Vintage 12" Diameter Cram's Imperial World Globe on Floor Stand 34" Tall & Map
You are bidding on a vintage. I'm guessing 1970's) Cram's Imperial world Globe. It stands about 34" tall and is mounted on a wood pole that stands about 17.5" tall. The pole is connected to a 10" diameter metal base. The globe measures 12" in diameter and is mounted on it's axis by a rotating plastic gold colored support beams. The globe is in very good condition with all the information clear and clean. The stand shows vintage wear. This is a great vintage globe. It's old. Assujettie aux Observations Astronomiques. Description: A beautiful and impressive map of the world drawn by Jean Janvier in 1782. Depicts the entire world on a double hemisphere projection. North America appears with a fair approximation of accuracy though the western and northwestern regions remain either blank or speculative. Alaska is entirely absent. But the Aleutian archipelago does appear in an embryonic form according to earlier Russian explorations. By contrast the northeast parts of Asia, which had recently been explored by Vitus Bering and Tschirikow, are depicted with a fair approximation of accuracy. Both the apocryphal Terre de Gama and Terre de la Company ... moreappear just northeast of Yedso(Hokkaido) Often called de Gamma Land or Gama, these islands were supposedly discovered in the 17th century by a mysterious figure known as Jean de Gama. Various subsequent navigators claim to have seen this land, but it was left to Bering to finally debunk the myth. In 1729, he sailed for three days looking for Juan de Gamaland but never found it. Though it may be a little more than a mis-mapping of Hokkaido or the Japanese Kuriles, Gama or Compagnie remained on maps for about 50 years following Bering's voyages until the explorations of Cook confirmed the Bering findings. South of the equator the shores of Australia or New Holland are speculatively mapped with a dotted line defining the southern edge of the continent. Van Diemen's Land or Tasmania is attached to the mainland. Polynesia is mapped with numerous islands named, but few are the correct size or in the correct place. Hawaii, which had just been discovered by Cook, here makes its first appearance. What is shown is'Terre de Davis' roughly where Easter Island is today. The map depicts the entire world embraced in two hemispherical projections separated by the Vaugondy firm's distinctive bold cartouche work. This map is a curious work following somewhat on Sanson in that it attempts to express the New World(Americas) within the context of Hellenic tradition. All of the place names in the New World are drawn from ancient Greek mythology with Latin quotations by Plato( Critias and Timaeus) Lucius Annaeus Seneca(Medea, et al) Theopompus, ... moreand Claudius Aelianus annotating the Western Hemisphere. The New World itself is identified as'Atlantis Insula' referring to the lost island civilization first brought to light in Plato's Critias and Timaeus. Vaugondy identifies two cities in the Americas, Machimo or Bellatrix, which is situated on the site of modern day Mexico City or Aztec Tenochtitlan, and Eusebes, located at the site the ancient Inca capital of Cusco, Peru. Machimos and Eusebes where, according to Theopompus, the two greatest cities of Hyperborea. Hyperborea itself was mythic sometimes utopic continent inhabited by giants, gods, centaurs, and other beasts of legend. The inhabitants of Machimos were warlike, dominated their neighbors, and rich in gold and other treasures- a not inaccurate descriptions of the Aztec empire. However, Theopompus also suggests that they were also invulnerable to iron- alas if Vaugondy's placement of Machimos is to be believed history has proven otherwise. By Dezauche, of Guillaume de Lisle and Phillipe Buache's map of 1785. This popular map, which underwent numerous revisions and republications, chronicles the final years of the age of exploration. The present example, though dated 1808, offers a post-Cook pre-Vancouver world view. The northwestern coasts of America, the southeastern coasts Australia, and interiors of Africa, Asia, South America, North America, ... moreand Australia remain largely unknown. The tracks of Captain Cook's three historic voyages, as well as the site if his untimely death in Hawaii, are carefully depicted. Van Diemen's Land, or Tasmania, remains attached to the mainland of Australia. In the American Northwest much is unknown and confused. Vancouver Island does not appear and many of the inlets explored by Cook are wildly oversized– leaving open the possibility that they lead to a Northwest Passage. In Africa Lake Malawi appears in embryonic form and is suggestive of further lakes in the Rift Valley– the discovery of which would not follow until half a century later. One of this map's most interesting and curious elements it its inclusion of'Fousang des Chinois' in what is today British Columbia or Alaska. Fusang or Fousang is a region first documented by the Chinese Buddhist missionary Hui Shen in the 5th century. Hui Shen describes a land some 20,000 Chinese Li(c. 8000 km) east of the China coast. Note ho w Japan. Korea, Taiwan and part of Sakhalin are the same color, denoting Japan's control of the areas. The map measures approx. 41.5 inches x 30.5 inches. The overall condition is great and the colors are still nice. There is of course some minor soiling and small tears here and there but nothing big or very distracting. Please be aware that these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 30 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past.
