China& Eastern Russia with a very early view of the NW coast of America- one of the first maps to depict this region- by Gerard Mercator was published by Joducus Hondius in the 1623 Latin edition of Mercators Atlas. A beautifully ornate map in a style highly popular in the 16th and early 17th centuries. To the left of the map is the ... moreimage of a man of Central Asia and another of an Arctic Hunter. Possibly an Eskimo. The rest of the map is full of detail both real and myth, some of which is no doubt borrowed from the writings of Marco Polo considered at the time one of the foremost expert on China and Central Asia. Overlooked by some experts is the inclusion of the NW Coastline of America important as it would be 150 years before this region was thoroughly mapped by Capt. James Cook in the 1770's. An important map showing the Great Wall of China. Korea as an Island, a very early example of the the Northwest Coast of America, naming Cape de Fortuna and the Straits of Anian. Shown also is an incomplete Nova Zembla and a host of other details. Extends west to include the Black Sea and Russia, but the primary focus of the map is Tartaria, Central Asia and Asiatic Russia. Decorative vignettes in include a nomadic tribe, tents and livestock. An early map of the region and certainly one of the most decorative of the genre. 1799 ORIGINAL Large Map of Asia, New Holland, Australia, China
Original uncolored engraving as issued. Blank on verso. Engraved by John Lodge. Based upon the cartography of Arrowsmith. Image area is 8.75" wide x 11.0" high. Interesting and detailed map extending from the Red Sea to Kamtchatka. Australia is still"New Holland" with a large New South Wales. The southern coast is somewhat vague but it's one of the earliest maps to show Van Dieman Land separated by the Bass Strait. Indonesia is well detailed with the"Latest Astronomical Obsevations" noted. Beautifully executed. Will frame nicely. Overall good condition with mild ageing. Low starting bid with no reserve. This auction is for a very detailed and colorful 1936 map of Nanjing. China. This map is in great condition with some original crease lines. The map measures 22' inches wide and 29 7/8' inches long. This map is an extensive and comprehensive look at small town roads and waterways. It is written in all Chinese. There are no holes or tares. There is one insignificant rolled edge on the bottem left hand corner form being folded numerous times. A nice display peice with great color and detail. Rigobert Bonne(1729-1795) was the Royal Hydrogapher. Making maps for the King of France succeeding Nicolas Bellin in 1773. Bonne's name appears in the title area of the map as M. Bonne. Ingenieur Hydrographer de la Marine. The map is not mounted nor matted. Being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 8 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches(22x32cm)on ... morea 10 by 14" page(25x35cm) with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition for its age. Printed on a strong bright cotton rag page, blank on the reverse with a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics. Other than a couple of very light smudges or occasional spots typical of an old map, it is very clean, see the detailed pics for more on condition. Overall, it is a very nice example difficult to find in this condition, with strong handcoloring that would frame up nicely. The pics are of the actual map.
