Four of the routes roughly follow the routes of the first 4 Transcontinental Railroads that would be built over the next 3 years. Some of the Territories at the time were oddly shaped. UTAH was larger than today encroaching on modern NEVADA and WYOMING while southern NEVADA where Las Vegas is today was part of the ARIZONA TERRITORY at the time. The DAKOTA TERRITORY was HUGE at the time involving all of North and South Dakota and nearly all of modern Wyoming. Oklahoma was known as the INDIAN TERRITORY at the time. The atlas was"Prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith. A.M. and published by The Century Company, New York. The highly prized maps in this atlas were engraved by The Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, NY. The maps from The Century Atlas are acknowledged to be among the finest of the late 19th century. Published in Rome illustrates the imagined new world of early explorers. California is shown as an island. The open ended Great Lakes are imaginatively drawn much further west than they actually lie. The mythical Quivera is shown in modern day Texas. A nonexistant lake feeds the Rio Norte and the Northwest is entirely absent. Indian tribal territories are noted on this hand colored.
