Description: This map originates from: 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Abraham Ortelius' after an anonymous artist. Abraham ... moreOrtelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg.

1604 Scarce Ortelius Map of French Alps
1602 Ortelius Map- Delphinatus Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. This map is from the scarce Hulsius 1604 German edition This map of the French Alpine region of Dauphine has attractive engraving and good detail. It is centred around the city of Grenoble and includes most of the great French ski areas including Chamberi and Moustiere. Lyon lies ... moreto the north and Orange at the southern end of the Rhone river. The map has a title cartouche. The map measures 4.5" by 3.5" Has later wash hand colouring, and is in fairly good condition with a small repair to the bottom border. The map is guaranteed to be over 400 years old. HJB-AntiqueMaps: Map of Japan and Korea By: Abraham Ortelius Date: 1603
Japoniae Insulae Descriptio Ludoico Teisera Auctore High Resolution Image By: Abraham Ortelius. Date: 1603(published) Antwerp. Dimensions: 19 x 14 inches(48.25 x 35.5 cm) This is a marvelous example of Ortelius's paramount map of Japan and Korea. The map was the first large scale example of the Islands of Japan to be published in a European atlas(Theatrum Orbis Terrarum) This particular specimen is out of the first state to feature Latin text on the verso published in 1603. Much of the information used by Ortelius was derived from a Portuguese cartographer and mathematician Ludovico Teixeira. While Teixeira had never been to Japan his sources must have been reputable since numerous place names are labeled throughout and the map displays an impressive amount of geographic accuracy for its time. Korea however is depicted as an island with ... moreonly two towns and a southern point labeled Punta dos Ladrones. Three sailing ships decorative cartouches and lovely original color bring out the aesthetic elements of this landmark map which became the basis for nearly all maps of Japan for over 50 years. HJB-AntiqueMaps: Map of Asia By: Abraham Ortelius Date: 1574 (Amsterdam)
Asiae Nova Descriptio High Resolution Image By: Abraham Ortelius. Date: 1574(published) Antwerp Dimensions: 19 x 14.5 inches(48.25 x 36.83 cm) This is an alluring hand colored example of Ortelius's map of Asia from his first modern world atlas" Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" published only in Latin. Much of the continent is dominated by Tartaria. India is presented as a rather unusual shape. Japan is severely misprojected and New Guinea is shown to be of enormous size with the possibility of being connected to Australia. The map is richly embellished with cities towns mountains rivers and lakes as it extends as far west as Asia Minor and northeastern Africa. Sailing ships in the Pacific add decorative elements to the work. On the verso. A Latin text description of Asia. 1583 Ortelius maps of Bavaria, from Phillip Galle's "Miroir du Monde"
Offered here are genuine antique maps of the Dukedom of Bavaria. And the Bavaria Palatinate. Between 1577 and 1598 Galle issued eleven editions of a miniature atlas after the larger Ortelius originals. These two maps of Bavaria come from"Le Miroir du monde réduit premirement en rithme brabanonne par M. P. Heyns et maintenant tourné en prose franoise. Anvers. C. Plantin for P. Galle, 1583. The larger atlases were only affordable to the wealthy. The miniature atlases of this era proved very popular among the educated classes who were not rich. They remained relatively a luxury item. I'm going to list a number of maps. All genuine antiques. Best wishes and good luck!

