Each map is an original. I removed them from the atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimetres(and inches) Sheet: 481 x 398(18¾ x 15½) Map: 408 x 337(16 x 13⅛) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. The maps have a single fold in the center. This is the first Stieler Atlas to have been printed using the lithographic method. The colors are strong and vibrant. These maps are printed on ONE SIDE ONLY. Note: These maps are from a German Atlas. Geographical names and any text are. Naturally, in German. Condition Very Good. Unless otherwise noted in red. This is an old. Vintage foldout map by Edward Stanford, Ltd. I could not find a date of publishing/printing. The map is mounted on linen and affixed in a case which is about 5 inches by 7 inches. There are 18 fold sections: 3 rows of 6 sections each; the sections are about 4 1/2 inches by 6 3/4 inches. The linen at the folds is intact. Unfolded the map measures 19 inches by 26 inches. The front cover has a yellow label printed"London Atlas Map of the Pacific Ocean" London: Edward Stanford, Ltd. Cartographers to His Majesty the King. 12,13& 14 Long Acre, W.C.2. Inside the front cover are two printed yellow label advertisements: one for"Stanford's Compendium of Geography& Travel" and one for"Stanford's Library Maps" the former also has small label(not, I think,part of original) C.S. There is also a booklet titled"The Pacific Ocean"also published by Stanford but I don't know if it was part of the original. There is a pencil notation in the upper right corner of the booklet. At the bottom of the map. from left to right are: London Atlas Series; Mollweide's Homolographic(equal area) projection; Equatorial Scale 1: 37.566, 325; Printed in Great Britain; Edward Stanford. An attractive and large steel-engraved. Hand-coloured county map of Middlesex, published by Greenwood and Co in London in 1829. The map depicts the county of Middlesex in some detail and also includes a decorative title cartouche, compass rose, Explanation' and'Reference to the Hundreds' as well as two very fine engravings of St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The printed area measures approx 650mm x 540mm with margins beyond and the sheet is blank verso. Overall the map is in quite good condition with a clean and clear impression. However. Buyers should note that there are large closed tears at the top and bottom of the centrefold, the top one in particular extends 20cm into the printed area, fortunately without any loss. There is a further closed tear to the top left part of the sheet extending into the border(again ... morewithout loss) and occasional nicks to the edges of the sheet. This fold becomes nearly invisible when the map is laid flat. If the map is framed. The fold becomes completely invisible unless inspected very closely. Condition The maps are in very good condition. The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional spot or unobtrusive mark in the margins of a few ... moreof the maps. 1832 SDUK: Map of the Environs of London
Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of the environs of London, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. The idea for the town plans, of which the SDUK published many dozens, was that of W. B. Clarke, an architect, who became an enthusiastic advocate for the plans, and who executed ... moremost of them himself, often on the basis of personal on-site observations. The plans are highly decorative, and often have accompanying vignettes, or sketches of the main buildings. Finely engraved, the plans set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. Dimensions 16 1/4" x 13 1/2" overall. Marylebone, London – Antique Segmented Map, Late 19th Century (I think)
A very detailed Edward Stanford map of the area. Undated. But my view is that it’s late nineteenth century; the reason being I believe the boundary shown on the map is the old parliamentary constituency as it existed from 1868 to 1885. The basis for the map is the six-inch to a mile map of London first published by Stanford’s in 1872, but this map has definitely been updated from then. The reason for the map is to show the locations of schools. Against the hugely detailed street plan. Condition is very good. The sheet measures approx 72cm x 76cm. And the paper map has been dissected into 12 segments and mounted on linen, as originally issued. The map itself is evenly toned and remains clean and very fresh in appearance. The linen showing through is slightly dust soiled along the bits exposed when folded, with also the paper along the bottom ... morehorizontal fold a littled browned) but overall very good and without holes. On the verso lightly tanned and a very small amount of bubbling- but overall very clean and flat and there is marbled paper on the folded end segments with minor handling marks. Clapham, London - Huge Late 19th Century Segmented Map, Faults
A very detailed. Segmented map of the area around Clapham Common in SW London. There isn’t a title or a scale on the map, but physically it measures approx 193cm x 105cm; printed on paper and mounted on linen, as issued. 24 segments folding into two marbled endpapers. The area covered is N-S from the south part of Battersea Park and Nine Elms Works(today’s New Covent Garden) to the top bit of Tooting Bec Common and what was then Magdelen Hospital; W-E from the west side of Clapham Common eastwards to beyond Bedford Drive and just into Brixton. As I say, hugely detailed. No date but I’d guess late nineteenth century; the area marked I believe is part of the Clapham parliamentary constituency from 1885 to 1918 and Clapham Common tube station, which opened in 1900, isn’t shown. Some of the wards are hand coloured and the red circles show the ... morelocations of churches. In summary on condition I guess the paper part of the map is good and the linen part not so good. The paper segments are very clear and quite fresh in appearance. There is damage to the paper at the very top of the bottom right segment; one other small graze; a few marks. Dust soiling and pinholes in the top corners. On the verso though each intersection of the segments is supported with tape, as are the gaps between the segments on the edges; also the whole of the marble endpapers are taped around. The endpapers themselves are rather battered. When packaged this will be a‘small parcel’ using the new Royal Mail terminology. First class postage is £3.00 plus 90p for packaging materials.
