From which this map comes, was published in Paris in 1812 and was one of the best and most up-to-date atlases of the early-19th century. It used charming vignette scenes in the title, a practice to be copied by other French mapmakers and the John Tallis company in England. Malte-Brun, a Danish geographer and publisher who settled in Paris, used French engineer and geographer Alexandre Lapie, as well as engravers Jean-Baptiste Tardieu and Jean-Baptiste Chamouin, in the creation of his atlas. Korea(Coree) Japan, and Taiwan(Formose) The map covers from the Gobi Desert southwards as far as Hainan and eastwards, to include Formosa, Korea, and Japan. Apparently based on a Chinese atlas, this map divides China into its various provinces, identifying countless cities throughout. Korea and Japan are not divided according to provinces, but numerous cities are noted. Formosa or Taiwan is divided along its central mountainous axis with areas in red on the west coast suggesting Chinese influences while the green tinted east coast hints at Japanese influence. 1867 British Admirality Map , the Java Sea & Passages to China, Rare Ships Map
This lot offers the map that measures 39 x 27 inches. The legend shows that it was compiled from information from the British and Dutch government surveys of 1867. The map shows the southern passages to China and the Sunda Straight. The very bottom of the map shows that it was published in London at the Admirality. Also. Along the bottom it shows dates that corrections were made. The last of these is dated October of 1877. I believe that was the actual print date of this map. There is a stamp with the name B. Falconer Company of Hong Kong. I believe that would be the company that owned the map and carried it on its shipping vessel. The map is made of a somewhat thick material. I believe it is parchment. The entire border of the map has a fold of canvas sewn onto it. This has protected the edges from tearing. The map has been rolled up somewhat ... moreloosely for more than 100 years and it no longer lays flat. There are some stains probably caused by water, which are mostly confined to the lower part of the map. There is one spot in the lower left hand corner that has a crack, this can be seen on the photo. The upper portion of the map; which shows Sumatra, Borneo, and the China Sea, is remarkably clean and in good condition. Please see the close-up photos for more details. Watson Limited 1889 This wonderful travel guide to Canton(Guangzhou) was published in Hong Kong and Canton in 1889 and it is a fourth edition. Several editions of the guide were published during the 1880’s and 1890’s and all of them are quite scarce and seldom come to the market. The guide measures 14 x 21 cm approximately and it is complete. The book comes in the original printed wraps and unfortunately the front cover is detached. The guide paginates with forty two pages of text and is illustrated. The map has two splits at folds. There is a small tear on page five and a few letters of text are impacted. John Glasgow Kerr(1824– 1901) was a Presbyterian medical missionary to China with the American Presbyterian Mission. Born in Duncansville. Ohio, Kerr graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He went to China as a medical missionary and arrived at Guangzhou in 1854. He soon took over the Ophthalmic Hospital in Canton run by Peter Parker, the Guangzhou Boji Hospital(The Canton Hospital) He was there for 47 years and treated almost 1 million patients. He performed 480,000 surgical operations including 1300 urinary calculus. In 1870 he trained 260 Chinese medicals. Kerr pioneered mental health care in China. In 1898 he opened the Canton Refuge for the Insane, the first mental hospital in China, where he served until his death. In 1887 he became the first president of the Medical Missionary Association of China.during his lifetime Kerr translated 34 volumes of Materia Medica into Chinese and authored other medical books.
