In 1962, was a major event for a boy 9 years of age. My grandparents subscribed to this paper, so I even remember this! Filled with pics of the event. JFK checking in, and the last page of the insert, the ticker tape parade in NYC pic. It was fun to relive this, but gotta try to move it on to you Nasa and space related items collectors out there. It is in decent condition, still fairly sturdy and no dry rot. I would even say it has not very yellowed, the color is even all around, no tanning. There is a bit of a fold in the middle, but not heavily creased anywhere. I will ship this in a tube to keep that feature intact.

Boston Fire Department Memorial Button 1898 Merrimac Street Fire 6 FF's Killed
A very scarce Memorial Button issued to commemorate the deaths of six Boston Firefighters that gave their lives fighting the Merrimac Street Fire of February 5. 1898. To quote the Boston Fire Historical Society: The fire took place in the George Bent Bedding Company building at 116-126 Merrimac Street. Opposite Lancaster Street, in the North Station& Haymarket sections of downtown Boston. The building was owned by the Union Baptist Church. A fire alarm was received at 3:58AM from Box 412, located at Causeway and Lowell Streets, a short distance away. Upon arrival of the first fire companies, smoke and fire were showing from the five-story building, which measured 125 feet wide and 75 feet deep. The building contained a large quantity of bedding materials, fabrics, cotton, wood, and other materials which tended to absorb water and added ... moreto the weight on the upper floors of the building. Upon his arrival at the fire, Assistant Chief William Cheswell ordered a second alarm. He ordered hose lines to be advanced via interior staircases and from the outside over ground ladders. A third alarm was ordered by Chief Cheswell at 4:16AM. Responding on the Second Alarm was District Chief John Egan of District 3. Along with Engine and Ladder Companies, including Engine 7. Upon arrival, Engine 7 was ordered to advance a line to the fourth floor. Chief Egan assumed command of the interior firefighting on the fourth floor. Among the responding Engine Companies on the Third Alarm was Engine 39. Upon arrival, Engine 39 was ordered to advance a line over Ladder 8 to the fourth floor. At approximately 5:15AM, with the fire nearly under control, the roof collapsed into the fifth floor, and all lower floors collapsed as well. Rescue operations commenced immediately, but were hampered in the darkness by heavy burning timbers, snow and building contents. Many department members were trapped in the rubble. Here's an excerpt: It is with deep regret that the Fire Commissioner announces the death. On October 25, 1949 of District Chief Daniel Crowley of District 5 as of the result of inhalation of smoke during fire at box 1461. Numerous"HIGH COMMENDATIONS" At 9:22 PM April 22. 1951 the department responded to an alarm from box 2163 for a fire in the dwelling house at 48 Munroe St. Roxbury. The fire had made considerable headway before the arrival of the department, evidently due to a delay in sounding of the alarm. A number of children were trapped in the building, requiring immediate and heroic action on the part of members of this department to save their lives. Offered is an original. Vintage 1930’s-1960’s carved and painted Portsmouth Ship banner for a carved American Eagle, manufactured by THE ARTISTIC CARVING CO. of Boston. Massachusetts. This furled patriotic banner. In good old paint, measures approx. 24 inches in length. The flag staff is approx. 13.75 inches in length. Condition is very good/excellent, having one small metal eye and picture frame wire set into the back. I did once have the eagle that went with the banner. However. When I moved several years back, the eagle was left behind and has since disappeared. It is my hope that someone out there may have their own eagle in need of a proper banner. Up for auction is a very unique Vintage Odd Fellows Ceramonial Sword-E.M. Platt Boston. Mass. Well aged patina on all brass/bronze surfaces. There is one spot near the bottom of the scabbard where the brass is discolored. There is some wear on the blade near the handle from opening and closing the scabbard. The blade is in very good condition with a few areas of spotting. The handle is made of wood and has some wear marks and some black paint worn off near the blade. The sword has a slight bend when looking down the blade. The handle has slight play of aprrox. 1/16" rotation. On the Brass cross member there is a castle. Three pillers, and a lamp. On the other side is IO with two swords making an x, the"All Seeing Eye" and OF with two swords making an x. The sword maker is E.M. Platt Boston, Mass. The sword in inscribed with ... morethe words" Aquidneck Encampment" on one side and the name John D. Dike on the other side. Surrounding the inscriptions is a gold tone. This auction is for an American Red Cross Promotional Sign for Boston Red Sox World Series Tickets for donating blood in 2007. This is when the Sox were going to the World Series in 2007. The Red Cross had a promotion if you donated blood in 2007 you were entered to win tickets to see the Sox play in the World Series. These signs featured a picture of Fenway from the 2004 World Series. These signs were featured on the American Red Cross Blood Drive Supply Set-up Trucks. This sign is laminated plastic. Very heavy duty, with a glossy finish. Measures 41"x55" The sign has some thumbtack holes in the corners. Some of the edges the plastic laminating material is peeling, there are scuff/scrapes in some areas and dirt scuffs in a few areas. I have taken pictures of these issues. Back of sign is white and has some scuffs here too where ... moreit rubbed on the truck. This was outside in the weather on a vehicle. I will be rolling this sign up for easier shipping. Up for sale is a YMCA of Greater Boston trinket box from the North American Urban League in October 2002. The lid features a drawing of the iconic YMCA building and the sides depict a city scape view of Boston. The inside and bottom are lined with black felt. There are closed tears at each of the folds, but the text on all 4 pgs of each document is very clear& bright. The first document consists of a resolution of Thanks to Col. Augustus P. Martin for" the successful formation and management of the military and civic procession on the seventeenth instant. In honor of the completion of the Army and Navy Monument on Boston Common" from the City of Boston Board of Aldermen. Dated Sept 24, 1877. It is signed by John Clark, Chairman, and Benjamin Pope, President on Sept 27, 1877; Approved and signed by Mayor Frederick Prince. On Sept 29, 1877. The proceeding 3 pages are dated Oct 1st, 1877, signed by Augustus P. Pearl) Martin. Chief Marshal(who became Mayor of Boston ... morein 1884) This 4 pg document was to Major B. F. Meservey. Note that the current Soldiers and Sailors Monument was apparently then called the Army and Navy Monument. The second document is another resolution of Thanks to Col. Augustus P. Martin for'the very efficient and satisfactory conduct of the procession in this City on the 17th" on the 250th Anniversary of the Settlement of Boston. Located in Boston, Massachusetts. The pamphlet consists of 16 glossy pages in a thick cardboard wrap with an engraved crest in color on the cover. It measures approximately 5” x 7 ½” The pamphlet is in near mint condition with clean, crisp, bright pages and no tears or stains. The first page contains a photo of then governor James Michael Curley, with the page opposite a personal message from him. The remainder of the pamphlet consists of various photosof the interior of the State House. Curley(1874-1968) was one of the most colorful Massachusetts’ politicians of the 20 th century. He served a prison term for fraud in 1904 while ... morea member of the Board of Aldermen. His popularity. However, did not seem to be affected by his conviction, and he later served 4 terms as mayor of the city, 1914-18, 1922-26, 1930-34, and 1946-50. During his last term as mayor, he was indicted for mail fraud, and served out part of his term as mayor while in prison. He was eventually pardoned by President Truman for both of his convictions despite Curley’s connections to the Irish mob of the city. He was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1934. He ran for Senate in 1936, but President Roosevelt’s lack of support cost him the election.
