Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. Map 23 covers Kew, Richmond and Kingston. Map 24 shows Londons environs and map 25 is a map of Kew Gardens. The remaining pages of the book gives information on the more important buildings and structures, and an index to the sectional maps. A later underground map has been pasted into the inside front cover, and this map is an older tube map possibly dating around 1913. Condition/ Defects: The book is complete though it has been well used. Several pages are loose. A few have some pencil annotation in blank areas, but are generally clean, and all are legible. It is a cloth bound pocket atlas, showing the central parts of London in colour maps, outlying areas in black and white, and a variety of floor plans of tourist attractions such as St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London and the British Museum, as well as a black and white Underground map. There is also a complete Street List and Building list in the back, documenting many streets and areas which will have now disappeared. Cheaply mass produced. It has the feel of an old children's book, with card covers with cloth backing- these were meant to be cheap, disposable items and not many survive in good condition. Vintage London Underground Map 1939 - Rare Scheger Version (Not HC Beck)
This rare edition of the London Underground Pocket map. Printed in 1938 and designed by Hans‘Zero’ Scheger, is one of the rarest around. Printed for just 1 year(until 1940) this map represents an extraordinary moment in the history of the London Underground. Unbeknown to the designer of the iconic schematic map. Harry Beck, it must have been a shock to him as he apparently was not aware that someone else had been requested to design the map for that year. In a quote from a letter to the Publicity Officer in June 1938, taken from the book"Beck's Underground Map" he had written: I have just happened to see a proof of a new Underground folder. The'H.C.Beck' diagram has been used. But with considerable and, I suggest, undesirable, alterations by another artist- one not on the staff- without reference to me. This map looks ... morelike it has been printed yesterday. Not at the start of WWII. A rare piece of history in perfect condition. As can be seen. The design uses a technique, by means of a coloured background, to highlight the central area(not unlike the technique used on today's map to show the tariff zones) The lines are not as wide as Beck's design and the interchange stations are illustrated by black circles, a feature that was returned to after Beck's last map in 1960. The intention, on this map, had been to eliminate the need for the peculiar interchange map that had been appearing on the back of the maps since 1935. This map is available to anyone in the world.

Vintage London Underground Map 1919 – Original *RARE*
Map of the Electric Railways of London. What to See and How to See It' Available Framed with custom mount for £169. See my other listing. Map measures 33cm x 26cm when open. Folds down to pocket size. Just 10 years after the original unified map of the London Underground. This was the first map produced following the end of the First World War. This map is the first to use the Johnston typeface, used by London Transport to this day(see below) Maps produced in the earlier years of the war were subjected to certain economies in the way of paper quality and style. The materials and expertise required to print in colour were not readily available and so the maps had been very limited in this regard. This map features a full reintroduction of the use of different colours to signify the different company lines. But unlike most examples ... moreof the 1919 map, this example has a Black and White front cover and thinner paper; an economy then, but making this map extremely rare edition of the map today. The line colours on this map have seen some changes from the 1914 version: the Piccadilly Line. Which had been in yellow now appears in blue. The Inner Circle has been given its own identity for the first time and is shown in hatched green. The scheme deployed on this map has, essentially, been retained and will be familiar to today's underground traveller. However. What makes this map most significant in the history of the underground is the first use of the famous"Johnston" typeface, commissioned by the Underground Group and designed by calligrapher Edward Johnston. This font is still used today, across all London Transport branding. The cover of the map includes a new update of the'bullseye' logo using the new typeface; however the remaining part of the cover still retains the old typeface. Vintage London Underground Map 1946 - HC Beck *Excellent Condition*
A lovely example of this post-war London Underground map 1946 by HC Beck. Who at this stage had adopted a new'rectilinear' approach, seeing most of the lines run North-South with just a few diagonal exceptions. Beck was encouraged by the management to revise his design in order to reduce the diagonal lines to an absolute minimum. Beck observed'I have rather tended to work on the assumption that elimination of unnecessary bends in the lines has made the diagram progressively easier to use' The picture is nicely divided by a cross formed horizontally through the centre by the Central Line and vertically by the Northern Line. One downside to this design was that the last station, on the Richmond branch of the District Line, is not shown adjacent to the river where it correctly belonged; this was not rectified until 1951. Since ... more1939. Lord Ashfield(LT Chairman) had insisted that station names should appear labelled in the colour of the lines, seeing duplication(or in some cases triplication) of the station names. To Becks delight, officials finally agreed that he could do away with the duplication of station names for different lines. This 1946 map is the first version to return to single station names, labelled in black. And so it has been every since. This map sees a garish border on the front cover designed by Captain Shepard. This only lasted a year making this a rare map indeed. This map is a fine addition to a collection or an ideal framed gift. As with all my maps. I am making it available to anyone in the world.

Original antique map of Blackfriars & Southwark, London, c1776
An original copper engraved. Antique plan of part of central London, south of the River Thames(A MAP OF THE SURREY SIDE OF THE THAMES FROM WESTMINISTER BRIDGE) The map dates from c1766(from the London Magazine) showing the layout of proposed routes for Blackfriars' Road to Blackfriars' Bridge. The mile long road was eventually completed in the last quarter of the 18th century. The map is unframed and uncoloured. It measures 200x260mm and among notable features are Lambeth Palace. Blackfriars' Bridge and the King's Bench Prison. The map has some slight age toning and offsetting(there is a mirror image of a page from the London/Gentleman's Magazine verso) The top of the map appears to have been trimmed with loss of border. An original antique map of FARINGDON WARD. LONDON by Thomas Bowen. First published in The London Magazine c1768. And then in John Noorthouck's History of London in 1772. The map which is copper engraved is unframed. Hand coloured and has a printed area of 235x185mm. It features a rococo style cartouche and the arms of the 18th century libertarian, John Wilkes. The map covers the western area of the City including Holborn, Fleet Street, Smithfield and the surrounding area. Among prominent buildings named on the map are the medieval Temple and St Bartholomew's churches.This is an attractive large scale plan and is in excellent condition. Check out my! Stanford map for the Daily Mail- 1937 double sided on thick paper. Large map covering South East England's arterial roads and bypasses. The reverse side covers a 10 mile area around the centre of London. There are one or two tiny holes were the crease lines meet and some crease lines are slightly discoloured. The cover is slightly marked. But generally both cover and map are whole and in a fair condition.
