It is from an 1914 edition of Rand McNally's New Ideal Atlas(New York: Harper. 1914) a copy of the title page is included for authenticity. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic. There is also a map on the reverse. Overall, a very nice map that would frame up well. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 9 1/4 by 12 3/4 inches(24x33cm) on a page measuring 11 by 14" 28x36cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition with very light tonal aging. Very clean. It is basically as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. This listing is for an Original Copy of the Famous 1972 New York Subway Guide. Designed by Massimo Vignelli. Introduced to the public on August 7th. 1972, this map caused the most confusion of any in modern history. Many of the map were discarded, thrown away or destroyed in protest. The map design was ultimately replaced in 1979. This is an extremely rare example of one of the most infamous maps in American History. If you'd like more of the story. Many stations seemed to be in the wrong places. The water surrounding the ... morecity was colored beige, not blue. As for Central Park, it appeared to be almost square, rather than an elongated rectangle, three times bigger than the map suggested, and was depicted in a dreary shade of gray. The map was. Indeed, riddled with anomalies, but that was the point. Its designer, Massimo Vignelli, had sacrificed geographical accuracy for clarity by reinterpreting New York’s tangled labyrinth of subway lines as a neat diagram. Each station was shown as a dot and linked to its neighbors by color-coded routes running at 45- or 90-degree angles. Mr. Vignelli had used his design skills to tidy up reality. Design buffs have always loved his map for its rigor and ingenuity. When the future graphic designer Michael Bierut made his first trip to New York in 1976. He took one home to Ohio as a souvenir. But many New Yorkers were outraged by what they saw as the misrepresentation of their city, while tourists struggled to relate Mr. Vignelli’s design to what they found above ground. Note that the photos do not do the map justice. This is truly an incredible map to behold! This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Details: An early and rare state of Colton's map of New York City. The reason being that Central Park is now shown compared to the first state of the map but the paths and roads are not shown in the park yet like they are in the latter Colton editions of this map. The map has a fold as issued and is basically in perfect condition. The light pinkish ... moreline down the middle of the fold line is due to my camera flash and is NOT in the map at all. Like I said it is basically perfect in my opinion. These are just too hard to find in this condition. The copyright date is printed in the lower margin. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. This beautiful 114 year old map of New York City comes from a Rand McNally& Company world atlas. Published in 1900 for the Philadelphia Public Ledger. The map is from page 17 and has a map of Brooklyn on the back. The map is exquisitely printed. Easy to frame and would look great on the wall of your office or study. Page size: 11-1/4 x 14 inches Approximate map size: 9-1/2 x 12-1/4 inches Condition: The map image is in very good condition. There are some chips missing from the margin area and a 1 inch tear which just touches the black border around the map. See scan for details. Fantastic vintage 1974 New York City Subway map designed by Massimo Vignelli very good condition with a small tear(shown on last picture) size 18" x 22" The design of the map was controversial and customers complained about Vignelli’s“geographic inaccuracies” Central Park. For example, was a square rather than its actual rectangular shape– and others found it aesthetically confusing to make the water around New York beige rather than blue. The MTA replaced the Vignelli map with Mike Hertz’s geographic approach in 1979. Design fans. However, celebrated the map and made it a coveted souvenir of trips to New York. It later became part of the postwar design collection at the Museum of Modern Art.
