Artists and Engravers: Following the long period of Dutch domination. The Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. Secretary of War, more than 154 years ago. Florida had joined the Union barely 10 years before this map was drawn and there's sparse settlement in the state south of Tampa. But the map has wonderful detail of the military roads and forts, Indian trails and villages, territorial boundaries, along with vegetation and topography. It traces the routes of various military expeditions. Such as those by Gen. Eustis, Col. Taylor, Major Childs, and Capt. Wright. The third Seminole War, also called the"Bowlegs War, had just begun when this map was originally issued, and the center of the Florida peninsula was largely ... moreunexplored. The photo above shows the map opened up. It measures 23" x 18" and is lithographed in full printed color. For sale is a great old fishing map of the Escambia river in and around Pensacola. Florida. The map was made by hand and copied to be given out at bait shops around the Escambia county area. The map is stamped from the Brownsville Tackle shop which is a town that lays next to Pensacola near the bay. There is a lot of history and some great names of favorite fishing holes. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age. Printed on a strong bright cotton rag page, blank on the reverse with a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics. There is some light backprinting and one soft crease, otherwise it is very clean, see the detailed pics for more on condition. Overall, it is a very nice example difficult to find in this condition, with strong handcoloring that would frame up nicely. The pics are of the actual map.
