The Watering Places and Places of Summer Resort This is a detailed map wherein the scale is roughly 1" represents 10 miles. The emphasis is on rail systems. Please see the picture to see the actual area shown and excellent detail on this map. The condition of the steel plate engraving is as shown in the high resolution scan. There are no tears. Rips or damage. This plate has some age toning as should be expected. The paper is single sided with a pressed fold in the middle. Overall this 165 year old steel engraving is in very fine condition. A New and Correct Plan of the Town of Boston Issued Oct. 1775. London by Gentleman's Magazine Fine antique engraved city plan printed in the late 18th century. Depicts"Charlestown in ruins" to the north of the city. With individual buildings damaged as a result of fighting during the Battle of Bunker Hill. Within the city itself we see a military magazine below Cambridge Street, as well as a Military Battery on the Common. Beacon Hill looks as if it were part of a mountain range, a fortification block is seen at the bottom neck, at the start of orange street. Noteworthy for its historical significance. As the map was created for distribution to the English public at the start of fighting in Boston during the Revolution, shortly after the attack on Bunker Hill. A reduced version of Pages map. In Good+ to near VG condition. Well ... morepreserved overall, light minor age wear, blank margins have been trimmed all around to just outside neatline, some moderate offsetting to bottom panel as seen, mounted long ago at the four corners to a much larger sheet of paper. Great Mid Century illustrations– It is a 1964 map and unfolded it measures 29 3/8ths by 18 ¼ inches. One side shows highways for Massachusetts. Ultra Rare 1940 New York World's Fair American Legion Boston Map Walking Cane
This cane is uber rare just by virtue of what it is. A retractable map rolled up in a cane. They were a limited production and just didn't survive. This really unusual cane is wooden, and has a retractable map of Boston inside of it. The map appears to be silk with a thin paper layer. The map is in very good condtion, with some slight staining(see photo) and could use a new tip. The map does not have a date, but says: IN A CANE Display Co. 53 State St. Boston, MA. Sole Distributors, Patent Pending, All Rights Protected" The cane shaft appears to be made of birch or maple. The curved top is another natural wood of some sort. It is 34 1/2 inches long. The map begins at 14 inches from the bottom, and is 13 inches tall. Total length is 35"We did a lot of research on this cane and the more we did, the more we found out how rare this ... morecane actually is. We were able to locate one value estimate but it was dated almost 2 years ago. The value range was $150.00-$200.00. It is a huge map. Almost three feet wide by two feet high(33 by 23 inches, to be exact) and extremely well engraved. This very large map. Titled"Boston After the Great Fire. presents a view of the City of Boston focused on the area which had only recently burned when this map was made 140 years ago. This is an incredibly detailed map and it is the precision with which this map was engraved that makes it great. Filled with details which it is virtually impossible to adequately represent in a scan. Very prominent in this map is the area of approximately 65 acres of the city that were destroyed by the"Great Boston Fire of 1872, ... morewhich had occurred only weeks before this map was made. There are literally thousands of engraved features in this map. From the ruins of buildings delineated in great detail to the fireboat in the harbor pouring water on smoldering wharves. Beyond the burned district are various prominent buildings of the city, identified in small lettering in the margin above the map: the State House. Faneuil Hall, the New Post Office, the Custom House, the Old States House, City Hall, the Old South Church and several other churches. The scans at the bottom of the page will give you some idea of what this incredible map is like. But it is so large that my camera and scanner were inadequate for representing it properly. This is a fantastic piece of historical memorabilia. A great relic of the City of Boston made almost a century and a half ago. A vintage tilt top table for chess or other games, featuring a map on top of Boston 1775 The map is titled" Plan of the town and endevirns of Boston with the Attack on Bunker Hill in the peninsula of Charlestown the 17th of June 1775" This table is sturdy and made of solid wood. It measures 21 3/4" tall with the top tilted in the upright position. The base is 16" by 15 1/2" Table top measures 19" by 19" I am unsure of the exact age if this piece. There are no labels or marks on this piece. It is in nice condition with a few scuffs in the wood and a little dirt on the table top. Intense tiger-striped grains, cleaned original finish, great detail, dark golden brown hues, nice patina, unusual and elegant design. It has a raised and carved face and a 1" wide inner gesso frame. Very solid, tight, NO separation/age shrinkage to the corners, some wear to the old original finish. It holds an old restrike of a bird's eye view of Boston. The print is in excellent antique condition with no stains or rips, does have some wrinkling. The face frame is about 4" across and measure approximately 23" x 27 1/2" outer dimensions, 16" x 20" inner dimensions. Side 2 of one portion contains the map of the Twon of New Marlborough on a 12" by 15.5" with the remaining 12" by 15.5" portion blank. Location: Side 1: Town of Sandisfield. Scaled 200 rods per inch plus inserts(scaled 30 rods per inch) of New Boston and West New Boston villages withing Sandisfield. Vintage City of Boston Map by Currier and Ives
This auction is for a framed aerial view map of the City of Boston. The map is in great condition. I do not know the exact age of the print. I only know when it was published. It's on thick paper that looks very old. I believe it to be very old. I just do not know for sure. There are not any other markings on it except for what is pictured. Info about the map: Published by the New York firm of Currier and Ives. This dramatic and colorful birds eye view observes the city from the northeast. It places the eastern waterfront with numerous ships, wharves, and warehouses in the foreground. A variety of important buildings and localities are identified in the lower margin, but are not clearly linked to specific buildings in the drawing. As is characteristic of Currier and Ives urban views, the buildings in the immediate foreground and center ... moreportions are shown in the greatest detail, while the upper half of the drawing is generalized and buildings only suggested as the city fades into the background. Without knowledge of the 1872 Harpers Weekly view. One would assume this to be a portrayal of the city as it existed in 1873, the year of publication. However, this view does not show any of the destruction resulting from the November 1872 fire. Granted the burned district was quickly rebuilt within one to two years, but in comparing the two images and considering the acknowledgements in the Harpers Weekly article, Parsons sketches of the city, from which the lithograph was derived, were apparently recorded before the fire. Charles R. Parsons and his father Charles Parsons. Who became head of the art department at Harpers publishing firm in 1863, were involved in the production of approximately 40 urban views during the last half of the 19th century. Generally these views, and especially those drawn by the son, were published by Currier and Ives.
