Jansson began to prepare his volume devoted to the British Isles c.1640. In 1644 he published eleven county maps in an appendix to the"Atlas" Ut they appeared from 1646 in the"Novus Atlas" Jansson's county maps are seen far less frequently than those of his rival Blaeu, but are similar in appearance with coats of arms and decorative title cartouches. Jansson, like Blaeu, used Speed maps when creating his own thus showing hundreds but no roads. However, Jansson(and Blaeu) chose to omit Speed's innovative town plans. Mapmaker: Jan Jansson or Johannes Janssonius(1588- 1664) was born in Arnhem. Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. These images from the famous Mercator Map book- Which was really the first world atlas. In fact. Mercator invented the term"atlas" to describe a collection of maps. His maps and globes where the first mass produced globes and maps the world generally saw. Ok- now the history- Mercator- whose full name was Gerardus Mercator or more properly the mouthful- Gerard de Kremer- was born a Flemish kid in the town of Rupelmonde. This is in 1512 so a bit back in history. He taught mathematics. Did brass plate engraving, wrote books including one on italic font engraving for maps. And make of course. Maps(fell into it by accident) Like most folks back then doing anything ... moreuseful or creative. He was in trouble with the powers that be, including the church and moved locations and jobs several times to stay ahead of potential or probable problems from offended church or other groups. Few of his mass produced globes exist today. But their design has become ever since the world standard on how to make and display globes. This is an awesome work of art. The World of Mercarto's Projection full colored map of the world. I have never seen one of these maps with animals before. Lion. Elephant, giraffe, monkeys appearing in their natural habitat and stunningly depicted. The colors are amazing. This really is great. Neat in a den or fun in a child's room. It is framed and measures 21 1/2" x 17 3/4" The upper left hand corner of the frame needs to be pushed together a bit. The seam has come apart. Other than that- excellent condition. Any questions. A large map(56cms x 45cms- the map image itself 43cms x 31.5cms) of 4 Islands in the vicinity of the UK: Anglesey. Wight, Jersey and Guernsey. Taken from the first-ever Atlas(the first use of the word to indicate a collection of maps) by Gerard Mercator. The English Maps first appeared in Vol. 3 which was first issued in 1595. Latin text verso. These are beautiful maps with fine calligraphy and decorative details. Note the two different treatments of the sea. That surrounding Guernsey and the Isle of Wight is depicted by the famous"shot silk" engraving. Other 16th century symbols include the"mole-hill" depiction of high ground. 1625 Mercator Map- Tartaria Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. METAL MODEL OF FRENCH LINE PASSENGER SHIP' SS LIBERTE' BUILT BY BLOHM AND VOSS. ORIGINALLY SS EUROPA) HAMBURG 1928. 49,746 TON, 283 METRES, 27 KNOTS, 2 139 PASSENGERS. SS Europa. Later SS Liberté. 5607332. Was a German ocean liner built for the line(NDL) to work the sea route. She and her sister ship. Bremen. Were the two most advanced, high speed steam turbine ocean vessels in their day, and were a part of the international competition for the The French line took over ownership and brought the vessel to Le Havre for refitting into their service as a replacement for Normandie. The most obvious change was the repainting of her funnels from NDL yellow to the red funnels and black tops of the CGT. On December 8. 1946 a storm caused her to break free from her moorings and she collided with the wreck of Paris. Causing significant ... moredamage to her hull. She was raised in April 1947 and towed to the Shipyard in to complete her refitting. She suffered some further damage when the ship caught fire once again in October 1949. Resulting in damage to some of her passenger interiors. Finally. On August 2, 1950, after five years and two near disasters, she made her maiden voyage to under her new name. Liberté. She served under French line until 1962. When she was retired and was scrapped in 1963, due to the SS France coming out in 1961 and the French line also wanted to replace most of their fleet.
