1781 Vaugondy Map of Colonial North America
1781 Vaugondy Map- Amerique Septentrionale The Vaugondy family produced a large number of atlases from about 1740 to the end of the century. Apart from the large'Atlas Universelle' and the small'Atlas Militaire' They allowed their maps to be'licensed' by other publishers, none more obviously so than in the many editions of'Methode abregee et facile pour apprendre la Geographie' dedicated to Mme Crozat. These went through many editions from about 1751 until well into the 1800's. The editions in the 1700s all used Vaugondy maps, often dated 1750, but issued into the 1780's. Later 18th century editions had new maps engraved but faithfully following Vaugondy's outdated geography of up to half a century earlier. This map of colonial North America was issued in a 1781 edition of Crozat and shows nearly ... morethe whole continent but wisely leaves out the north west which was soon to become an area of cartographic speculation in the late 1700's. Nlle Angleterre(New England) refers to all the English colonies down the eastern seaboard including Georgia. While much of the central area is called'Floride' and'Louisiane' Canada stretches well south of its current border. The map measures 6" by 6" with two folds(as issued) Has outline hand colouring, and is in good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 220 years old. Map is from a 1910 edition of Harmsworth Atlas which was printed in Great Britain which is near impossible to obtain for reasonable costs in the United States. This map is genuine. Here for sale is a vintage map published by W& A K Johnston in 1914 as part of the Popular America Edition Series. It came with several similar maps from the"Unrivaled Series" of 1914 published by Johnston. I obtained this map and 6 other maps from a collection of maps used in a one room school in Welch. Minnesota. The maps had a slight odor of age which has improved substantially since I took them out of their holder. The map measures about 38 by 48 inches. And has rollers on each end. The bottom roller has become removed from the map and should be reattached. The map has condition issues as shown in the photo. Including tearing and scraping, mostly along the bottom, and along the extreme edges. There are some small tears in the map too. Map has some staining or darkening, again mostly along the bottom, and could use a cleaning. ... morePlease see the photos to observe condition. 1784 Bayly Map- North America John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. This map comes from the Geographical Magazine. It has very clear. Simple engraving and the oval title ignores the customary vignette, common to so many maps of the time. Like his contemporary, John Cary, Bayly brings cartography into the more recognizable, modern approach. The west coast awaits the discoveries of Cook and Vancouver.
