C1932, original Hawaii Islands map in original unglazed frame A cartograph by RUTH TAYLOR WHITE illustrated with amusing cartoons Size: 20 3/4" x 16 1/4" inc. frame. 19 1/2" x 14 3/4" without frame Condition: Good. This seems never to have been glazed so surface is slightly grubby. There is a water stain 1" wide down the R H side and a surface abrasion on the L H side of the title cartouche. Plus several other small chip and scratches.

There is a 1914 on the title page. Dodd. Mead and Company, publishers. Hardcover, NO dustjacket, approx. 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" 241 pages. This book is NOT a former library copy. Please review the photos carefully. Cover has bumped. Worn corners and some edge wear. Cover surfaces have some soil, light stains and scuffing/scratching, including some wear to the illustration and title on the front cover. Spine is rounded. Titles on the spine are worn off. Page corners are bumped. Page surfaces have occasional"not smooth" areas from page thumbing. A couple of pages have a lightly rough top edge. There is a book-length separation between a couple of pages but ... morenothing is loose because of it. A previous owner's name is written on the front free endpaper. Description: This extraordinary production is Commodore Wilkes' 1841 U.S. Exploring Expedition map of the island of Hawaii. An incredibly important work. This is, according to Fitzpatrick, the'first geometrically constructed map of any significant portion of Hawaii. Wilkes' map covers the vicinity of the volcanoes Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Kilauea as well as the Hawaiian shoreline roughly between Laupahoehoe and Kahaualea, including Hilo Bay and city. Topography is rendered by hachure. Wilkes' map presents an extremely detailed view of the region- the most impressive yet achieved. The ... morebasic outline of this map is based on observations taken personally by Wilkes on the summit of the lesser volcanic peak of Puuluhulu(identified here) These were supplemented with secondary observations, also taken by Wilkes, at Mauna Loa, Kilauea, Mauna Kea, and Hilo. The map is not however, without flaws, among which are his misplacement of Kilauea by some 8 miles and Hilo itself by 4 miles. These errors lead to a general distortion of the coastline and a slightly inaccurate presentation of the relative locations of the various volcanoes. Nonetheless, Wilkes's map of southeastern Hawaii was the best map of that region produced until the late 19th century and of monumental importance to the mapping of Hawaii. This region of Hawaii was the focus of Wilkes' most intense scientific scrutiny- hence this detailed map was produced to accompany the official expedition report. Imagining himself a later day Baron von Humboldt, Wilkes planned to achieve lasting scientific fame for climbing Mauna Loa, Hawaii's largest volcano, and conducting various scientific experiments at the summit and in the caldera. Vintage 1940's. Women's map of Hawaii print fabric wrap skirt, with cloth tag label"Paradise HAWAII MADE IN HONOLULU" Feels nice quality, cotton. Maintains good unfaded color. Colors: Red background. Maps state, cities, and island names all in gold. Boats have cream white sails. Aqua-green palm/coconut trees. Blue figures& flowers. There is one Sailor figure wearing a white uniform& waving signal flags. To the left of this Sailor is Pearl Harbor. Black accent color. Photos 5& 6 show the reverse side of fabric: The inside of skirt looks almost as good as the top side of fabric. One piece of fabric measuring approximately 60" X 34" Adjustable size. Two slightly discolored white cotton ties, measuring 12" Three 6 1/2" seams at waist. Neatly sewn, finished edges, completely intact.
