Samuel Drake: 1798-1875) Noted author of numerous works who opened the first antiquarian book store in the U.S. in Boston in 1828. Samuel Drake was the original founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1844 and was their President at times over the years. Drake made trips to Europe. Especially London, Edinburgh and Paris searching for rare volumes to sell in his Boston book store and for research for his future books that he authored. This folio edition of"THE HISTORY& ANTIQUITIES OF BOSTON. THE CAPITAL OF MASSACHUSETTS& METROPOLIS OF NEW ENGLAND, FROM ITS SETTLEMENT IN 1630 TO THE YEAR 1770" is Samuel Drake's personal proof copy which is specially bound in highly decorated gilt moroccan leather; vol.2 of a two volume set; 381 pages(page 459-840) published by the author in 1857. NOTE: outside binding ... moreinterestingly not titled but states"BOSTON BOOK- DRAKE 2" use scroll bar to see all 12 photos included) This galley edition was used by a Publisher to make 100 more copies for the general public though this copy has 116 original plates bound inside that are not included in the public copies. It includes copper and steel engravings as well as mezzotints and wood cuts removed from various original sources some dating as early as 1727 up to the year of production in 1857(see fourth photo above of 1727 copper plate engraving on laid or cotton"rag" paper) Also of particular importance is Drake painstakingly cut out windows on blank pages to mount these original plates too allowing both sides of plate to be viewed before he had them bound into this proof copy which obviously took him numerous hours to accomplish let alone all the years he spent in Europe trying to acquire them. The last two photos are from an 1876 auction of Samuel Drakes' rare book collection that was held by his son after his death. There are several very small tears along the top edge and a couple of tiny ones along the other edges. Map Size = approx. 22" x 29" This map has never been folded. So it will be rolled for mailing.
