1602 Ortelius Map- Delphinatus Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. 1593 Ortelius Map- Cremonensis Ager. Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. The impressive title cartouche features an ornamental sundial- note beautifully illuminated gilt lettering. The citation"Brixia Cygnea supposita in specula" is a slightly corrupted quotation from the 67th Epigram of Catullus which translates roughly to"Brescia placed under the watch of Cycnus" Apparently a reference to a Bronze Age Ligurian prince of that name(supposedly transformed into a swan. Hence the name) this is a reference to the Colle Cidneo hill overlooking the city. That Ortelius cited this quotation as a subtitle for the map is rather curious- the passage from Catullus has been convincingly demonstrated to be a decidedly lurid ekphrasis where Brescia represents the promiscuous matrona who is the subject of the satirical poem. I am by no means a map expert, so please examine the attributes as seen in the images and ascertain the edition to the best of your knowledge. 1590 Fine Ortelius Map of Spain & Portugal
1590 Ortelius Map- Hispania Abraham Ortelius. Along with his contemporary Gerard Mercator, was the greatest name in early mapmaking. While Mercator was the first person to use the term'Atlas' to describe a collection of uniformly sized maps, Ortelius was the first to actually publish one. This was his'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' of 1570 and it was so successful that smaller versions were immediately called for. Philip Galle was the first to produce an'epitome' or miniature version, in 1577 but others followed including the Arsenius brothers. This map is from the 2nd Galle French edition published in 1590. This lovely map of the Iberian Peninsula is from that 1590 edition and the superb engraving is immediately evident. The area shown includes all of Spain& Portugal and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean. The ... moremap has a nice box title in the lower right.
