Description: Published in Amsterdam by Mercator/Hondius ca. 1600. Artists and Engravers: Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain ... moreunder Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas.

1832 Lapie Map of the World on Mercator Projection WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Mappe-Monde sur la Projection de Mercator. Description: A fine first edition example of M. Lapie’s 1831 map of the world on a Mercator projection. Lapie’s map offers fine detail throughout with elevation rendered by hachure and political boundaries demarcated with outline hand color. A stunning map. Lapie very curiously centers his chart on Australia(Nouvelle Hollande) with the old and the new worlds appearing to the left and right, respectively. Cartographically it represents the most up to date discoveries of the time though limited geographical knowledge, particularly in Africa, Australia, and Central Asia, is in evidence. In Africa there is no trace of the great Rift Valley lakes and the source of the White Nile is set in the ... morespeculative Mountains of the Moon. The interior of Australia is blank though the coastal colonies around Botany Bay, including Sydney are noted. The disputed sea between Japan and Korea is here identified as the“Sea of Japan” This map was engraved by Armand Joseph Lallemand as plate no. 16 in the first edition of M. Lapie’s important Atlas Universel. This map, like all maps from the Atlas Universel features an embossed stamp from the Lapie firm. Size: Printed area measures 16.5 inches high by 22 inches wide. Want to buy-it-now instead of waiting for this auction to end? to find this same item in my ebay store. Item Description: This ebay listing is for the sale of a CD ROM publication Titled: Mercator Maps. Here are some sample images from this CD ROM: 98 images in Jpeg file format. These images from the famous Mercator Map book- Which was really the first world atlas. In fact. Mercator invented the term"atlas" to describe a collection of maps. His maps and globes where the first mass produced globes and maps the world generally saw. Ok- now the history- Mercator- whose full name was Gerardus Mercator or more properly the mouthful- Gerard de Kremer- was born a Flemish kid in the town of Rupelmonde. This is in 1512 so a bit back in history. He taught mathematics. Did brass plate engraving, wrote books including one on italic font engraving ... morefor maps. And make of course. Maps(fell into it by accident) Like most folks back then doing anything useful or creative. He was in trouble with the powers that be, including the church and moved locations and jobs several times to stay ahead of potential or probable problems from offended church or other groups. Few of his mass produced globes exist today. But their design has become ever since the world standard on how to make and display globes. His son continued to make globes and maps even after his dad's death. Rumold Mercator) This further ensured the enduring name of his methods of map making and cartography and globe making. These images. Minus all the more or less empty pages and the Latin text and label pages. are the meat of his most famous map book. His world atlas. We took the time to clean up the images. Correct colors as close as we could determine to the very bright original colors the pages had when new. And cropped the images to the content portions(the maps themselves) so that you get only the map. And that nicely fixed up, bright colorful again. And as clean as is reasonably possible for an old manuscript. Great for having printed out for wall de

STANFORD Mercator Map Pacific Island Polynesia Melanesia Oceania Australasia
Stanford's London Atlas Map of THE PACIFIC ISLANDS on Mercator's Projection London: Edward Stanford Date: c1901-1914* A large. Rare Pacific Islands map showing Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand. Dissected into 18 sections backed on to linen/ cloth. In a blue/ green cloth case with a yellow Stanford label to the front. There is no printed date visible. But"1914" has been written by hand to the front label. Certainly post-Victorian, with references to His Majesty the King. The earliest reference I could find online is to 1901 http:www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~34329~1171244:The-Pacific-Islands-on-Mercator-s-p. Size unfolded: 66cm x 51cm Size folded(in its case) 17cm x 11.8cm Features include identification of uninhabited islands. Submarine cables, active ... morevolcanoes etc, equatorial and counter-currents, reefs, colonies in full colour, relief shown by shading and spot heights, soundings in fathoms, etc. Condition: the map is about good overall. The paper and linen have tanned slightly with age. There is 1cm square of rubbing in the fourth section across the top. Although this does not appear to have resulted in any loss to any information. A couple of very small ink notations to the margin. The linen has has been repaired in a couple of places with durable pale green cloth. There is a 9cm split to one of the folds. The map is securely bound into its case. The case boards are in decent shape with a little rubbing to the corners. And some soiling to the label. The spine has been reinforced with the same green cloth used to reinforce the linen. In spite of these faults. This is an attractive and interesting map.

1595 Mercator: Map of England west midlands & N. Wales
Fine. Original, copper-engraved map of the west midlands of England and northern Wales, by Gerardus Mercator: Westmorlandia, Lancastria, Cestria, Caernarvan, Denbigh, Flint, Merionidh, Montgomery, Salopia Cum Insulis Mania Et Anglesey. From from an early French edition of Atlas sive Cosmographicae, Amsterdam, 1595] Dimensions 18" x 22 1/4(overall) 14 1/4" x 16 1/4" engraved surface. Fine, original color. Light staining in margins, browning, otherwise fine. A good dark, early impression. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without ... moreserious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years.

Winning bidder will be getting a beautiful and rare vintage print of a Map of the Americas as it was thought to be in 1620 by Mercator. It is also very beautifully colored, the pictures do not do it justice! Featured in circles are Cuba, Haiti, and the Gulf of Mexico.
