1856 Colton Map of Western Germany: Westphalia. Rheinland WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Germany No. 2. Description: A beautiful ... more1855 first edition example of Colton's map of western Germany. Like most of Colton's Europe maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of the World produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Covers the 19th century German provinces of Westphalia, the Rhein Provinces, and numerous smaller regions. In 1848 the March Revolution swept through Europe, in particular Germany. These Revolutions were nationalist pro-German, pan-German, declarations of discontent with the archaic autocratic political structure that dated to the 39 original German states established under the Holy Roman Empire. In 1871, most of the former Confederation states were folded into the newly proclaimed German Empire. The years following the violent suppression of the March Revolution saw a vast middle class exodus from the German states to the United States, leading to'Germantown USA, and popular interest among Americans in the Fatherland. This map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers, rapids, mountain passes, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define national and regional boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. Issued as page no. 13 in volume 2 of Colton's 1856 Atlas of the World. Size: Printed area measures 14 inches high by 17 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Blank on verso. Even overall toning. Shipping: Due to recent increases in United States Postal Service rates we have been forced to increase our shipping rates. Shipping rates are not negotiable. 1861 Johnson Map of Western Germany(Bohemia. Westphalia, Luxemburg) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Johnson's Germany ... moreNo.2. Johnson's Germany No. 3. Description: This is a beautiful example of the western sheets from A. J. Johnson and R. Browning's 1861 Germany series. The map is divided into two separate maps within the same border. The upper map depicts the states of Westphalia. Clevesberg(Rhein Provinces) Hessen Cassel Darmstadt, Brunswick, Schwarzburg, Frankfurt, Waldeck, Reuss, Saxen Coburg Gotha Meiningen, Saxen Altenburg, Weimar and Luxemburg. The lower map focuses on Bavaria, Wurtenburg, Baden, Frankfurt and Hessen Homburg. Depicting the large and awkward range of the German Confederation has always been a challenge for Johnson. This is one of Johnson’s earliest attempts, dividing the region into four separate maps, Germany 1, 2, and 3, and a separate Prussia sheet. Various towns, cities, railways, rivers and several other topographical features are noted with relief shown by hachure. It features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. Published by A. J. Johnson and Browning as plate nos. 75 and 76 in the 1861 edition of Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas. This is the last edition of the Johnson Atlas to bear the'Johnson and Browning' imprint. Subsequent editions reflect Ward's 1862 acquisition Ross C. Browning's shares in the firm. Size: Printed area measures 25 inches high by 17 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Lake Erie Maps& Prints! An Authentic Antique Map: Not a Reproduction! See Our Ebay Store for More! Free Shipping on Purchases of 5 or More Maps and ... morePrints Description: It is an authentic engraved antique Civil War era map with original handcoloring and the desirable decorative border. It is from an 1863 edition of Johnson's Family Atlas(New York: Johnson& Ward. 1863) A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. Johnson's name appears in the title block on the map. Johnson began his career under J.H. Colton, from whom he bought the business, revised the plates with the continued help of Colton and produced his Family Atlas, published yearly throughout the 1860s. In 1867, it won the gold medal in its category at the Paris Exhibition. No doubt one of the great Civil War era atlases of the period, only comparable to the atlases produced by his competitor, S.A. Mitchell. The map is not matted, mounted or framed, being sold as a large elephant folio size double page map with a centerfold as issued. Overall, a very nice example. Size: The map image measures approximately 14 1/2 by 26 inches(each sphere is 13 inches in diameter) on a 18 by 26 1/2" page and a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Good to Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original hand color. Blank on the reverse, and a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pic. There are some light handling smudges around the edges, otherwise the map image area is very clean with nice color on a strong non-brittle page that would frame up nicely, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map being sold. Payment Details: We accept most major credit cards through Paypal and Ebay. Please ask if you have any questions about payment. International and New Bidders are welcomed and encouraged. Payment is expected within 7 days. After which Nonpaying Bidders will be reported to Ebay to recoup our listing fees. 1861 Johnson Map of France. Holland and Bellgium WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Johnson's France. Johnson's Holland ... moreand Belgium. Description: This is a beautiful example of A. J. Johnson and R. Browning's 1861 map of France. Holland(the Netherlands) and Belgium. The map is divided into two separate maps within the same border. The left hand map focuses on France subdivided according to its various departments. An inset map on the lower left corner details Corsica. The French Department system was established on March 4th, 1790 by the National Constituent Assembly to replace the provinces with what the Assembly deemed a more rational structure. They were designed to deliberately break up France's historical regions in an attempt to erase cultural differences and build a more homogeneous nation. Initially there were 83 departments but by 1800 that number increased to roughly 130(only to be reduced again to 86 following the collapse of the French empire) Many of the departments that were created in 1790 remain the administrative districts to this day. The right hand map covers both Holland and Belgium from Friesland to Luxembourg. Inset city plans in the upper left quadrant detail Amsterdam and Brussels. In 1830, the Belgian Revolution led to the secession of Belgium from the United Kingdom of Netherlands and it's subsequently consolidation as the independent Kingdom of Belgium. Though Belgium had successfully attained self-rule, the Netherlands refused to recognize the new country until the 1839 Treaty of London. Various towns, cities, railways, rivers and several other topographical features are noted with relief shown by hachure. It features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. Published by A. J. Johnson and Browning as plate nos. 69 and 70 in the 1861 edition of Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas. This is the last edition of the Johnson Atlas to bear the'Johnson and Browning' imprint. This auction is for the extremely rare and 100% original and authentic antique map of the above region. Cartographer and year. This auction is only for ... morethe map that is pictured in this listing. I cannot stress enough how beautiful this map is up close compared to the photos that you see. Note that the photos do not do the map justice. This is truly an incredible map to behold! This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map business and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson(no clear relation) and date to the mid-1850s, however it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. General Description: 1. Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. Original hand coloring. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. Note that many geographical details have changed since the map was published and were not accurate compared to today's modern maps because things were fully discovered and accurately mapped yet. Map symbols and details include individual towns. Rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands, mountains, forests, roads and other important places as shown on the map in this listing. 2. The map is in great condition considering the age and rarity of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is approximately 17 inches by 14 inches. 3. The map is a 100% original and genuine antique map. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value
