Publisher: The Admiralty refers to the Branch of the English government that is responsible for the command of the British Navy. In 1795 King George III created the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. Known in short as the U.K.H.O. to ... moreprovide top notch nautical charts to the vast Royal Navy. The first person to head the U.K.H.O. was the important cartographer Alexander Dalrymple. The first official Admiralty Chart appeared in 1800 and detailed Quiberon Bay in Brittany. By 1808 command of the Admiralty U.K.H.O fell to Captain Thomas Hurd. Hurd advocated the sale of the Admiralty to the public and, by the time he retired in 1829 had issued and published some 736 charts. Stewardship of the organization passed through several hand, including Admiral Sr. W. Edward Parry(who is known for his expeditions in search of a Northwest Passage) and Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort. By 1855 the Admiralty’s Chart Catalog listed some 1,981 charts. 1799 Laurie& Whittle Nautical Chart or Map of the Andaman& Nicobar Islands. India WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: A New Chart of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. With the Adjacent Islands, from the Draughts and Observations of Captn. Phins. Hunt, Captn. Mackay, Captn. John Ritchie, and Lieutt. Mc. Cluer, c. Description: A very scarce and exceptionally fine example of Laurie and Whittle’s 1798 nautical chart or maritime map of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The map covers from the Cocos Islands eastwards past Great Andaman. To Nicobar or Great Sambelong Island. Throughout, there are numerous depth soundings, notes on reefs, commentaries on the sea floor, and a wealth of additional practical information for the navigator. The routes taken by various navigators associated with the construction of this map, ... moreincluding Captains Hunt, Mackay, and Ritchie and Cluer are noted. The Andaman Islands were well known even in antiquity. Though Ptolemy may have mentioned them under a different name, they were definitely referred to by 9th century Arab geographers. In the 10 century the Persian navigator Buzurg ibn Shahriyar of Ramhormuz refers to them in his narrative Ajaib al-Hind( The wonders of India) Shahriyar describes the inhabitants of Great Andaman as fierce cannibals- most likely the source for the very similar comment appearing on our map. Marco Polo also refers to the Andamans where, in one of his more whimsical and memorable passages, he describes the inhabitants as having heads like dogs. Shortly before this map was issued, in 1789, the British admiral Archibald Blair founded a penal colony on Chatham Island, near the southeastern extension of Great Andaman. Two years later, the colony was moved to the opposite, northwestern, portion of the Island and renamed Port Cornwallis. Ravaged by disease, the colony was abandoned after just two years. Nonetheless, both regions are highlighted by inset maps located top center and the brief colonial incursion may be considered the origin

Plan of Junkseylon Island and of its Harbour on the Coast of Queda. Description: This is a fine example of Laurie and Whittle's 1798 nautical chart or maritime map of the Island of Phuket. Thailand and the Mergui Archipelago(on the coast of the Tenasserim Division) Burma(Myanmar) Essentially two maps on a single sheet, the righthand map details the Island of Phuket or Junk Ceylon along with its harbors and the coast of Queda(Kedah) One of the earlier maps to show Phuket in detail, the map notes the course of the HMS Heroine as it anchored in Phuket harbor in 1796, along with a note providing anchoring guidelines. Near the bottom border, ... morethe map includes coastal profile views of'Appearances from the Heroine at an Anchor in Junkseilon Harbor, May 1796' Today Phuket is one of the most visited islands in the world a major center of Thai tourism. In the 18th century Phuket was located on one of the important trading arteries between India and China, as well asa being itself a rich source of tin and rubber. The right hand map features Burma's Mergui Archipelago(consisting more than 800 islands) centered on Kings Island or the modern Kadan Kyun. When this map was issued this region was at the time under Imperial Burmese rule. Following the First Anglo-Burmese War the archipelago was ceded to Great Britian. The map offers rich detail including countless depth soundings, notes on the sea floor, commentary on reefs, rhumb lines, shoals, place names and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. This chart is cartographically derived from Jean-Baptiste d'Apres de Mannevillette’s similar chart issued for the 1745 Neptune Oriental with updates and rivisions by M. Forten, Master of the HM's Ship Heroine. This map was published by Laurie and Whittle from their offices at 53 Fleet Street, Lond

