Beautifully produced, huge, very detailed map covering Russia, Poland and Hungary at the outbreak of the First World War, dissected into 25 sections, and mounted on cloth/ linen. The map is in near fine condition with minor signs of wear. It is firmly bound into purple boards. The boards are in very decent shape with some fading and marks. The cloth on the spine has dulled. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured hundreds of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic events. However its success ... morewas also due to its many woodcut maps, groundbreaking in their day but which later came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1580s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. This map is truely a rare historical gem dating back to 1628 it is almsot 400 years old. Found in a famous antiquities shop in the south of france by a prominent cartography collector the map was brought back to the united states and appraised between 2500 and 4000 it was to be auctioned at christies. However, below the border of the map there some small tearing occured while being vacuum sealed to protect the document. The small tearing at the bottom is the only reason this beautiful pristine is being sold for so little. I obtained the map at the estate sale of the collector who obtained the map in france.
