1776 Salmon Map- Golfe du Mexique Thomas Salmon(1679- 1767) was an early travel and historical writer and was extremely successful despite his relatively humble upbringing. Much of his success was probably due to the fact that he experienced much of what he wrote about and had travelled throughout Europe as well as residing in the East Indies for some time. He also travelled with Commodore Anson on his piratical voyage around the world. His best known works are'A New Geographical& Historical Grammar' first issued 1749 but many editions) and'The Universal Traveller' 1752) These works were translated into French as was'Description Generale de L'Univers' with 28 maps in 1776. This attractive map is one of the examples from this publication. From the 1776 edition. Central America, and the Gulf of Mexico shows a wide area from the Texas/Mexico Gulf Coast in the west to Barbados and the mouth of the Orinoco in the east. In the north, the whole of the Florida peninsula appears and the map names Louisiana. The map also names Mexico or New Spain, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Venezuela. Bowen's map covers most of the modern day United States from the Rio Grande to the Pacific and from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico. River systems are well delineated and forests and topography and rendered in profile. Numerous American Indian nations. As well as colonial settlements, fortifications, and trading posts are noted throughout. As Bowen notes in a curios annotation appearing in the lower left quadrant, this map is essentially a remake ... moreof Bellin's map of 1744 from a highly Anglocentric perspective. Unlike Bellin's map, here there are no political borders; instead, what is represented is the vast potential of British of British sovereignty in America from the Rio Grande to the Atlantic and the Great Lakes to Florida- mostly through expansion into and cooption of American Indian lands, which here are addressed thoroughly. The escalating tensions between the relatively few French settlers in the Mississippi and the populous Atlantic colonies of the British would soon lead to increasing encroachment on overlapping claims and, eventually, in 1754, the French and Indian War. Though a significant advancement over many previous maps, the present examples is not without errors. Two in particular bear note and are derived directly from the Bellin/ Charlevoix maps. These include Charlevoix's four fictional islands in Lake Superior- this being among the first British maps to present them- and the distended northerly mapping of the Rio Grande copied from Bellin, who based his map on De L'Isle. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Antique maps of Florida and Georgia from an atlas published in the late 19th Century. These US state maps are printed back to back. So only one can be displayed at a time. Condition: Good. Lots of age toning around the margins. Which just adds to the appeal of the old map. The paper is fairly fragile, so map page will need to be protected from less than careful handling. Note: the page was just a bit too big for the scanner, so part of the margin area is not shown. The right margin of the Georgia map is the same size as the left. The Florida map was printed a bit crooked on the paper(as was common in the 19th century) but this will not show when it is framed.