1798 Laurie& Whittle Nautical Chart or Map of Burma(Myanmar) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: A Chart of the Coast of Pegu with the Adjacent Coast of Arakan and Tanasserim. Description: A fine example of Laurie and Whittle’s 1798 nautical chart or maritime map of Burma. Myanmar, or as it was known in the 18th century, Pegu. The map covers the western extension of Southeast Asia from the city of Arakan(today the magnificent and almost impossible to access ruin of Mrauk-U) south along the coastline to the Irrawaddy River Delta, inland to Rangoon(Yangon, here identified as Dagon, for the awe inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda) and then south past the Gulf of Martaban(Mawlamyine) to the Kyan River and Tavay Point(formerly Victoria Point, currently Kawthaung, the Thailand-Myanmar border) The map offers rich detail including ... morecountless depth soundings, notes on the sea floor, commentary on reefs, rhumb lines, and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. The interior is predominantly blank and annotations on the map clearly refer to a general lack of information regarding the region. Nonetheless, the 1748 site of an English factory on the Persain River(Currently Pathein, Myanmar) is identified and various inland river routes are tenuously ghosted in. Four large inset maps fill the empty space. These include a plan of the Martaban River(modern Mawlamyine) and the sacred Buddhist shrine at Quekmay(Kyaiktiyo) the precariously balanced Golden Rock Pagoda. Another map illustrating the Arakan River entrance, though the map does not continue inland as far as the city of Arakan, today’s Mrauk-U. A third plan details the Sirian River, the modern Irrawaddy River, identifying the site of Rangoon(Yangon) as Dagon. A finally the fourth inset focuses on the entrance to the Perseen River, an important trade artery developed prior Rangoon and the site of an early British trading post at Pathein. To the left of the inset maps, there are three coastal profile views. This chart is cartog

1797 Laurie& Whittle Nautical Chart or Map of the West Coast of Sumatra(Bencoolen) Indonesia WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: A Chart fo the West Coast of Sumatra from Old Bencoolen to Buffaloe Point containing the Road of Bencoolen and Poolo Bay. Plan of Rat Island. Plan of Poolo Bay. Description: This is a fine example of Laurie and Whittle's 1794 nautical chart or maritime map of the west coast of Sumatra in the vicinity of Bencoolen or Fort Marlborough. The map is divided into three sections. The left hand side being a general nautical chart of the approaches to Bencoolen and Fort Marlborough, the right hand plans are details of Rat Island and Poolo Bay. Bencoolen(Bengkulu) was established as a pepper-trading center by the British East India Company in 1685. By the time this map was drawn Bencoolen ... morehas been renamed'Old Bencoolen' being superseded in 1714 by Fort Marlborough just to the south. The map offers considerable detail on the approaches to Bencoolen for which Rat Island(top right submap) is an important marker, as well as a staging post were vessels could dry anchor and dry nets. Poolo Bay(Pulau Bay) bottom right submap) some seven miles south of Fort Marlborough, was at the time an excellent harbor and anchorage. There our map identifies godowns or warehouses as well as lime kilns and a fresh water source. Laurie and Whittle prepared this chart for their 1799 issue of the East-India Pilot. Though most charts in the East-India Pilot were derived from earlier maps prepared for Jean-Baptiste d'Apres de Mannevillette’s 1745 Neptune Oriental, this particular chart is a new production unique to Laurie and Whittle. The map offers rich detail including countless depth soundings, notes on the sea floor, commentary on reefs, rhumb lines, shoals, place names and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. Cartographically it was derived from surveys by Captain Joseph Huddart, John Price, and one Mr. McDonald. This map was registered by Laurie and Whit
