This offering features an original antique one-page. Highly detailed, multi-color map of the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, with a 2-page high-quality map of the STATE OF TEXAS on the back. In addition, there is an additional single-page map of Kentucky& Tennessee on the back. The maps were rescued from Gaskell's Popular Atlas of the World, published in 1888, and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the maps and the publishing date. The maps were specially engraved for inclusion in this Gaskell atlas and are contemporary with the publishing date. The New Orleans map has a special feature that locates all of the prominent buildings and major hotels of the era. In addition. Railroads, ferries, bayous, and all of the city streets of the era are shown. Suburban towns, such as Gretna and Algiers are also ... moreshown. The 2-page Texas map is highly detailed as well. And it has very nice coloring. Border towns of the period are shown as well as Padre Island. The New Orleans and KY/TN maps are on the back of the 2-page Texas map. Both single-page maps have a page size of 10-3/4" wide x 13-1/2" long. With image sizes of 9-1/4" x 11-1/4" The Texas map has an page size of 13-1/2" wide x 21-3/8" long and an image size of 11-1/2" x 16-3/4" The map conditions are excellent, with no holes or tears in the image nor the margin, no edge loss, and no noticeable yellowing of the paper with age. There is light soiling in the margin. The map colors are exceptionally varied, and are crisp and clear. This map will be carefully wrapped and shipped in a rigid container. Description: An exceptionally scarce 1863 Charles Magnus Civil War era broadside map of the Mississippi River valley from St. Louis to the Delta of the Mississippi. This map. Or as it is called'panorama' is presented in strip format divided into four distinct sections. each section is decorated with an engraved vignette view of the region's most prominent Mississippi port, from left these include New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis, and St. Louis. Though published at the height of the American Civil War the detail present throughout this map could only have been achieved through a personal reconnaissance of the river. Not only ... moredoes the unknown author identify important cities and towns, which would have been common knowledge, but also lesser known country markets, trading posts, farms, saw mills and plantations. Moreover, many of the minor place names were doubtless derived from interviews with local authorities, some of these include'Poverty Landing' Hard Times Landing, Dead Man’s Bay, and'Devil's Tea Table. Such a reconnaissance would have been impossible, or at least highly unlikely, during the years of the Civil War, so most probably the research behind this map took place in years just prior, 1859 or 1860. The choice of Charles Magnus, a New York based map and print publisher well connected with the United States military, further suggests that the cartographer was mostly likely a Union Man. Magnus is also probably behind the map's title, which includes'And its Fortificaions' in bold print, wording clearly intended to appeal to those interested in the Mississippi theater of war. Up for sale is a nice colored map of New Orleans mapped. Edited, and published by the Geological Survey. A colored map, this is a very large one page map measuring approximately 35 by 52 inches. The map is a polyconic projection showing road classifications in New Orleans& vicinity. Published circa 1951. These maps are very scarce and show the area in fantastic detail. A rare piece that will look great when framed. Overall map is in good condition. It has been stored rolled and will ship that way. There is some light browning around the edges. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So some of the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders and foldlines of the maps may also have tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time.
