The colors are uniformly muted; they are consistently soft overall. You might say faded. But the colors are uniformly faded if that makes sense. Antique. Linen backed, Ordnance Survey map- Sheet 29, 2 Miles to one inch) of north London and the home counties- it is dated 1911. Fenny Stratford to the North-west, Aylesbury to the west and Maidenhead and London to the south. Brentwood is in the south-east corner. The Map is in good condition with no splits or tears. It may have spots of light visible at the corners of the folds and the chart area has been marked with a coloured pencil in the lower right corner. Nevertheless it looks excellent and the marks are very faint and will probably erase. 1782 Uncommon Bowles Map of London, Surrey & Sussex Roads
1782 Bowles Map- Untitled Carington Bowles was a very successful English publisher of maps and prints during the latter part of the eighteenth century. Not much of his output was genuinely original and he inherited or acquired a lot of material from earlier cartographers. One of his publications was"Bowles Post-Chaise Companion" a small compendium of road maps which updated the earlier work of Ogilby. Bowen, Senex and Gardiner. This work is fairly hard to find. This attractive map of the main roads from London through Surrey and Sussex comes from a 1782 edition of"Post-Chaise Companion" It includes the section through Stretham. Cryodon, East Grinstead, Lewes, and New Haven, and from New Haven to Shoreham. There is lovely detail to small villages, hills, woods and the coastline. There is a fold down the middle with a light water stain visible along the bottom section of the fold. Some foxing. Edges have no tears. Reverse of the map is blank. Measures 27 x 22 cm approx. Stanford's Library Map London and its suburbs 24 sheets 1862 -1869
Stanford's Library map consists of 24 sheets. Each 45 x 38cm detailing London in 1860's. The issue date is 1862 however individual sheets show the date of the correction. The latest correction is 1869 and this is taken as the date of printing. See picture#2 All of the 24 maps are in good condition with very little yellowing. I have included a colour calibration reference card. One sheet(11) has an ink stain on the margin. This does not affect the map area. Several sheets show a pencil trace detailing a journey from Stanford Road(sheet 9) going west via the embankment(sheet 10) to locations close to Finsbury Circus(sheet 11) and there are calculations on the back of one sheet to calculate the distance as 5 miles 880feet. The cover is intact but in poor condition and the edges are frayed. This is a rare. However, there is an earlier copyright date of 1860 along the bottom margin in small print that states"Entered according to an Act of Congress in the year 1860 by Augustus Mitchell in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. A copy of the title page is also included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single ... moresheet as seen in the first pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 by 13 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page(31x39cm) with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good to Very Good condition for its age. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a few minor smudges around the margin, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better.
