1838 Antique Celestial Astronomy Print Scientific Vintage Engraving Map
Up for auction is an old antique engraved print of astronomical devices and instruments from 1838. The print is titled. Tableau Analitique Des Differenes Systemes Du Monde Par Delamarche Ingenieur Mecamiciene pour les Globes et Spheres, 1838. It shows celestial and terrestrial globes, an armillary, the moon, and other astronomical charts, systems, and observations. Delamarche was a highly regarded mapmaker of this period. It really is quite an interesting print. It is printed on thick paper with clear engravings. The condition is good for its age with normal tanning and roughness due to age. There are several stains, most of them small, that I have tried to capture in the pictures. The most significant stain is the dark drop of what was probably ink on the left corner. There are no wrinkles other than a fold line done the middle. The corners ... moreare rounded, but it appears as if that was the original design. The print has been folded down the middle and then rolled up, and that is how I will ship it. This print is not framed, even though it might look like it in some of the pictures. I do not have a scanner, so I put a large piece of glass over the top to keep it flat so I could photograph it. The print is a good size, measuring approximately 18" x 13" from the edge of the paper to the other edge. This map is guaranteed to be an original and not a reproduction. Up for bids is a modern 1956 unframed reprint by Fredrick's Fine Art of the celestial chart Solis Circa Orbem Terrarum Spiralis Revolutio(The Apparent Spiral Revolution of the Sun Around the Earth) by Andreas Cellarius first published in 1660 by Jan Jansson. It depicts. According to pre-Copernican belief, the apparent path of the sun as it revolves around the Earth, which through the year was thought to form a spiral pattern. It would pass from one climate zone to another, thus regulating the seasons. The Earth is shown on an axis far more pronounced than the 23.5 degrees that was later ascertained. This rather severe tilt makes the zodiacal band run almost vertically through the image. According to Classical astronomy, championed by Aristotle and Ptolemy, the universe was a geocentric system, in which the Sun, stars, and the planets ... morerevolved around the Earth. The present image was engraved during the great era of Dutch map-making, a period that saw perfection in the art of representing scientific ideas in graphic form by means of engraving. The print is on heavy matte paper. Measures 21" wide x 18" tall& has been folded into quarters but the horizontal fold is less pronounced. It is in excellent condition, the only real condition issue is that 3 holes have been punched along the left margin. It will be shipped folded in half between two pieces of heavy cardboard inserted in a large padded envelope. Rare Antique W.G. Evans Hand-Colored Celestial Map 1856 Constellations
This 157-year-old hand-colored map was engraved by W.G. Evans for Burritt's Atlas for the Geography of the Heavens. Published in 1856. This is plate VII, depicting the constellations of the southern hemisphere. The decorative illustrations of the constellations are wonderful and the orchid pink coloring adds a beautiful touch. Even the overall foxing only adds to the map's appeal. It measures approximately 14&1/4" x 16&1/4" The paper is soft and flexible. So this will ship rolled in a heavy-duty mailing tube. Please note that because it has been stored rolled, I had to place dominoes on the edges to hold it flat to photograph it. As shown, I moved the dominoes so that between the first and second photos of the entire map, you can see the map in its entirety.
