1950's VINTAGE SOUVENIR KITCHEN TOWEL STATE MAP CALIFORNIA 8.99
This vintage 1950's souvenir State of California map towel has bright reds. Royal blues and greens. It is from my Aunt's estate(the second and last CA souvenir towel) and has been packed away for years. I believe she may have gotten it on our trip to the Rose Bowl Parade, the year Mamie and President Eisenhower were in it. It has been gently used but I could find no tears, stains or other imperfections. It is 100% cotton(or maybe linen) and measures 24 by 16 inches. It shows California state highlights such as Mt. Shasta. Many cities, Mt Palomar, Lake Tahoe, Santa Catalina Island. It also shows part of Nevada. There are bold colorful graphics of cowboys, lady skiers, race horses, fishermen as well as a cute south of the border scene with a man in a sombrero and poncho, a cactus; palm trees; a donkey and bucking bronco with a rider. ... moreThis would be great framed and hung for a wall hanging or used in a craft.

California Mexico 1599 Ruscelli engraved map rare NVEVA HISPANIA TABVLA NOVA(Mexico/ Central America/ California) Issued Venice. 1561] 1599 by Ruscelli& Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1561 plate of 1598. Italian text on verso. A landmark map. Enlarged from Gastaldis 1548 map, and one of the most influential of this region in the 16th century. One of the earliest obtainable separately printed maps of the southern part of America. Here in it's most decorative state with mythical islands. This scarce late issue used the 1561-74 plate(a close examination of minute details reveals this) But for this 1598-99 issues by Sessa heirs(identical plate/map for both editions, just different title page dates) the engraver has added a large sailing ship, more place names in the interior, ... morea long river into central Mexico, and numerous mythical islands in the Pacific ocean(some of which are named- Rocca Parrida" La Anub" S. Tonias" Jada" and a series of islands which are unnamed) The plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and thus this map has no further appearances or printings. A survey of the Map Price Record reveals that Ruscelli maps from the 1598-99 printing are offered much less frequently than earlier printings(1561. 1562& 1574) at a ratio of approx. 1 later printing for every 5 offered from earlier editions. This would appear to indicate the later edition may have been printed in smaller numbers and due to increasing market competition, had a smaller distribution. Clean impression. Of course, at this time The Golden Gate and Oakland Bay Bridges have yet to be built. Street and building indexes surround the map proper. Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. In New Mexico and Arizona Johnson has removed the latitudinal border between New Mexico and Arizona that he included in the 1860 edition of his atlas. Description: The scarcest and most historically significant of A. J. Johnson’s southwest series. This is the 1860 first edition of A. J. Johnson and Ross C. Browning’s map of California. Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to modern day Colorado. Though later editions of the Johnson atlas are common, the 1860 edition, which was Johnson’s first, had the smallest print run of the entire series and for all intent and purposes, unobtainable. Unlike most maps in the 1860 Johnson atlas, this map was a unique production and therefore not based upon the earlier atlas maps ... moreof J. H. Colton. Rather, it seems that Johnson derived this map by dissecting the plates of his 1859 wall map of North America and then incorporating, oftentimes superimposing, more contemporary detail. Such is the case in the Nevada– Utah territory, where both territories are labeled Utah, despite being split in half along longitude 113 and the miss-mapped Sevier/ Santa Clara River. Johnson revised this curious border to strictly adhere longitude 116 in the subsequent 1861 edition of this map. Eastern Utah here extends well into modern day Colorado incorporating Middle Park, but not North Park and South Park, within its borders. The Colorado Gold Region, which was first discovered in 1858, is well labeled. Subsequent editions of this map, published in 1861 shortly after the incorporation of Colorado, revise this border to include the territory. Plano del Puerto de San Blas en Las Costas del Estado de Xalisco. Description: This is an exceptionally rare and early map of San Diego Bay. California, and San Blas, Mexico, published in 1825 by order of Senor Don Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of the Republic of Mexico. Essentially two maps on a single sheet, this map highlights the starting point(San Blas) an ending point(San Diego) of the Spanish supply route to southern California. The upper map focuses on San Diego Bay, covering the region from Puerto Falso(Mission Harbor) to Punta de Arena. The fortress of San Diego(the Presidio) the Ranchera de Choyas, the Poblacion ... moreof San Diego(Mission of San Diego) and a ranch and Indian village in the southwestern part of the bay, among other sites, are all noted. The lower map, focusing on San Blas details the Bay from the Rio de Santiago to the village of San Blas, today a small fishing village near Puerto Vallarta. Both maps offer numerous depth