Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. Wells Park road/Upper Sydenham station(the railway runs through the centre of the map) Dartmouth road, Eliot Bank. The condition is very good- nice and clean. It is crumpled at the top left hand corner area and has a small tear across the top right hand corner. It previously belonged to Nottingham Trent University and has their stamp on it(visible in the photo) There is also a stamp from the OS office. This is a very nice detailed map of the area. Not much of his output was genuinely original and he inherited or acquired a lot of material from earlier cartographers. One of his publications was"Bowles Post-Chaise Companion" a small compendium of road maps which updated the earlier work of Ogilby. Bowen, Senex and Gardiner. This work is fairly hard to find. This attractive map comes from a 1782 edition of"Post-Chaise Companion" It shows the main road from London to Salisbury in Wiltshire passing through Hounslow. Staines, Basingstoke and Andover. Each section is 17.5 x10cm. So the map is approximately 70x 100cm! Regents park is nearly on the periphery of Greater London, Shepherds Bush has the potential for sheep, Finchley& Edgeware Road run through fields and Stratford is an isolated New Town! The photographs will open into a new window if you click on them. I've photographed the worst bits-its generally STUNNING Condition. All but the first page(which is glued to the front board) of the visitor's quide is missing. I can't find another example of this booklet& map to establish how much is lost. The map unsurprisingly has split along many of the folds. These have been ... morerepaired with museum issue acid-free repair tape. As have a few closed splits and it looks really good. There are two patches of an oily stain near the bottom of the map and a couple of small pen marks. Some of the folds have darkened and there is slight foxing where the glue that attached the map to the boards is.The map is crying out to be mounted behind glass(but out of the sun since the colours are still stunningly vibrant. It would probably benefit from a gentle ironing since the pages closest to the book boards are rather creased! Starting from a penny with no reserve. Later editions of this map. Removed from the book boards, are up for sale for silly money. Terms: We post within one working day of payment clearing and insurance is included. It is matted with a blue-gray color mat. It is framed with a wooden frame. The outside dimensions of the frame are about 16 inches by 13 inches. In the lower right corner. In very small print it indicates, Engraved by A. I can’t read it. The map is colored by hand. I think. It is nicely done. Obviously. The knowledge of map ... moremakers about Africa was limited in 1837. For example the map indicates. I of Bourbon” and“I of France. There are suggestions of a few mountain ranges. And the“Sahara or Great Desert. I think this map would be a valued addition to a collection of maps from before 1850. Or a collection of maps of Africa, or a collection of maps by Thomas Kelly, or?
