the text on verso, is essentially a summation of 16th century cartographic scholarship presented in unsurpassed Renaissance aesthetic elegance. Arguably the quintessential antiquarian map of the world with its impeccable harmony of design, this well-preserved example features superb hand colour work including gilt lettering in the title cartouche- a map that will make a truly stunning presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with North America. Most of which is rather confused cartography from Spanish sources, e.g. Francisco Vásquez de Coronado's mysterious city of located on the California coast rather than inland(if such a place existed modern scholars believe it was somewhere in Kansas) and a"River of the Straits" discharging into the Pacific between Mendocino and the realm of"Anian" I.e. the region of the Bering Strait. 1603 Ortelius Map CALAIS-BOULOGNE COAST + VERMANDOIS Fine Example, Decorative!
Caletensium et Bononiensium Ditionis Accurata Delineatio/ Veromanduorum Eorumque Confinium Exactissima Descript. Iohanne Surhonoio Auctore 46.5 x 34.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 x 43.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, engraved circa 1598, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this two-part regional map of France from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Beautifully engraved with handsome decorative elements, this unusual two part map presents at left a coastal map of the region between Calais and Boulogne, with a map of the Vermandois region at right. Ortelius based the cartography on earlier maps by French cartographers(1517-1583) and Jean Surhon(fl. 1550-1570) respectively. In 1598 this plate replaced the original map that appeared in every ... moreedition of the Theatrum since the first edition in which the Vermandois map was oriented to the south. Also the previous plate had simple block lettering for the notations in the ocean- compare the wonderfully ornate calligraphy presented here. The maps are notable for their elaborate pictorial depiction of cities and fortifications with considerably more minute detail than is typical of Ortelius maps. Adding pictorial topography and tiny"forests" to the mix presents two maps that showcase the engraver's art. Here enhanced with hand colour work of the very highest order that will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed either together or separately. Note pictorial topography and"forests" notation at lower right states that Nicolay's map that was the basis of this map was issued in 1558- Surhon's map also appeared around that time and may have been contributed to by his cartographer father Jacques Surhon who died in 1557. Cities and fortifications are presented in perspective for a"3D" appearance- to get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Calais to Gravelines(Grevelinge) as seen below measures just 8 cm ac

Thraciae Veteris Typus 47 cm x 35.5 cm copperplate engraving. 58 cm x 46 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Antwerp, engraved 1585, printed 1624 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Thrace. The Bosporus and Sea of Marmara from the 1624 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. This example of"historical cartography" was presented in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. And Ortelius based the content of the map on classical sources including Pliny, Ptolemy, Strabo and Plutarch. On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation ... moreof friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. In the richly detailed historic maps of the Parergon. Ortelius was able to employ his vast knowledge of the classical world to create extraordinary cartographic and scholarly depictions of regions of the ancient world as they were understood in the Renaissance, as this finely crafted map amply demonstrates. Note how the Danube flows"through" the ornate title cartouche. Fine gilt illumination of Greek letters: Bosporus: A secondary cartouche presents a list of places near Byzantium mentioned by ancient writers that Ortelius could not locate with certainty. Many of the ornate cartouches used by Ortelius' engravers were taken from a series of ornament prints published in the 1560s by the brilliant architect. Painter, designer and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries: Likewise for"situs incogniti" in Thrace- the extent of Ortelius' scholarship is evident in this exhaustive list of places. R
1587 (1633) ORTELIUS (Jansson) ANCIENT GERMANY Scarce!
Germaniae Vetris Typus 48 cm x 38 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 47 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved and printed 1633 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the finely engraved map of"Ancient Germany" Van der Krogt 2000:H1B) published by Jan Jansson(1588-1664. Also known as Janssonius) from the 1633 German edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The year the map was first published. Jansson's father-in-law(1563-1612) purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as a foundation Hondius added maps of his own. A practice later continued by his sons and their brother-in-law Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Jansson was not ... morea true cartographer and typically published finely engraved maps that were close copies of earlier maps. This map is a case in point as it is a close copy of the classic map of the same title by Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) first published in 1587 in his renowned Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The first true atlas in the modern sense. This example of"historical cartography" was presented in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. And Ortelius based the content of the map mainly on the writings of Julius Caesar, Tacitus, Pliny, Strabo, Ptolemy and other classical authors. On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. Common Description: One of the earliest maps of the East Indies, published in Ortelius's, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first"modern atlas" in which all the maps were issued for the first time in a uniform size and format. Superbly decorated with a pair of frolicking mermaids, galleons, sea monsters, a crest and decorative title within a strap work frame. Much confusion resulted in the mapping of the Indies after the travel accounts of Marco Polo’s, Divisament dou Monde(Description of the World) and specifically his account of his five months stay in northern Sumatra were incorrectly scribed in 129. In these accounts, Marco Polo’s relative positioning of Java Grande and Java minor were to confuse cartographers for the next three centuries. The land of Beach is shown emerging from the lower margin being the northern tip of Australia and above it lies the mythical land of Java Major, which again according to Marco Polo was the largest island in the world. His Java Minor the island of Sumatra is now correctly named. Ortelius map of the Indies improved upon the positioning of the all important Moluccas(the Spice Islands) than those of Gastaldi, Ramusio and Forla

