This auction is for an original map of China and Japan from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in very nice condition given its age. It is in its original unrestored condition. The colors(all hand colored) are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very readable. This map does have some staining, especially along the edges with with spot near the Pacific Ocean label. I don't believe they detract from the map. The seam is very much intact and is in very good shape. I have tried to highlight all these main issues in the pictures. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor ... morecondition) but it has already been split up. Date Published: Printed in 1897 by Bibliographisches Institut. Leipzig, Germany Print size: 12 inches by 9 1/2 inches The lithograph has a characteristic patina which is natural for vintage paper. But is in very good condition- it is over 115 years old! The plate was folded inside the book and has the original centrefold, which is more visible on the scanned image than the actual print up for auction. The true detail and colour quality of the lithograph cannot quite be captured by the scan, but gives a good general impression of the real piece. The originator of the print up for auction was Joseph Meyer(May 1796- June 1856) who published the ... morerespected German encyclopedia. Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. Meyer was born in Gotha, Germany and was educated in Frankfurt. He operated very successfully as a publisher, and founded the publishing house, Bibliographisches Institut in Gotha in 1826. It published several editions of the Bible, works of classical literature, atlases, the world in pictures on steel engravings, and the encyclopaedia mentioned above, Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. This map is most interesting in its rendering of the largely unexplored extreme northeast of Asia. Knowledge of this area was, at the time, speculative at best. Vintage collectible child's bomber jacket with the map of Japan. This is a reversible jacket and is in good shape. Only problem I can see is a small separation of the seam under the arm and back of the shoulder on one arm, these are very small and are not totally separated but from use and age there is some separation, the jacket needs to be cleaned, I did not attempt to do this am leaving that up to the owner. The colors are good and the maps are in good shape as can be seen in the pics. This would be an excellent addition to a collection from that era. There is some light smudging on it and a few navigational notations that were written on it in pencil and later erased. Chart shows Tokyo Harbor in extremely close detail with streets. JAPAN ASIA ROAD MAP 1945 WWII War Navy Dept First Edition AMS-1 Military BOMBS
This is an interesting map from the WWII era(May 1945) What is really unusual with this map is the series of hand drawn pencilled Bombs with arrows to their target and some identification pointing to different cities and places. One is identified as KAGOSHIMA JUNE 18 K6. I do not quite understand it all. So please zoom in and look at the pictures. In the top border it reads"FIRST EDITION- AMS-1" On the top left it reads ASIA 1:2,000,000. It is from the estate of a retired US Air Force Msgt. The map is large, measuring about 41 1/2" x 50" high, and would look terrific framed! There are some light stains and discoloration and a small slit in the middle crease, but overall it is in quite nice condition and a very interesting map. Large Document and Map Archive. Navigator Training to Bomb Japan, Incl Biography
From a Vermont estate auction. The military items saved by George F. Pattee of Georgia Vt. Born in 1917, Graduated Bellows Free Academy in 1935. He worked at Central Vt. Railway and was inducted in April 1943. Basic training in Miami Fla. A.M. School at Amarillo Army Air Field. Smart enough to be a navigator he was sent to Jamestown College, where in his english class he wrote the biography that told me all this. He saved all his school books and papers and all his military and navigation training papers. There is a pile of 40 Flight logs from April 1944 to Jan. 1945, the last one being a practice course straight at Tokyo from the Marianas Islands I believe. They list the stars used to navigate, the type of plane(AT-18 and C-60) and the air speed and crew lists. The other 39 logs are from flying around the U.S. The highlight of this collection ... moreare the two restricted Long Range Aeronautical Navigation maps of the Yellow Sea and Japan. The Japan map shows a star plotted course from Mainland China(Hang-Chow) to Nagasaki, and the Yellow Sea map shows the star plotted course from the direction of the Marianas Islands to Tokyo. Two years of searching for these maps on the internet on map sites and archives and I have never found another copy of either available. They have some staining, and have been slightly mouse eaten during their time in storage but are still wonderful. The back of each map has outline of various islands like Okinawa and Io Jima for identification. They were folded up since the war but are currently nicely rolled and protected but they will be refolded for shipping unless you want a separate tube shipped. All the magazines, books, pamphlets, propaganda and newspapers he save are here. The Enosburg Falls newspaper has his name and his brothers in the honor roll section. This includes individual maps of the Pacific Ocean, Japan, Hawaii, and the World, with air distances included. There are some small tears on the margins and some age yellowing.
