1924 Hudson Towers Gold Debenture, Stock Certificate, New York, Sanitarium
Antique 1924 Hudson Towers Gold Debenture. 13" by 10" Issued to Dr. Alfred Braun. History-A harrowing example of this kind is furnished by the“Hudson Towers” at 72d Street and West End Avenue in New York City. This 27-story building was erected as a hotel. Sanitarium, and hospital, catering to patients and their families. It was thus a specialized type of structure. The land actually cost $395.000, and engineers estimated that the building would cost $1.300,000 to construct. In order to facili- tate the sale of $1.650,000 of first-mortgage bonds, the land and building com- bined were“appraised” at $2.600,000, thus making the bonds“legal for trust funds” under the New York law. This occurred in 1923. Subsequently the building passed through various hands by sale and resale. Prior to its completion, and in 1927 sec- ond-mortgage bonds ... moreamounting to $1.150,000 were sold to the public. The project was never completed; and in August 1932 the property was sold for $200.000 on foreclosure of the first mortgage. The outcome from the stand- point of the nonassenting first-mortgage bondholder is indicated by the announcement of the Irving Trust Co. in June 1933 that it was prepared to pay $8.14 on account of each $1.000 principal amount of undeposited first-mortgage bonds. Thus. Less than 1 cent on the dollar was realized on liquidation. Deposit- ing bondholders received only $3.84 per $1.000 bond, after deduction of protec- tive committee expenses. Etc. A most fascinating piece of history as this refers not only to the merchants exchange but also to the Tontine building scheme which left many investors with nothing. Tontine" was a legal device where survivors split inheritance at some period in time. 203 merchants invested $200 per share and owned this building. If those people died before the determined period they and their families got nothing. This scheme is often referenced in history as having been a game of russian roulette since when and only when they got down to 7 survivors did the money get split up. The Tontine building was located at the corners of wall street and water streets in NYC. The Tontine building also housed the merchants exchange until 1827 when that became ... morea separate building. Attractive glossy olive to tan wooden brown color with no distractions. A couple very faint die cracks, only one is noticeable in the photo(from s in Merchants to top of building roof(that is not a scratch) the other runs from the top left corner of the building out to the rim. Jones as Register of the Treasury and Walter O. Woods as Treasurer of The United States. The cashier of this bank is R.M. Gaffney and the President of the bank is C.B. Lord. This bank chartered in January of 1864 as“The First National Bank of Binghamton. New York” The bank issued 237.855 small size Nationals, from 1929 thru July of 1935 when the note issuing period ended. There were four National Banks that issued currency in Binghamton, New York. Only two of these banks survived long enough to issue Series 1929 small size notes. This Bank was the more common of those two banks. The note has four decent margins. But it is cut close at the lower left ... morecorner. This note has seen circulation. And is lightly soiled on both sides, but still retains some brightness and is vivid for the grade. I do not see any rips. Tears, but I do see two tiny pinholes near the center of the note. I grade this note as a Fine+. But you look at the scans and judge for yourself. The Kelly Census shows 61 small size notes reported on the bank. 12 of which are $5.00 Type-1’s, 14 are $10.00 Type-1’s. 15 of which are $5.00 Type– 2’s and the other 20 notes are $10.00 Type-2’s. This note would make a fine addition to any New York State banknote collection. The bank was located in Broome County. Of which only 7 towns issued National Currency. In those 7 towns only 11 National Banks issued currency. This note should appeal to those collecting Broome County and its surrounding areas. This is a‘37 York cornet. Serial# 119390, in almost 100% polished raw brass finish. There is some lacquer remaining in a spot or two that could be removed if desired but it looks pretty good“as is” as you can see from the photos. The horn is in great condition with no dents and only a couple of small dings at the back of the bell crook and tuning slide- hardly noticeable. This horn is fun to play with a mellow vintage cornet tone when played at moderate volume but can generate a“brassy” sound if pushed. Might make a nice jazz horn for someone. The original case comes with the horn and is in very good condition considering its age. There’s also a cleaning rod. Lyre, and Bach 10 1/2C mouthpiece.