soundings, references to shoals, reefs, and other undersea dangers, and notes on anchorage. The armorial crest of Mexico appears in the lower left quadrant. Though ostensibly similar to the map of the same regions published by Perouse in his 1797 atlas, this is in truth a different map with the apparent similarity stemming from the fact that both maps are drawn from the same source– the pioneering cartography of Juan Pantoja y Arrianga. Pantoja was the navigator and cartographer of the Frigate Princesa, which was commissioned, in 1782 to supply Spain’s few colonial outposts along the remote California coastline. The Princesa sailed from the harbor of San Blas to San Diego where, during a seven week break, Pantoja produced the first accurate survey of San Diego Bay. Sanson/ Jaillot This is a wonderful example of Jaillot's map of North America during colonial times based on Sanson's original map(1656) This map displays a number of geographical features and lack thereof that make this map an exceptional example North American history. One most notable geographical feature is the famous depiction of California as an island. Dotted along its coast are names of places still current in California today such as Mendocino. Monterey, Francisco, S. Barbara, and S. Diego among others. The space above California has been left blank since north-western Canada and Alaska had yet to have been discovered by Europeans. In the north central part of the ... moremap lays Buttons Bay which is actually a very small bay within Hudson Bay. In this map however, it is depicted as a large open ended channel of water leading into an empty space on the map. This hinted at a possible shortcut to the Pacific known as the Northwest Passage. Many sailors and explorers lost their lives in search of such a route. One last geographic feature worth noting is the depiction of the Great Lakes. All of the lakes are misshapen, Superior and Michigan are left open ended, Michigan is shown to lay horizontally, Huron is shown to be much larger than it really is, Ontario is fed by a separate river, Erie is completely landlocked, and in there is a sixth lake named Lac Nissipirinien that does not exist. A decorative cartouche adorns the map with dedication to Le Dauphin, and his coat of arms in top. Featured below are eight distance scales within another cartouche. Printed 1708 We are pleased to offer this scarce original celestial chart(Van der Krogt# HM29.1.2. Burden# 347) compiled by(1596-1665) for his magnificent star atlas. Widely regarded as the ne plus ultra of celestial mapping from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. Of the eight constellation plates that appeared in the atlas. This presentation of southern constellations is arguably the most sought-after owing to its planisphere underlay featuring an insular California. Nick Kanas in his fine study of celestial charts Star Maps- History Artistry and Cartography observes that the 41.6 cm diameter planisphere provides an oblique view of the constellations ... morewhich are externally oriented. Thus"below" the constellations we find the terrestrial map extending from much of what is now the United States(including that famous Island of California! all of Central and South America and a large"Terra Australis Incognita" in the south polar region. The constellations themselves are derived from the work of the Dutch astronomer(1552-1622) and the chart includes his unique creations such as Pavo the Peacock. The Toucan, Grus the Crane, the Chamaeleon, Triangulum Australe(Southern Triangle) Apis Indica(Bird of Paradise) Indus the Indian, Musca the Bee and Hydra the small water snake. The classical constellation figures are of course present as well along with the zodiac figures of Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and parts of Virgo and Pisces on the periphery of the sphere. Angels and putti present the chart title in two banners in the upper corners while two"Titan" figures support the sphere as learned astronomers and scholars look on in the vignettes in the lower corners. 5 Day Auction This is a rare and special find. A miniature, 4.5" x 6" of Ruth Taylor's 1945 Wine Map of California. It appears the California Wine Advisory Board in San Francisco printed this as the front of small brochures for wine tastings that clubs and organizations put on. This one was the Junior Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Anaheim, California. The date is October 19, 1957. Inside there is a page on how to do wine tasting properly; A Brief Guide to Wine Types and Uses; and The Wines from Concannon Vineyard of Livermore, CA. used for this tasting event. As a bonus to this auction, I am including a vintage brochure for the Concannon Vineyard of Livermore, California. There is no date on this brochure, but since I found these two together, I'm sure it, too, is from the 1950's. I have researched the large. ... more40" x 30" original map by Ruth Taylor in 1945. It is hard to find and sells from $1,400 to $3,000. I have not found a miniature like this, as these were probably not kept by most attendees to the wine tasting. It is in pristine condition with no rips. Tears, writing or stains. The bottom right corner is a little soft, that's the only flaw-though slight- I can find. The colors are bright and vivid.
