I want to start by saying"I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS MAP IS AN ANTIQUE OR A REPRODUCTION" I do know that it came from an old estate here in R.I. I also know the only thing better than an interesting old map is an interesting map that is nicely framed. This map was originally engraved in 1729 then reproduced in 1869. In the right lower corner is written Photo- lith. by George H Walker& Co. Boston. Please study all the pictures this map is very interesting. Nowhere on the map is written Massachusetts. The British flag appears in two places the South Battery and the North Battery(see last photo) Nowhere can I find an American flag. It has all the favorites like The Common. Long Warfe and Beacon Hill. The Charles River has a ferry crossing. Study the pictures and you will find a lot of interesting things like the ships in the harbour ... moreare flying Union Jack British flags. If you live in Boston see if you can find where you live or work. The back of the frame is covered with a plain paper that seams to have some age. There are two old I screws on back with some very old wire for hanging. The paper on back has not been removed. There are many great maps out there but this I think this one has such great detail it makes it very special. The dimensions are 16 3/4 in by 12 3/4 inches. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges and a few minor specks as usual, nothing distracting, otherwise it is very clean with a nice anttique quality that would frame up nicely. The pre-revolutionary-era city map of Boston has very good detail- it shows the layout of the city streets in Charlestown and Boston. However, there is an earlier copyright date of 1860 along the bottom margin in small print that states"Entered according to an Act of Congress in the year 1860 by Augustus Mitchell in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 1/2 by 13 3/4 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page(31x39cm) with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good to Very Good condition for its age. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a couple of minor spot, light edgewear and slight oxidation of the orange pigment, some browning on reverse, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that is rare to fine in this condition. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. Scarce 1940 New York World's Fair American Legion Boston Map Walking Cane
The cane is wooden. And has a retractable map of Boston inside of it. One like this sold on eBay for $274.00 and the seller indicated that the map appeared to be silk with a thin paper layer- that looks right. The map is in quite good condtion, with some slight staining along the outer edge. The map is not dated, but reads: IN A CANE Display Co. 53 State St. Boston, MA. Sole Distributors, Patent Pending, All Rights Protected" Not sure what the wood is, looks to be birch on the bottom part, and maybe a maple on top. It is approx. 35 1/4 inches long.
