You are looking at a map from Walker’s International Atlas. The maps themselves were the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Worldcat.org does not list any 1892 editions. Each map measures 17 1/2 X 25 inches. The maps in this listing are in good overall condition. With minor showing of handling. Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his successors and son were one of the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol, Connecticut on March 20, 1792. Mitchell's first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finley's New American Atlas in 1831, a work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to H. S. Tanner's extensive work of the same title. Mitchell's edition of the New American Atlas maps were significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Beginning in 1839, The Mitchell family also began publication of his school atlas. We note the depiction of a mythical Buenaventura river which extends from near Salt Lake in the desert across to the Pacific ocean. In good+. Mostly clean condition. Map gently toned, with some light spotting and foxing throughout, some tiny small ink lines scattered at left side- not visually offensive and still a nice map to view. Otherwise map remains clean and well-preserved overall. Sheet measures c. 12" W x 9 1/4" H. It is from the 1890 edition of Stieler's Hand Atlas. Published in Gotha by Justus Perthes. The map is by the great German cartographer Augustus Petermann(1822-1878) Best know for Petermann’s geographische Mitteilungen. The leading geographical journal of the day supplying the world with maps and information on newly explored regions around the world including the Arctic and Africa. His maps were certainly among the most accurate and detailed of the period and led the way to a new school of cartography often referred to as the"Gotha School. ... moreHis maps continued to be used and revised for years after his death in 1878 and his Mitteilungen continued until 2004. After 1865. Mexico and the Caribbean by George Frederic Lotter. The map features inserts of Baffin and Hudson's Bay, the northern Gulf of California, a seven scales of distance table, and a decorative cartouche depicting British merchants at a port with a ship in the background being loaded with cargo by slaves. Throughout this map is an immense amount of geographical and historical information including locations of indian tribes, expedition routes and discoveries, beaver hunting lands, forts and the dates they were established, tracts of land labeled as unknown, and false islands in Lake superior as well as a few geographical features once thought to exist deemed imaginary. Description: This is a fascinating map of British North America or Canada from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It covers from the North Georgian Islands to the United States including Greenland. Iceland and Russian Territories of what is now Alaska. Upper Canada(Ontario) Lower Canada(Quebec) Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland are depicted in detail. The boundary settled in 1825 between Canada and the Russian Territories is noted here. It also shows all the Great Lakes Ontario, Erie, Superior, Michigan and Huron. The map offers copious notations throughout, such as'The Indians descend it in three days' and'Point reached by the Blossom's ... moreboat' Also notes numerous American Indian nations including the Knisteneaux(Cree) Blood, Fall, Blackfoot, Hare, Copper, etc. This map is particularly interesting as it is one of the earliest maps to accurately depict the Northwest Passage, predating the Robert McClure expedition by more than 15 years. Hall correctly maps what are today called the Northwestern Passages between Baffin Bay and the Arctic Ocean. His mapping extends as far west as Melville Island and Banks Island, though does not include Prince Patrick Island. Even so, beyond Melville and Banks Islands, there is little but ice and seasonally open sea as far as Alaska and the Bearing Straits. Also of interest is Hall's concession of British Columbia to the United States as far north as 54 40' a highly unusual move for a British cartographer. In the first half of the 19th century the Pacific Northwest was the last frontier in the century's long slaughter of the American beaver in the name of European fashion. Edward Stanford(1827-1904) was a publisher. Engraver who worked out of premises at 6 C ha ring Cross in London's West End. He took over the Society for Diffusion of useful Knowledge and issued the"Family At las" from 1857 until 1875. The map shows most of North and South America. Condition: Excellent. Engraved on heavy paper, original outline coloring, no folds. Dim ensions: 260 x 280mm;10.0 x 11.0 inches. There are very wide margins all round. The map is guaranteed to be about 150 years old. Published in Rome illustrates the imagined new world of early explorers. California is shown as an island. The open ended Great Lakes are imaginatively drawn much further west than they actually lie. The mythical Quivera is shown in modern day Texas. A nonexistant lake feeds the Rio Norte and the Northwest is entirely absent. Indian tribal territories are noted on this hand colored.
