1852 Map California Oregon Utah New Mexico, Cowperthwait, different coloring
A New Map Of The State Of California. The Territories Of Oregon& Utah, and the Chief part of New Mexico" Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1850 by Thomas Cowperthwait& Co. This would normally be from an 1852 Mitchell's Universal Atlas. The map is about 15.5 by 12.5 inches. The map is page 37 of the atlas. The map includes counties in California and two in New Mexico. Besides all the topography, trails, roads, towns the map also includes Indian tribe locations. The map is from 1852 based upon counties shown and not shown. This map has different hand wash coloring scheme from all the other 1852 atlas maps documented on-line with several of the California counties being different colors or miss colored and the green of Utah Territory and southern New Mexico being different. The map is in very good condition except ... morethe paper is brittle. There is browning around the map as can be seen in the photos. The back has many stains from the coloring of states on the next page. These stains do not affect the front of the map. There has been one breakage of the paper repaired with archival tape on the back. The split is visible on the front if you look close but does not show up in the close-up photo very well. The breakage runs near the Rio Grand from San Juan River to South Pass and then from near Browns Hole to head of Bunkara R. Seller will pay for insurance and tracking.

Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. Please be aware that these National Geographic Maps are between 30 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. Some of them also have been written on with the date and location. Usually on back but sometimes on the edges. They may also have tiny holes beginning to form where the fold lines meet. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small ... moretears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. This is a color map titled: Mexico. The map measures about 9 by 12 inches and is on an about 10 by 13 inch sheet. Which is folded to about 7 by 10 1/8 inch. A narrow mounting strip is glued to the blank back of the map along the fold line through the center of the map. Printed on the map is"Copyright 1904 by The Americana Company. This is an original color map from 1904-1906. The map has been removed. By cutting the mounting strip, from: The Americana. A Universal Reference Library. 16 Volumes. Vol. X. Mar– New. New York: Scientific American, 1904-1906. The map is in good shape. Clean, no stains, and no markings, but slightly worn. There is slight warping from the mounting strip. Below the large title: cartouche may be seen the city of Mexico, situated on the shores of a large lake, described as an ample City, queen of all cities in the New World. Although the map maker gave no clues, the small lozenge-shaped symbols to the left of the cartouche probably indicate gold or silver mines. Description: This is John Tallis’s and J.H. Rapkin's highly desirable 1851 Map of Mexico. Texas and Upper California shortly after the Mexican American War and in the early days of the California Gold Rush. Texas is depicted at its fullest extent including both Santa Fe and the Green Mountains. Upper California offers numerous interesting elements, most specifically a colored and labeled Gold Region extending along the Sacramento River as far south as an oversized Lake Tule and Santa Cruz. The'Great Caravan Route' followed by covered wagons during the Westward Expansion is also noted as it snakes its way across northern Texans and southern California to Los Angeles. The ... morevarious Intendencia of Mexico are highlighted in outline color. The map also offers several beautiful vignettes by H. Warren and J. Rogers. These attempt to illustrate Mexican life, including Mayan ruins at Uxmal(Yucatan) gold panning in California, and'Mexican Peasantry' This map appeared simultaneously in several publications including Tallis' Illustrated Atlas and Hinton's History and Topography of the United States of America. Cartographically there are no significant differences between the versions, however, the imprint on the Illustrated Atlas map reads'John Tallis and Company, London and New York; while the History and Topography example reads'John Tallis, London, Edinburgh& Dublin' Those examples published with the History and Topography, as above, also have a centerfold sometimes not present in the Illustrated Atlas edition.
