It is one of six Missouri River dams, four being located in South Dakota. The dam was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944 and plays a key role in the Pick-Sloan Plan for development of water resources in the Missouri River basin. The Corps of Engineers began construction of Fort Randall Dam in 1946, and it was the first Pick-Sloan dam completed by the Omaha District. President Dwight D. Eisenhower threw the switch that started the first power generating unit in 1954. When completed in 1956, Fort Randall Dam and the Lake Francis Case Project cost approximately $200 million. Large(99 cm x 75 cm. 39” x 30” cloth/ linen-backed map of‘Nottingham and Derby District’ 2¼ inches to 5 miles, produced by Geographica and‘based upon the Ordnance Survey maps’ Undated, but the lack of ring roads for towns such as Newark, Nottingham, Derby(let alone motorways! suggests pre-1950. The road numbering(e.g. 5’ and‘38’ instead of‘A5’ and‘A38’ and the complete lack of numbering for B-roads, point to perhaps the 1930s. All railway lines are also clearly shown. Despite the title of the map. The area covered is large– from Buxton and Lincoln in the north, to Walsall and Stamford in the south, and from Hanley and Stafford in the west to Wragby and Bourne in the east. Very good condition subject to heavy folds and isolated tearing along the folds. Although the map is held very well together by the blue cloth(or linen) backing. This is an original vintage linen-backed Ordnance Survey map of Land’s End retailed Clark’s Library. Penzance at the price of 2/6. It is dated inside 1934. Its scale is one inch to the mile. It is printed on very heavy linen-backed cartridge paper with heavy card covers. It shows great detail including height contours etc. etc. For condition please study the photographs carefully. I think it is in absolutely superb used condition especially for its age– considering it is over 80 years old. Doing a little research this is the best one I can see. There is, of course, minor use soiling and general use wear with the odd scuff and short split to the cover. Antique United States Map 1845 Augustus Mitchell Large Map Linen Canvas Back
What I have here is a 1845 map of the United States but from the legend it looks to be made in 1845 but of the United States in 1840. This is a Augustus Mitchell map. Engraved by J.H. Brightly and drawn by J.H. Young. This map looks to have been hung in a library or perhaps a school or maybe even in a town hall somewhere. It has two wooden ends in a scroll style to roll it up. It is separating from the wood because it is only held in by nails and tacks. I would imagine that it doesn't matter much because I would expect this to be framed behind some museum glass. Of course being as old as it is it does have some condition issues. Some staining. Some crackling, and some minor tears but nothing really major. The map is on a linen type or canvas back. VERY RARE: Large MAP of significant historical interest. Of HALIFAX HARBOUR Nova Scotia. 1916(last update and corrections from an original survey by W. F. Maxwell from 1889. Re-surveyed in 1915) Publication info. As printed: London, Published at the Admiralty 27th July 1891. New editions Jan 1909. 30th Jan 1914, 8th Sept. 1916. Magnetic variation in 1918. VERY DETAILED topographical and navigational chart from the era. Last corrected in 1916 the year before the famous Halifax Harbour Explosion. Which occured December 6th. 1917 and which destroyed or damaged over 12.000 buildings, leaving over 1950 people dead and 9,000 injured. The town was then submitted to an explosion blast(said to be the strongest ever before the atomic bomb) To huge fires. A tsunami. And many injuries and damage resulting from a pressure wave that sent debris flying ... moreand glass shattering kilometers away. The community of Richmond was completely obliterated. And that of Dartmouth. Across from the harbour area suffered widespread damage. Following the catastrophe. The harbour, docks, industrial quarter and west downtown were considerably remodeled through reconstruction. We cannot tell whether this map was made as the city was just BEFORE the explosion. Or just AFTER. since there is a date of 1918 for the magnetic variation. It seems likely that the overall survey was done BEFORE the explosion. Since no corrections or new surveys are stated after September 1916. Leaving little time for changes before 1918, as the explosion took place in December 1917. However. THIS MAP may be one of the most significant existing maps for the city and harbour of Halifax at the very time of the explosion. Possibly showing the state of the city just before its destruction. The map was originally issued in TWO SHEETS. For a total size of 26 5/8" x 39 1/4" 68 x 100 cm) And our copy is LINEN BACKED- thus a very WELL-PRESERVED COPY of this important document. Over 200 years old in very nice clean condition, complete with the original slipcase The Map is backed onto linen in sections, and folds nicely into the slipcase; as issued in 1804; engraved by Smith and Jones Pentonville. Beautifully hand coloured. Without any fading. Size of the map is 20 inches by 18. Plus the blank margins. All the roads are shown. Plus the small villages and towns, with indications of the houses) including the County town of Northampton, Kettering, Oundle, Wellingborough, Brackley Daventry etc and the Grand Junction Canal& Rivers etc. CONDITION.very good and pleasing. No defects on the map, no foxing or tears etc. The slipcase shows small losses to the blue paper covering, the case is good and sound and still has the title label.