1660 THRACIAE VETERIS TYPUS by ORTELIUS BULGARIA GREECE TURKEY
I have here for sale a rare map of THRACIAE VETERIS TYPUS originally engraved by Ortelius for his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1603- the map covers modern day Turkey and Greece across to Bulgaria and includes the Dardanelles. The Bosphorus and Byzantium or Istanbul. 58cm by 52cm. Large wide margins to all sides. Damp stain in bottom margin not affecting the image. Crease has not torn at all as it has been reinforced with professional restorers tape. I have a number of maps for sale- if you are interested in any of them please let me know. Or they will go up on Ebay and you will be in competition at auction. Its Christmas soon and you should buy a lovely map or print- why. You ask. Well I reckon there are three reasons: Firstly, you have been good all year and deserve a treat; Secondly, you have a friend who will need to have Christmas gift ... moreof some sort and the last thing you want to do is to trek around a bleak shopping centre on Christmas Eve, and a map or print shouts out'I like you and have bought you a unique gift of some intrinsic value' and thirdly, its an investment and will be worth more in ten years than it costs you today. HJB-Antique Maps: Western Hemisphere By: Abraham Ortelius Date: 1598 (p) Antwerp
Americae sive Novi Orbis. Nova Descriptio High Resolution Image By: Abraham Ortelius. Date: 1598(published) Antwerp. Dimensions: 19.2 x 14 inches(48.8 x 35.5 cm) A bold and elegant. Third state example of Ortelius’s map of the Americas. Originally published in 1570, the first plate of this map was based off of Gerard Mercator’s multi-sheet map of the world from 1569. Engraved by Frans Hogenberg, this became one of the most famous influential maps of the New World and the basis for a great deal of future cartography of the Americas. This particular specimen was published in Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1598 as evident by the French text on the verso and numerous alterations and additions found throughout the image. The two most notable changes from the previous states are the addition of the Salomon Islands for the first time since their discovery ... morein 1568 and the removal of a southwestern bulge in South America. Other additions include numerous sailing ships. The placement of C. Mendocino, Wingandekoa(the native location of an unsuccessful English colony) and decorative cartouche to North America. Also worth noting of North America is the near convergence of the St. Lawrence and the fictional Tiguas river in the center of the continent. The Great Lakes will not make their appearance until the 1670s with the works of the French cartographer Nicolas Sanson. In the southwestern Pacific. New Guinea is shown to be completely connected to Terra Australis and ultimately Magellanica and Tierra del Fuego. A well placed, lovely rococo style title cartouche saves Ortelius from any further mapping of this misprojected and erroneous coastline. Condition: Map is in A condition with rich. Old coloring and minor professional repairs in blank margins. Inventory#18431. 31 N. Clark Street. Chicago, IL 60602 | T: 312) 609- 0016

1603 (1570) ORTELIUS ASIA CONTINENT MAP Japan Marco Polo Geography FINE EXAMPLE!
Asiae Nova Descriptio 49 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1574, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original continental map of Asia(Van der Krogt 8000:31B) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Ortelius based his cartography for the map in large part on his own earlier wall map of Asia from 1567. Which in turn drew on an earlier map of Asia compiled by. Interestingly. Gastaldi drew upon the 14th century writings of the Arab scholar and geographer(aka) for much of his data regarding the Islamic areas of the map. Taken as a whole. The map is a fascinating combination of known and speculative cartography(note complete absence of Korean peninsula) that ... moreis significantly less coherent in the north than in the reasonably accurate south. Ortelius explains in his commentary on the map that he divided the continent into five parts"according to the great Empires by which it is governed" the first bordering Europe subject to the"Duke of Russia" the second"yielding to the great Khan of the Tartars" the third"the progeny of the Ottomans or Turkish Emperour" the fourth the Kingdom of Persia and the fifth China and the Indies, the latter of which he notes are governed by"many petty Kings. Featuring fine decorative elements, elegant calligraphy and intriguing notations the map provides unique insight into European knowledge(or more accurately the lack thereof) of the"mysterious east" at the time of the late Renaissance. One of the most sought-after of all Ortelius maps this imprint from the 1603 Vrients edition is exceptionally well-preserved, exhibits superb hand colour work and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome title cartouche- note beautifully illuminated gilt lettering: Japan is presented in semi-coherent fash

One of the most famous and influential maps published in the Theatrum. Ortelius drew upon earlier maps by Mercator as well as accounts of Marco Polo and. A survivor of Magellan's circumnavigation. The map provides a fascinating snapshot of a part of the world just starting to be understood in the great age of exploration, and the flamboyant decorative elements understandably make it one of the most celebrated and sought ... moreafter of all Ortelius maps. T his example. A strong imprint from the 1603 Vrients edition, is exceptionally well-preserved, exhibits superb hand colour work and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the strapwork title cartouche flanked by a handsome galleon and announcing the region as the"East Indies and surrounding islands" note"Cincapura" at location of Singapore. Notation estimating between 7000 and 8000 islands in the Maldives: Japan is presented in the largely incoherent"Kite" form introduced by Mercator and with ridiculous proximity to America and the mythical city of; Ortelius never got around to revising the plate(which was engraved in 1570) to incorporate the advances of a manuscript map of Japan that he received in late 1592 from the Portugese Jesuit Luis Teixeira which did incorporate into his'Japoniae Insulae Descriptio" map. Thus Kyushu which is shown as a separate island on the later map is shown as attached to Honshu. On the mainland Hangzhou is shown as Marco Polo's"Quinsai" and Ortelius notes that Marco Polo also called Japan"Zipangri" Note el
