1772 Vaugondy- Diderot Map of Asia and the Northeast Passage WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Nouvelle représentation ... moreDes Côtes Nord et Est de l'Asie: pour servir d'éclaircissement aux Articles du Supplement de L'Encyclopedie qui concernent le passage aux Indes par le Nord. Description: A comparative map of the three conflicting theories on the Northeast Passage. The northeast coasts of Asia, and the American Northwest. The Northeast Passage, much like American’s Northwest Passage, was a long sought after sea route through the Arctic that would save European merchantman the expense of rounding Africa in order to access the trade riches of East Asia. This map, in one of the first obtainable examples of comparative cartography, lays out three theories regarding the Northeast of Asia. Knowledge of this area was, at the time, speculative at best. Shows many unknown island, misshapen representations of Kamtschaka, Japan, Hokkaido(Yesso) Alaska, and the Behring Archipelago. Notes Peking(Beijing) Nanking(Nanjing) Corea(Korea) Jedo(Tokyo)and Nangasaki(Nagasaki) This map is part of the 10 map series prepared by Vaugondy for the Supplement to Diderot’s Encyclopédie, of which this is plate 3. This seminal map series, exploring the mapping of North American and specifically the Northwest Passage was one of the first studies in comparative cartography. Size: Printed area measures 12 inches high by 15 inches wide. Condition: Very good condition. Original centerfold as issued. Original wide clean margins. Platemark visible. Blank on verso. 1679 Scarce Duval Map of Japan
1679 Du Val Map- Japonia Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of the greatest of all French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson, and went on to become the Royal Geographer. He published many atlases in all sizes but one of his great achievements was the two volume'Geographie Universelle' first published in 1660. The charming little maps and engravings from that work are very distinctive. It was also issued in German by the Nuremberg publisher, Johann Hoffman with the translation by Johann Beer under the title'Geographiae Universalis' This attractive map of Japan comes from a 1679 edition of'Geographiae Universalis' The country was still largely unknown to Europeans who relied on reports from Jesuit missionaries. Thus only three of the four main islands are shown with the northern one. Hokkaido, missing. Hokkaido was then ... morea mystery and confused with the'Terre de Jesso' a huge landmass supposedly occupying much of the northern Pacific. The map is extremely attractive with an elegant wreath title in the top left. The map measures 4" by 5" with a centrefold(as issued) Has wash hand colouring, and is in good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 330 years old. Shipping United States- Regular airmail $5.00US. Registered/insured airmail(optional) is an additional US$15.00 for a total of US$20.00. Many of the charts in my collection have never actually been used and so are very clean. They were printed on heavy. Good quality cream-colored paper, folded neatly in half, and stored on board ships in heavy canvas folios. These are not copies or scans or reproductions. They are original charts created by the British Admiralty. The craft of the19th century British Admiralty charts was particularly beautiful and well-detailed. They are. In every sense, works of art. Compare them to modern nautical charts. Which give very little land detail, and you'll see the difference. Many of these charts include images of topographical features and landmarks, coastal elevations, and shoreline diagrams-drawings of how the shoreline would appear to navigators arriving on a ship. These diagrams usually include hills and mountains. Lighthouses, tall buildings, and towers. The charts also often show minute detail of ports and harbors. With streets, palm trees, huts, buildings, docks, jails, railway lines, and churches identified. For this reason many Briti

Operation Olympic Allied Invasion Japan Battle Plan Photograph copy Map Miyazaki
Found in a thrift store recently in picture frame. Appears to be a photographic print of the regiment level battle plan for Operation Olympic. The Allied invasion of Japan for the Miyazaki region. The photo paper watermark reads"This Paper Manufactured by Kodak. From what I could determine this dates the paper from 1972 to early 1990s. The Operation Olympic plan was declassified in 1999. Concerning the operation order that is part of the print, I don't know what to think. I notice there are a lot of misspellings. Again I have no information of the history of this print or its authenticity. Measures 10 3/8 inches by 7 7/8 inches. Tried to take a picture of the watermark but it doesn't show up well. Posted with

PATHFINDER The Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship PATHFINDER at Seattle. Steamer. Length 229.3 feet, beam 39 feet, draft 15.5 feet. Built in 1942 at Lake Washington Shipyards in Houghton. Washington, at a cost of $1,265,448, the Coast and Geodetic Survey’s first million-dollar ... moreship. In Navy service 1942-1947. In Coast and Geodetic Survey service 1946-1971. Sold to General Auto Wrecking Company. Ballard, Washington, for scrap in 1972. Although built for the Coast and Geodetic Survey. It was first commissioned as a fleet survey vessel for the United States Navy on August 31. 1942. This ship is probably the most famous of all Coast and Geodetic Survey ships as it was said that“The road to Tokyo was paved with PATHFINDER charts. The PATHFINDER was the first survey ship to have a chart printing press installed and turned out thousands of charts for fleet units during the war. Captain Junius Jarman of the Coast and Geodetic Survey was instrumental in developing techniques for chart printing in a shipboard environment. Admirals Nimitz and Halsey commended the PATHFINDER for work in the Solomon Islands, Green Islands, Marianas Islands, Philippine Islands, and Okinawa during the war. The ship was a lucky ship and survived over 50 bombing raids although working well in advance of the fleet on many occasions. While anchored on what is now named Pathfinder Reef in the Marianas Islands, the PATHFINDER was closer to Japan than any other U. S. Navy vessel.
