Artists and Engravers: Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics. Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" the first modern"Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term"Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Parallel lines visible when the paper is held to light. The lines are usually a few millimeters apart. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. It use was diminished by the 1790's by the introduction of wove paper(which eliminated the ribbed lines for a smoother printing surface. A copperplate engraving is an intaglio process. I.e. it is the grooves, rather than the raised portions that are inked. The steps are: 1. A drawing is cut into a copper plate using a burin, a metal tool with a sharp point, to remove the metal and create the lines of the drawing. 2. Printed in Amsterdam 1619 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the regional map(Keuning 1585.6) of the Duchy of Anjou in the lower Loire valley by the renowned(1512-1594) Bisected by the Loire and centred on Angers. The map was first published by Mercator in 1585 with the cartography based in part on an earlier map by t he poet and geographer Lécin Guyet(1515-1580) With this example of the map printed for the 1619 French edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Mercator's eponymous world map. Which in the felicitous phrase of his Nicholas Crane"reconciled the sphere and the plane" Combined with his unsurpassed dedication and skill as a cartographer and engraver make him ... morewithout question the most famous mapmaker of all time. The master engraver(and a fine geographer in his own right) 1563-1612) purchased Mercator's map copperplates from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as the foundation of the Atlas Hondius added maps of his own. 1628 Mercator Map- Aragonia et Catalonia Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. The"Reliance" was a 19.618 gross ton ship, built in 1914 by J.C.Tecklenborg as the"Johann Heinrich Burchard" for. Her details were- length 590.4ft x beam 72.5ft. Three funnels, two masts, triple screw and a speed of 17 knots. There was passenger accommodation for 315-1st, 301-2nd and 850-3rd class. She carried a crew of 480. Launched on 10/2/1914, she was provisionally delivered on 20/11/1915 but due to the Great War, never sailed under her original name. On 8/6/1916 she was handed over to as reparations for Dutch neutral ships sunk by the Germans. And renamed"Limburgia" In 1918 the Allies demended the transfer of the ship and a long delay ensued. On 3/2/1920 ... moreshe left Bremerhaven for Amsterdam, still under claim and then served on the South America route. Finally, in 1922 she was transferred to United American Line, New York under agreement with Germany to re-open a passenger service between New York and Hamburg. She was refitted to carry 290-1st, 320-2nd and 400-3rd class passengers, 19,582 gross tons and renamed"Reliance" On 2/5/1922 she commenced her first Hamburg- Southampton- Cherbourg- New York voyage and in 1923 was transferred to the Panamanian flag. Her last voyage on this service commenced 25/6/1926 and she was then re-acquired by Hamburg America Line. On 24/8/1926 she resumed Hamburg- Southampton- Cherbourg- New York sailings for these owners and in May 1930 was refitted to carry 1st, tourist and 3rd class passengers. In June 1931 she was again altered to carry 1st and tourist class only and on 6/8/1935 started her final Hamburg- New York voyage. She was subsequently engaged in cruising until 1937 when she was modernised by Blohm& Voss, fitted with broader funnels and given accommodation for 633-1st and 186-2nd class passengers. 1628 Fine Mercator Map of Central Germany
1628 Mercator Map- Thuringia Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos.
