ITEM DESCRIPTION: This auction is for an original. Rare and well-preserved nautical map entitled“INSULAE FLANDRICAE OLIM ASORES DICTAE. Published in the 1690s by Valk and Schenk. The map was created using copperplates acquired from Jan Jansson, one of the leading cartographers of the seventeenth century. Measuring roughly 21 inches high by 24inches wide(including ample margins) The map retains soft yet crisp early coloring. Moreover. There is almost no toning or foxing within the printed field, nearly all noteworthy condition flaws being confined to the outer margins as shown. Lastly. To allay the concerns of prospective buyers, the map is accompanied by a“Certificate of Authenticity” issued by the president of the Portuguese Academy of Antique Arms. Printed on watermarked paper and bearing the Society’s official stamp. The Certificate reads ... moreas follows: SOCIEDADE PORTUGUESA DE ARMAS ANTIGAS/ PORTUGUESE ACADEMY OF ANTIQUE ARMS/ CERTIFICAT OF AUTHENTICITY/ To whom it may concern. We hereby declare that we have examined a map intitled: INSULAE FLANDRICAE OLIM ASORES DICTAE” We found it to be an original antique engraving printed about the year 1700. Most probably in 1694, by VALK, a publisher and engraver of Amsterdam, and PIETER SCHENCK. Both together bought in 1694 the original copper plates engraved about 1660 by JANSSON and reused them until about 1700. Jan JANSSON lived from 1588– 1664/ Gerard VALK lived from 1650– 1726/ Pieter Schenck lived from 1645– 1715/ The map was printed in black& white having been coloured by hand. One unusual and quite interesting aspect of the map is the name: INSULAE FLANDRICAE given to the Azores which derives of some of those islands having been partly colonized by flemish families during the second half of the XVth century. Nevertheless the major part of the azorean population is of Portuguese origin. Last corrections to 1972. One hand correction to 1974. The chart is 28" x 40.5" 103cm x 70cm) Chart details coasts of South Carolina. Georgia, and Florida from Cape Romain to Cape Kennedy. Chart is in excellent condition. There is some minor wear to the corners of the paper and a little bit of rippling in the left margin near center crease. The very faint reddish hue that may appear in some of the photos is only a reflection from the red sweatshirt I was wearing while taking the photographs. ... moreI assure you it is NOT on the actual chart. The chart has been folded in the middle but it has been so little used that this crease could be minimized by a professional framer. Please look at all twelve photos carefully. Old Copper Map Case / Document Tube Case – 16” Nautical Case
This is an old copper map or document tube case thought to be a nautical case. The copper tube measures 16 inches long. The bottom part is 12 5/8 inches and the cap is 5 3/8 inches. But when placed together they are 16 inches. The bottoms measure 2 5/8 inches in diameter. The case is marked with the initials"PS" inside a shield symbol. The tube is in very good condition. Roughly from Mecca(Jeddah, Geddah) to the Bab el Mandeb Strait(Mocha, Yemen and Assab, Eretria) The map is oriented with east at the top. Though important to global trade, a combination of numerous reefs, an unwelcoming coastline, and unpredictable wind patterns restricted mapping and made navigating the Red Sea exceptionally dangerous for sailing vessels. Consequently, the Red Sea was poorly understood dangerous to navigate well into the 19th century, until the rise of steam ships mitigated some of these issues.
