Map of North America. With ten small inset plans of ports and harbours. Insular California. Moll's famous"codfish map" so-called for its large and informative cartouche of the cod industry. Dried codfish was the staple diet of the Royal Navy, and the fish itself was popular all over Europe. The British also had the largest fishing boat fleet off the Grand Banks. Moll was a German émigré who settled and lived in London. As a newly patriotic and loyal Englishman, Moll wished to depict codfish as being one of the great commercial success stories of the British colonization of North America. The Mississippi Valley, Caribbean, and Mexico. It was made to illustrate the gold routes of the Spanish during their plunder of the Inca and Aztec Empires. The large vignette in the Atlantic portion of the map depicts a large gold mine operation with the natives filling a chest for the Europeans with the riches of their land. Inn the bottom left of the map is a fierce battle scene between many ships. The political divisions of North America are well defined for the period as they reflect the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and French expansion into Louisiana the following 10 years. Beneath the cartouche: se trouve a Amsterdam chez L. Renard Libraire prez de la Bourse. Original outline color. Dimensions: 19 3/4" x 26 5/8" overall. Some browning to the very edges, light creasing in lower corners; the engraved surface is excellent. A fine copy, with a scarce imprint. a la[Courone] de Diamans' dates this to c.1707-8, when de l'Isle occupied this address. It is rare to find this imprint married with'se trouve a Amsterdam chez L. Renard Libraire prez de la Bourse. In Tooley's analysis of the states of this map, he identifies state 2 as the'a la Courone de Diamans' imprint, but says ... morethat he could not personally locate a copy, and state 3 as'le Quai de l'Horloge' combined with'se trouve a Amsterdam chez L. Renard Libraire prez de la Bourse. This example conflates his states 2& 3. This historically important map made three significant contributions to the cartography of North America. It was the first map to revert back to the peninsular form for California, even before the publication of Kino's report. On close inspection one can see a small gap at the head of the Gulf of California, leaving open the possibility that California might still be an island. de L'Isle's second contribution to North American cartography was a more accurate rendition of the Great Lakes region. Third, de L'Isle corrected the position of the lower Mississippi River, moving the mouth of the river from an area near Galveston Bay to a more correct location in Louisiana. That third contribution was first made on the second state of the map.
