There are a few minor smudges around the margin and some oxidation of the orange pigment along Arkansas border as seen and some browning on reverse not affecting the map side, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. So this genuine dated 1892 map was in the 1895 edition. The map measures 14 X 20 inches. Map shows all transportation lines. Both steam and street railroads, their routes, stations along with other major points of interest as it was in 1892. Condition: Paper is in excellent condition. Minor handling. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical ... morepublishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. Vances name is removed from the Mitchell edition. The area is within: SW: Grand Lake and Lake Charles.NW: Sugartown and Walnut Hill; NE: Pascagoula River and Fordsville, and SE: Mississippi Sound and West Bay. THE OFFICIAL ATLAS. As it is called, represents the culmination of decades of research after The War, and was contributed to by the military leaders of The War, civil engineers and cartographers, and was intended to be THE companion to The OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE CIVIL WAR. The complete ATLASES were not available to the public. Rather they were sent in a series ... moreof five sheets at a time, 178 sheets in total, to the three branches of government and to federal and state agencies and libraries. When THE OFFICIAL ATLAS was printed. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel ... moreStiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. This is an Antique 1934 Greater New Orleans Large Map& Guide by Cartographer WM. E. Boesch. 22 inches x 34 inches. This is an original map made in New Orleans. Map is in overall good condition with very minor edge wear. One area is shown with a close up. Made on reasonably good quality paper for being a folding map. Guide cover has some moderate wear. Vieux Carre map shown in the last two pictures is inside the guide along with points of interest and street index for New Orleans.
