Imago Poloniae TN12) of Poland and parts of what is now Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Here Ortelius drew upon an earlier map by the Silesian churchman and cartographer(1535-1591) which in turn was based on the famous of(1450-1535) which was published in 1526 and is considered the first modern map of Poland. Interestingly. It is generally believed that none other than Nicolaus Copernicus assisted Wapowski in the compilation of the original woodcut map. The version ... moreused by Ortelius for this handsomely engraved plate was revised by Czech cartographer Andreas Pograbius(Pograbka) and some of these revisions are reflected in changes from the earlier Ortelius map of Poland which was published from 1570 until its replacement with this plate in 1595. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Title cartouche credits both Grodziecki and Pograbius- note bold pictorial topography. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Krakow(Cracovia) to Sandomierz(Sendomiria) as seen in the enlarged photo below measures just 6 cm actual size: Near Kiev we see caves said to serve as tombs for nobility. While just a bit up the river the sleepy village of Czernobel was still centuries away from disaster. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. 1751 Vaugondy Map- Pologne The Vaugondy family produced a large number of atlases from about 1740 to the end of the century. Apart from the large'Atlas Universelle' and the small'Atlas Militaire' They allowed their maps to be'licensed' by other publishers, none more obviously so than in the many editions of'Methode abregee et facile pour apprendre la Geographie' dedicated to Mme Crozat. These went through many editions from 1751 until well into the 1800's. The editions in the 1700s all used Vaugondy maps, often dated 1755, but issued into the 1780's. Later 18th century editions had new maps engraved but faithfully following Vaugondy's outdated geography of up to half a century earlier. The first edition of 1751 is quite scarce. This map of the Kingdom of Poland and the Duchy of Lithuania comes from ... morethe first edition of that work. Published in 1751. The major regions are named(such as Mazovie, Prusse, Petite Pologne, Poldolie, Volhinie, Lithuanie, Russie Noire, Curlande) all major towns and cities are noted, and rivers are illustrated. There is a scale of distance. The map measures 6" by 6" with two folds(as issued) Has outline colouring, and is in fairly good condition- there is a little staining to the top where the blank margin is very narrow.
