This is a 1971-72 Illinois and Metropolitan Chicago road map from Sun Oil Company(Sun oco and D X) The map is copyright 1971 from Diversified Map Corp. o f St. Louis. The map also includes tour suggestions in Illi nois and historical landmarks. There are also insert maps of Davenport. Moline, Rock Island, Decatur, Peoria, Rockford, Saint Louis, East Saint Louis and Springfield. The back of the map advertises the yellow areas of the U.S. where Sunoco gas is available and blue areas where DX gas is available. Sunoco and DX credit c ards are advertised and are honored by dealers at the signs shown on the map of Illinois. The Sunoco-selected motels are also advertised. This map does show some soil and wear. This is a Chicago Elevated Railroads Map and History pamphlet published in 1921. It is fascinating to read this historical information about the beginnings of the elevated railroads. The map is. Of course, intriguing because it is the way Chicago looked 92 years ago. It measures 3 x 7 inches closed and 7 x 13 inches open. Street Map of City of Chicago - 115 Yr. Old 1898 Rand, McNally & Co. map
This is a huge vintage Street Map of the City of Chicago. It was created by the Rand. McNally& Co. of Chicago in 1898. It is described as a Street Number Guide Map of the Principal Part of CHICAGO. A beautiful map like this has two small wrinkles due to its age and it will need the addition of professional framer's tape to secure the tear at its top edge and a small triangle fold at a fold that can corrected when framing it professionally. We have shown this map in five scans as my scanner will Not take a scan of this huge fully opened map. The map has three horizontal folds and a single vertical fold. The first scan is of the Title of The Map page section, the second is also close to that first scanned area and is at the top of the page where there is a tear from the top edge that runs into the map, the third scan is of the folded-up ... moremap with the top edge scanning the area where the focused tear of the second scan happened, the fourth scan was taken along the side of the map's edge slightly down from the top where a small triangular section needs a repair, and for the fifth scan of the folded-up map we left the small triangular section with the facing streets side out to show what needs some professional framer's tape. The map's length is about 28 inches with margins included, while its width is about 20.5 inches with its margins included. The map is in 3 colors. When the eight rectangular areas are properly folded-up the whole map becomes a smaller 8.5 x 10.5 inch rectangular size that is excellent for shipping. It is a super flimsy, vintage street map of City of Chicago. This map should make an excellent gift for the collector. Or possibly an outstanding office map when framed.

Actual map size is 40 by 48 inches and it rolls up and down fine. One corner of the top of the map needs to be reglued or reconnected to the wood rod. There is also a crease going through the center of the map and a tiny spot on the right side outside edge where the map broke loosed from the backing This was used above a black board and hung on the metal hooks above. Interesting City map of Baltimore.Chicago,Detroit and St.Louis. Map measures 10 X 13.5 inches. Printed on thin paper. Has been expertly repaired with mending tissue. The map is not dated. But they came out of a loose leaf binder that has a copyright date of 1919, see above scan of copyright date. Map will come carefully rolled in kraft paper and inside a strong pvc mailing tube. We do not mail flat due to maps being folded. Shoved through mail slots and arriving in terrible condition. We like to get maps to our customers in the same condition as they left. Also the cover has edge and corner wear but the map is in very good to near mint condition. I don’t think it was ever opened before me. The back cover has the same type of creasing as the front cover and has two pictorial advertisements on the back, see photo. This is an 1897 map of Chicago. The map measures 17.5 X 25 inches. Printed and engraved by the George Cram Co. Issued in the Standard American Railway Atlas. We have shown the scans of the map and a close up to get a great idea of the beauty and workmanship that went into the detailed wax engraving. Would look fantastic framed under glass. Augustus Mitchell click image to enlarge This beautifully hand coloured original antique city plan was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the 1870 edition of his large New General Atlas- dated at the foot of the map. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers ... moreof maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. Vances name is removed from the Mitchell edition. Cartographer: Samuel Augustus Mitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's ... moreUniversal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps. Many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior, entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s when most of the copyrights were again sold and the Mitchell firm closed its doors for the final time.