1603 Ortelius (Sorte) Map BRESCIA ITALY LAGO DI GARDA & D'ISEO Very Fine Example
Brixiani Agri Typus 46.5 cm x 33 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1590, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt 7140:31) of the Brescia region of Italy from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Ortelius based the cartography on a map of the region compiled by the Italian artist, civil engineer and geographer(1510-1595) and followed Sorte's original"sideways" eastern orientation. Thus Cremona. To the south of Brescia, appears to its right and Mantua(Mantova) appears to the right(south) of Lago di Garda. Beautifully engraved with bold pictorial topography and flamboyant decorative elements, this strong imprint from the 1603 Vrients ... moreedition is exceptionally well-preserved. This example of the map also exhibits superb hand colour work including masterful gilt illumination of the lettering in the flamboyant title cartouche and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The impressive title cartouche features an ornamental sundial- note beautifully illuminated gilt lettering. The citation"Brixia Cygnea supposita in specula" is a slightly corrupted quotation from the 67th Epigram of Catullus which translates roughly to"Brescia placed under the watch of Cycnus" Apparently a reference to a Bronze Age Ligurian prince of that name(supposedly transformed into a swan. Hence the name) this is a reference to the Colle Cidneo hill overlooking the city. That Ortelius cited this quotation as a subtitle for the map is rather curious- the passage from Catullus has been convincingly demonstrated to be a decidedly lurid ekphrasis where Brescia represents the promiscuous matrona who is the subject of the satirical poem. Read in its original context(available in a modern translation) it is indeed a rather surprising reference for Ortelius to have selected to say the least. To get a sense of

Ortelius based the cartography on a map of Flanders compiled in 1540 by the illustrious adding supplemental data of his own and including an inset map of Zeeland at upper left in an ornate strapwork"frame" depicting the region"as it appeared in the time of. Count of Flanders" 1251-1305) Extending from north of Antwerp to as far south as Douai the map is a classic ... moreOrtelius compilation and this imprint from the 1603 Vrients edition is exceptionally well-preserved. This example of the map also exhibits superb hand colour work including masterful gilt illumination of the lettering in the flamboyant title cartouche and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome strapwork title cartouche featuring the"lion rampant sable. Armed and langued gules" of the Arms of Flanders- note splendid gilt lettering. Ortelius credits Mercator as his principal source while noting his own supplemental contributions. Note lavish"flourishes" of nearby calligraphy: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Antwerp to Gent as seen below measures just 12 cm actual size: Birds perch on the handsomely engraved mileage scale- note pictorial representation of"Den nieuwen dyck" just above: The inclusion of the inset map referencing the"time of Guy of Dampierre" was almost certainly something of a political statement- while the took place nearly 300 years before Ortelius compiled the map sensitivities regarding French vs. Flemish issues in Ortelius&#
1603 Ortelius Two Part Map PADUA & TREVISO Both Radiate from VENICE Fine Example
Patavini Territorii Corographia. Tarvisini Agri Typus TWO 31 cm x 24 cm copperplate engravings together on one 56 cm x 44 cm sheet. Modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1595, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original two part map of the"Territory of Padua" Van der Krogt 7120:31B) and the"Fields of Treviso" Van der Krogt 7160:31B) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Ortelius based the cartography for the"Patavini" map on an earlier map of the region compiled by the Italian cartographer(1500-1566) While the"Treviso" plate is derived from a manuscript map by the artist and engraver Giovanni Pinadello(1560-1632) Both maps feature fine pictorial depictions of Venice but the ... morethe"Patavini" map features a"sideways" orientation to the west so Padua(Padova) appears above Venice while the"Treviso" map features the typical northern orientation so that Treviso to the north of Venice appears above it as is the custom on modern maps. Thus the two maps together present a joint survey of adjacent parts of the Veneto. Strong imprints from the 1603 Vrients edition this example is exceptionally well-preserved. Exhibits superb hand colour work of the highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The. Symbol of the city of Venice is presented in a handsome escutcheon- note pictorial topography and marshes. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Padua to Vicenza(WNW but here up and slightly to the right) measures just 11 cm actual size: A handsome strapwork cartouche incorporates the mileage scale- note elegant calligraphy for Adriatic. Detailed depiction of Venice with Murano to the northeast here shown to the lower right of Venice: Title cartouche credits Pinadello as"author" of the map. But it may be that he copied it from another source. He is probably best known for a rat

This map is from'Theatro del Mondo' the first Galle Italian edition published in 1592. This lovely map of Bohemia. Modern day Czech Republic, is from that 1592 edition and the superb engraving is immediately evident. The area shown is largely circular contained by mountain ... moreranges with the city of Prague in the north centre. The Danube river flows in the south west corner.
