Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his successors and son were one of the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol, Connecticut on March 20, 1792. Mitchell's first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finley's New American Atlas in 1831, a work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to H. S. Tanner's extensive work of the same title. Mitchell's edition of the New American Atlas maps were significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Beginning in 1839, The Mitchell family also began publication of his school atlas. 1937 Denoyer Geppert Big Wall Map Junior Political Series North America Map J5
Here is a very cool Denoyer Geppert Pull down school map of North America from 1937 for sale. This is a big map that measures 43" across and 60" tall. This map is in good antique condition. Please see all pictures as there are areas of wear from age and use. But overall I could almost call it great condition for how old it is and considering the amount of use it has had over the years. There is seperation from the bottom pole on the right side about a third of the way across the bottom. Really what a person should do though is get rid of the poles and have this framed anyway. It has been taped to the top pole and I did not remove the tape. This is map J5 in the series. This is a really cool find that will look awesome on your wall. British North America referred to the colonies and territories of the British Empire in continental North America. The term was first used informally in 1783. But it was uncommon before the Report on the Affairs of British North America(1839) Called the Durham Report. In 1775 the British Empire included 20 territories north of New Spain. These were Newfoundland, Rupert's Land, Nova ... moreScotia, Prince Edward Island. The Thirteen Colonies(which later united to become the United States after independence from the United Kingdom) East and West Florida. And the Province of Quebec. Britain had acquired Quebec from France and East and West Florida from Spain by the Treaty of Paris(1763) Which ended the Seven Years' War. Made approximately 140 years ago. Printed in the mid-19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. A beautifully engraved map of this region. Magnificent& beautifully hand coloured uncommon original antique map of North America- with California as an Island after the Sanson model- was engraved by Robert Cordier in 1698(169- ... moredated in the scale cartouche- and is the second state of seven published by Alexis Hubert Jaillot in his folio Atlas François. This map is not to be confused with Jaillots earlier and larger scale map with the same name. This one is more uncommon with only 18 recorded sales between 1983-2010 for all seven states. This is a beautiful map published at the height of French cartography in the 17th century. A must for all collectors of North American cartography. Second state of this handsome map showing the island of California with an indented northern coast and the Terre de Iesso Ieco(Japan) just a short distance off its north-western coast. All five Great Lakes are now shown. With Superior and Michigan open-ended. The Rio del Norte flows incorrectly into the Gulf of California. The lion's share of today's United States is divided between Floride and Nouveau Mexique. The region of present-day South Carolina and Georgia is noted as Floride Francois.
