Hubert Jaillot and Pierre Duval were the most important French cartographers of the seventeenth centuries. Jaillot, originally a sculptor, became interested in geography after his marriage to the daughter of Nicolas Berey(1606-65) a famous map colourist, and went into partnership in Paris with Sanson's sons. There, from about 1669, he undertook the re-engraving, enlarging and re-publishing of the Sanson maps in sheet form and in atlases, sparing no effort to fill the gap in the map trade left by the destruction of Blaeu's printing establishment in Amsterdam in 1672. Many of his maps were printed in Amsterdam(by Pierre Mortier) as well as in Paris. There are a couple of navigational courses charted on it in pencil very lightly. Chart shows southern portion of Ireland, Wales, southern England, North West France. This was a high-end publication, so all the engravings and chromolithographs are highly detailed, and well printed. They were produced by experts in the relevant field, and intended for educational use, so were meticulously accurate, as well as works of art in their own right. GENERAL NOTE ON CONDITION: The prints from this encyclopaedia series are over 120 years old. And there is the expected evidence of age, which may include toning especially at the page edges, foxing, handling marks, slight waviness of the paper and a degree of fragility. Most maps and engravings from this period were bound into books, rather than issued separately. That is the case with this series, and the plates were carefully bound in, using a method that minimises damage to folded plates/ maps. Any apparent border around the scanned or photographed images in the listing has been provided so that buyers may assess the print in its entirety- it's not on the actual item. SHIPPING: Flat.
