Kansas Highway map cerca 1940
Interesting early highway map of Kansas cerca 1940. It also has local period advertising on the back. I couldn't find a date. But the map estimates the population of Oklahoma City as 200,000. In 1940 the population was 204,424 and steadily climbing. If you need more photos. This is a 1893 Railroad map of both Kansas City. Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. It is from the Rand McNally Enlarged Business Atlas issued in 1895. Rand McNally did not update their city maps every year in the Business Atlas, so this genuine dated 1893 map was in the 1895 edition. The map measures 14 X 20 inches. Map shows all transportation lines. Both steam and street railroads, their routes, stations, depots, along with other major points of interest as it was in 1893. But has population figures for 1900, so we must assume it was printed after 1900. Paper shows normal aging and is still supple. Not stiff where it would crack at slightest bump. This is an 1871 engraved map of Kansas. Nebraska, Colorado, Dakota Territory, Wyoming, parts of Montana, Manitoba, Iowa and Missouri. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Normal on most maps this age due to paper content. We have shown in the scans of the map and close ups to get a great idea of the beauty of the gentle hand coloring and detailed engraving. This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. This is for the map you see in the pictures. This is a big map at 11 x 14-1/2 inches from edge to edge. The map is in great condition with no rips or marks in the map part and just slight toning to the page. This is a double or triple sided map and will include the states in the title. Some of the map pages are made together as they have a 2 page map on the inside and a single one on the back of each side of that. You will have to look carefully at the pictures as that is the maps you will get. I have a lot of other maps on from this atlas and will combine shipping. This atlas was already divided into the maps before I bought it so this is how you will get the maps. This is a very hard to find book and not a common atlas. It was engraved and printed by the Matthews-Northrup Works of Buffalo. NY. Major railroads are shown. The map is printed on medium weight paper. Blank on the reverse with the exception of area and population figures(by county) from the 1890 and 1900 Census. Shawnee County had a population in 1890 of 49.000& in 1900 it was 53,000) This printing is NOT part of the encyclopedia text. But was printed by the lithographer when the map itself was prepared.
