Displaying plenty of sharp detail. Attractive colors, and good margins for framing. My photos really do not do this fine map justice! The page is about 12 1/2 by 17 inches in size. The reverse is blank. The map has a vertical center fold. As published. The map shows California from San Francisco to San Diego and includes inset maps of Los Angeles. San Diego, and Yosemite National Park. Condition is very good with slight age toning at the edges and very minor damp staining at a couple of corners that intrudes less than 1/4 inch into the blank margin. Well away from the engraved area of the map. High bidder to pay $3.50 toward shipping. International would be additional. Includes California as"New Albion" with a large region around Vancover island labelled"New Georgia" along with other geographical curiosities of the era. Many engraved annotations about Indian villages and tribes, as well as noting the"most noerthern border of the Mississippi river" In near VG mostly clean condition. Some light offsetting and very light scattered foxing. Otherwise map remains clean and quite well-preserved overall. Still attractive and pleasing. Original fold line as issued. Someone long ago has hand drawn an erasable pencil line across the western regions and written"1819" above it, indicating ... morea early boundary apparently related to Mexico. Purchased in 1999 from Dumont Maps in Santa Fe. NM, here is the original description that came with the map: Map of Oregon and Upper California from Surveys of John Charles Fremont and other Authorities- Preuss 1850. 19.5"x16.5" This is the smaller version of Fremont's remendously influential map of the area from Great Salt Lake to San Diego. It is apparently printed from a portion of the plate used for the larger map. And was probably issued to meet the demand for maps following the discovery of gold in California. The name notwithstanding, Oregon is not shown, but the map does show all of the Great Basin and routes to the diggings. There is much good information on the west as it was known, but one glaring error places a range of mountainseast-west across the Great Basin. These nonexistent mountains appeared on commercial ... moremaps for years afterward. Folded as issued, else clean and bright.
