The Map is quite large measuring 48 inches x 35 inches and is in excellent condition. This large map chart shows Lake Michigan. Lake Huron, the Green Bay Harbor, the Detroit Harbor, Wasington Island, Jackson Island and other areas as well. In 1795 King George III created the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. Known in short as the U.K.H.O. to provide top notch nautical charts to the vast Royal Navy. The first person to head the U.K.H.O. was the important cartographer Alexander Dalrymple. Dalrymple organized and catalogued the Admiralty’s collection of charts before beginning the laborious process of updating them and filling in the blanks. The first official Admiralty Chart appeared in 1800 and detailed Quiberon Bay in Brittany. By 1808 command of the Admiralty U.K.H.O fell to Captain Thomas Hurd. Hurd advocated the sale of the Admiralty to the public and, by the time he retired in 1829 had issued and published some 736 charts. Stewardship of the organization passed through several hand, including Admiral Sr. W. This is another fantastic RARE Antique Map from our Father's Collection. I am not a map expert. But did do some internet research. This map appears rare as I could not find another. Only ones in archives or reproductions. In reading about A.D. Bache I found that his maps/surveys were a very important part leading up to the Civil War. This specific Map of Charleston Harbor(Ft. Sumpter) etc. is mentioned as possibly the most important survey done of coastal South Carolina& Georgia prior to Civil war. The map is oriented with east at the top. Though important to global trade, a combination of numerous reefs, an unwelcoming coastline, and unpredictable wind patterns made mapping and navigating the Red Sea exceptionally dangerous for sailing ships. Consequently, the Red Sea was poorly understood and dangerous to navigate well into the 19th century, until the rise of steam powered ships mitigated some of these issues. The general vagary of this map is illustrative of the overall lack of maritime ... morereconnaissance in the region. Soundings are few and far between, being limited to the Sea of Suez. RARE Large 19th century Brass Nautical naval maritime Map/document Case/Tube
Here I have a very rare. Very unusual piece. I believe it to be a naval map case. It is all brass. Hand soldered. It is put together well to keep out water. And the top fits very snug on the piece. There are no makers marks or stamps that I can see anywhere. The piece measures 32.75" tall and 3.25 diameter. Which is very large for these cases. Usually these brass cases are in the 10" range. I honestly can not find very much information on this piece at all. I was told by a friend who does tinwork for reenactments that this is from the early to mid 19th century. I am not guaranteeing that. To me it seems like late 19th early 20th century. It was most likely for a private vessel since it is not stamped. Please ask any questions you have. We've acquired a group of authentic, large and beautiful nautical charts. The group was actually used. So many have authentic markings on all of them- including this one. This chart is dated"1986" so it's is over 25 YEARS OLD. It includes Harrisville Harbor. Rogers City and Calcite as well as Alpena Harbor Additional printed info: 1:120.000 23rd Ed. May 3/86 14864 Loran-C Overprinted Size: 36"W x 47.75"H(approximately) Condition: full color. Heavy weight paper, sturdy, some ex-tape marks on edges and some tape still on edges. Many large red marker notes on map. All six of the major interior fold corners have holes- from pencil-sized ... moreto one that is a full 1/2"tear length. The 2 bottom-edge folds have 1-inch vertical tears. The one lower right, right side fold has a 1/2" tear in it. There are a few pin holes(around 6) in the top 1/4 of the map. There is staining along the folds as well as other random small stains, tears, creases etc. NOTE: these maps are meant to last. So unlike normal paper the tears, pinholes, etc. do not affect the integrity of the map. They are very thick and not fragile.
