This well preserved 267-year-old map is of significant historic interest and will certainly make a fine presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome two part title cartouche. The Latin cartouche features a Neptune figure blowing his shell horn while grasping a piece of coral while animals including a sea monster thrash in the surf: The French cartouche displays a jeweled crown. A parrot, a coiled snake, game, driftwood and a dog: Turning to the map itself. We see a somewhat speculative American interior(although with a surprisingly prescient Missouri River) with Lake Superior shown as"Tracy Lake" as well as an enormous estuary for the Mississippi River. A somewhat ironic title as although he was unsurpassed as a master engraver Homann was not really a true cartographer and his maps were typically close copies of earlier maps, usually French, which he reworked with flamboyant cartouches and vignettes as is the case here. Despite his grandiose title, Homann was not a true cartographer and copied his maps from earlier sources, typically utilising French geographers. This map is a case in point as both the cartography and the fascinating vignettes are derived from the Voyage du sieur Paul Lucas au Levant which was a publishing sensation throughout Europe in the first decades of ... morethe 18th century. Paul Lucas(1664-1737) was appointed by Louis XIV to seek antiquities in the Middle East and his travels in Egypt were among the first European accounts of Upper Egypt as he travelled the Nile all the way to the cataracts. Homann admirably cites Lucas as the source of the map. But it was Homann's talent as a mapmaker(albeit not a geographer) and engraver that brought the material to vivid fruition in this oversize folio map which shows the inimitable Homann style at its most flamboyant. Interestingly, this is one of the few maps that Homann's son Johann Christoph(1703-1730) is credited as drawing(delineavit" although the senior Homann still takes credit for the overall production in the map title. Nearly 300 years old, this exceptionally well-preserved full colour example will make a most impressive presentation if matted and framed and an important addition to any collection relating to Egypt. Copper engraved and hugely detailed map of France with impressive allegorical title cartouche and coats of arms. Original hand colouring. Cartouche has Louis XIV at head. Engraved area approx 57x49cm on a sheet approx 62x54cm. With vertical centrefold as issued. Lovely, heavy paper. Condition is good. The paper feels very healthy; lightly. Evenly toned with no significant foxing, unsightly browning or staining. A few light brown spots but very minor. The centrefold has a narrow trough running down it and the bottom 20cm has been repaired with clear tape on the verso; on the image this area has splitting and rubbing along the right side of the trough. There is a short margin tear next to the ... morecentrefold repaired with the same tape. Map is clean and the colouring remains bright and attractive. Some minor dust soiling in the margins and some bumping and damage on the very edges. Verso very clean with some remnants of mounting tape on the edges; there is some rippling in the paper but only really noticeable on the verso. I’ll post it rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube.
