J. Johnson's significant 1866 map of the Idaho. Montana, Wyoming, Dakota and Nebraska. Johnson first introduced this map in 1865 to accommodate a renewed interested in this region following the close of the American Civil War. During the Civil War period the vast Washington and Nebraska territories had been divided up into smaller territories including Idaho(1863) Montana(1864) and Dakota(1861) Though largely controlled by various American Indian nations, this region was becoming increasingly attractive for settlement and development. The proposed Governor Stevens route for the Northern Pacific Railroad passed through this region, as this ... moreregion as did the more favorable Central Pacific Railroad route and, to a lesser extent, the proposed Union Pacific Railroad route. This is also the first Johnson map to incorporate Wyoming- which is absent from the 1865 edition of this map. Note that, though Wyoming is demarked as a territory, the lettering of the territorial title is in a light outline typeface- a sharp contrast to the bold titles for Montana, Dakota, and Idaho. This is due to the fact that though the territory of Wyoming had been proposed by Representative J. M. Ashley of Ohio in 1865, it was considered a temporary measure. The region was not officially incorporated as a territory until 1868. This early configuration of the territory also truncates the border with Montana at 44.5 degrees north latitude, giving Wyoming a curious ephemeral western panhandle. Within Montana the western portions beyond the Rocky Mountains, are highlighted and identified as Missoula. In 1865 this region had only recently been settled by traders and missionaries. Contains folds as shown in photos but does not appear to have been opened and closed often over it's 114 year history. Paper has off-white antique patina. Paper is slightly slick like parchment paper that I bake on. And appears to be less porous than regular paper, and I'm guessing that's why this map is in such good condition while the other pages in the encyclopedia are not after 104 years. It was drawn by Alexander Keith Johnston(1804-71) who formed the business with his brother William Johnston. They became the most respected Scottish cartographers and map publishers of the19th century, producing the most detailed and accurate English language maps of the period, perhaps only rivaled in detail by the contemporary German August Petermann, who published for Stieler. Keith Johnston's name appears in the title ... morearea and the publishing details are in the bottom center margin. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as shown in the main pic. Overall, a beautiful rare map with nice color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches(32x42cm) on a 14 1/2 by 18" 37x46cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging and a centerfold as issued. There is some darkening around the eges and a couple of minor spots in the margins. Irvin Shope created this map in 1937 for the Montana State Highway Dept. This is an estate sale find and was stored folded in an area away from light. It was a 4 fold map but while stored it was folded in half again so there is some extra creasing. That being said the creases are mild and could likely be worked out with a pressing board. No rips. Stains or other damage to report. It is in very good condition. Off white paper with black lithograph print. This copy appears to have been published in 1937 for the Montana State Highway Department. On the cover it is marked on the lower right 37. Color map Lewis and Clarke Forest Reserve. Montana 1899 National Forests This is an original color map. Not a reproduction, printed around 1900. It shows the Lewis and Clarke Forest Reserve in Montana. The Forest Reserves later were retitled National Forests. This map is titled: Lewis and Clarke Forest Reserve Montana Showing Classification of Lands. Published by the U.S. Geological Survey it is dated 1899. It also states“Prepared under the direction of Henry Gannett. Geographer in charge, By H. B. Ayres. The map scale is about 1:500,000. The map sheet is about 14 ¾ by 17 ¼ inches in size, folded to about 7 by 11 inches. This map would make a great display item. It is a rare map. Only found now in research libraries. This is not a map removed from a bound atlas but rather a 14 by 17 inch sheet map showing data from 1899 and published ... moreby the U.S. Geological Survey in 1900. It shows the extent of the Lewis and Clarke Forest Reserve in 1899. The Forest Reserves later became the National Forests. The map shows the classifications of land in the reserve. The Legend has six categories of land cover: Burned; Bare Summits(rock) Prairie; and 3 levels of density of tree stands. It looks like about 1/3 of the Reserve was in the Burned category. The area in Montana covered by this map is bound on the: North by the line of the GNRR between Columbia Falls and Midvale; West by Flathead Lake and Mission Ridge; South by McLeoud Peak. Morrell, and Lewis and Clark Pass; and East by the Great Plains(treeless) Choteau, and Augusta. My scanner bed is too small to show the entire map. But see an image above of about 60% of the map to see the detail level and condition of the map. Also an image of the folded map is posted to show condition. The map is in very good condition. Especially for a 100-year-old map. The paper has yellowed somewhat and is starting to age and turn brittle. There is some browning in the margins and discolor along some fold lines. These vintage road maps are in various states of condition check below to see the condition of this map in red All are sold as is I have pictured ONLY the covers in some cases only due to the long process of unfolding folding and photography. If you are interested in seeing the full photographic condition of a particular map I will be more than happy to post additional pics showing the map in its entirity Description Grades listed below CRISP no soil. Wear, or creases. Station stamp is acceptable, as are small wrinkles introduced in printing. Age toning acceptable only if even. MINT As above. But minor edge wear seen. Light pencil marking okay. Age toning may be uneven. NEAR MINT As above. Professional routing marks or a minor annotation okay. Creases show usage. But map has not been misfolded. EXCELLENT As above. But wear is evident. Corners ... moreof inner creases may be beginning to separate, but less than 1 cm. May be rippled from water damage/high humidity but may not be foxed. Any dogear creases are not torn. There may be single tack holes. Map may have been misfolded. VERY GOOD As above. But separations extend less than half a panel span. If tears are not on a crease, each is less than 1 cm. Writing may be significant but does not damage front cover design. Map may be brittle but can be still opened flat without damage. Soil or scuffs can be present, but food or oil is absent. Fading is extensive. Minor foxing can be present, or minor insect damage i.e.silverfish skinning" not affecting information. GOOD As above. But problems are cumulative. Insect damage affects either the map or cover graphics. Extensive calculations, separations short of panel loss, or extensive foxing present. Map is still usable for navigation. FAIR As above. But damage extensive. Insect damage affects either the map information or cover graphics. Panels may be completely separate. Map may require isolation to prevent spread of oil stains or mold. Map may not be usable for navigation, but may still be valid for study. POOR FEEL FREE TO

1927 Highway Map and Guide of for Montana by the Mid-West Map Company(r23) This map is in good condition for it's age and is a great look at this state 87 years ago. It also includes locations of service stations and tourist locations complete with two digit phone numbers. Please be aware that these Road Maps are anywhere from 10 to 90 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So some of the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders and foldlines of the maps may also have tears. On occasion maps may smell musty ... morefrom the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. This is a nearly new map of Glacier National Park dated 1934. It was published as part of a guide to the park by the National Park Service. It is 18 inches wide and 16 inches high. It appears never to have been used. It is factory folded. The only flaw is a small tear on the left hand side that does not extend beyond the border line.

Printed more than 138 years ago. It is titled County Map of Colorado. Wyoming, Dakota, and Montana and was published in Philadelphia by S. Augustus Mitchell. Jr. 1874. The image area measures 50 x 36.5 cm[19-3/4" x 14-1/2" and the map has an attractive grapevine border. It shows the transcontinental railroad. Completed just five years before this map was published, running through Nebraska to Cheyenne and then west through Wyoming. Branch lines and spurs are also shown, as well as wagon trails and stage routes. The map also labels the routes followed by Fremont in his explorations of 1845 and 1853. Numerous Indian tribes are named. Including the Poncas, Cree, ... moreCrow, Pawnee, and Assiniboine, as well as various divisions of the Sioux or Dakota. Topography is delineated in shaded relief, and map locates military forts, mountain passes, towns, and early county boundaries.
