1797 Vosgien Map- Mappe Monde Dictionnaire Geographique Portatif was a very succesful publication during the second half of the eighteenth century. The author is a'M. Vosgien' who turns out to be a priest from Lorraine(thus'Vosges' Jean-Baptiste Ladvocat. This popular work always contained two fine maps, Europe and the World, from an unknown engraver and was published by Didot in Paris. The map of the World has pleasant clear engraving. In North America we see Canada. Louisiana, and California. Of interest the map shows a version of the legendary Sea of the West. A vast inland sea open to the Pacific, which sometimes appears on maps issued in the 18th century. The map measures 6" by 12" with two folds(as issued) Has later wash hand colouring, and is in only fairly good condition- there is a repair on the reverse ... moreto a 2" narrow sliver of missing paper at the top of the right fold, the left border and blank margin are cropped, there is some discolouration of the paper. Up for auction is an old antique map of the Eastern Hemisphere showing Asia. Europe, Africa, and Australia. Below the map it says, Published by Samuel Walker, Boston. I am not exactly sure what year this map was printed, but I believe this map is from the mid 1800's. The overall condition is fair with good color, but there are some yellowish brown spots that you can see in the pictures. The spots are probably from age, but perhaps it took on some moisture at some point over the years. The paper though is great with a nice cream color and no tears, creases, or other defects to mention. The size of the entire paper is 10.5" x 8.5" and the diameter of the map is 7.25" This map is guaranteed to be an original and not a reproduction. Vintage Map of the World by Claudius Ptolemy Reproduction Antique Print Claudius Ptolemy was born c. AD 90– died c. AD 168. Ptolemy was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician. Astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet(of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology) He lived in Egypt under Roman rule, and is believed to have been born in the town of Ptolemais Hermiou in the Thebaid. This theory, proposed by Theodore Meliteniotes, could be correct, but it is late(ca. 1360) and unsupported. There is no reason to suppose that he ever lived anywhere else than Alexandria, where he died around AD 168. Ptolemy was the author of several scientific treatises. At least three of which were of continuing importance to later Islamic and European science.
