This auction features a very nice 1901 antique double-page. Highly-detailed, multi-color map of Boston, plus two maps on the back: a full-page map of Cleveland and a full-page map of Baltimore. The maps were published by George W. Cram, Chicago, Illinois, one of the premier map makers of the era. The Boston map has great features and details. It shows roads within the city. Plus many major roads in the suburbs that existed in 1901. Also, railroads are prominently shown, as well as ferry lines, terminals, and points of interest in and around the city. The Cleveland and Baltimore maps also show similar features in great detail. The Boston map has a total page size of 14-1/2" wide x 22-1/2" long. And an image size of 13-1/4" wide x 19-3/4" long. Both the Cleveland and Baltimore maps have an image size of approximately 10-1/4" ... morex 12-1/4" The condition of all of the maps is excellent, with no holes or tears in the image. 1847 Railway Map from Boston to Worcester to Springfield. MA and to Fitchburg Though these are not large maps. They are highly detailed and presumably very accurate. These rare 1847 maps are part of a series of steel engraved maps that delineate railway routes within a given area. In the upper right corners of the maps are descriptions of the routes which are as follows: On map 6, Boston and Fitchburg and Worchester routes; on map 7, Western R.R. to Springfield, Boston& Albany route. So, basically together there are routes that travels from Boston to Springfield, and from Boston to Fitchburg. There are also other routes through the area including the Nashua& Worcester Railroad, Connecticut Railroad and Norwich& Worcester Railroad. In addition to the several different rail lines. There are waterways and any other bodies of water; ... moreand of course, there are roads of consequence. There are many, many towns, most if not all still viable today. The condition of the steel plate engraving is as shown in the high resolution scan. There is a slight tear on the fold crease on the right side which does not enter the map area; otherwise no damage. This plate has some minor age toning as should be expected. The paper is lightweight. Single sided and has a fold in the middle as the result of being folded in the book it was removed from. Overall this 165+ year old steel engraving is in excellent condition. With proper matting. This map could be nicely displayed with no restoration or indefinitely preserved in its acid free crystal clear protector and acid free cardboard, both of which are included with your purchase. The size of the maps is approximately 7" by 5" not including the margin area. Below the lower border are the engraving's attributions including the date of 1847. Printed on a laminated heavy card stock(front is glossy as issued) original outline hand color. Includes a detailed inset city plan of Boston at bottom left, a tiny plan of Worcester to the right of it, 10 tiny engraved views across the top and bottom. Due to the nature of the tiny engraving work, the map could easily be considered a"miniature" The 10 tiny views and map are all set within an ornate decorative border. And they highlight sites and historical attractions from throughout the state, including Turner's Falls, Northampton from So. Hadley, Springfield, Pawtucket Falls, Pittsfield, Bunker Hill Monument, State House, ... moreInsane Hospital, etc. In VG. Mostly clean condition. Some light spotting and toning- mainly to margins, not infringing on engraved area, small pin hole to each corner. Otherwise map remains clean and very well-preserved, attractive. A rare early 19th century miniature map which does not appear once within the cumulative Antique Map Price Record 1983-2011. Tooleys Dictionary of Mapmakers does indeed note this map under the Goldthwait entry. Although we observe that the engraved date of 1838 appears to have been re-worked, perhaps indicating there is a previous issue of it. Goldthwait apparently was known for pocket and wall maps as opposed to atlas maps, and this curious production would thus fit into his output. Sheet measures c. 7 1/4" W x 5 1/2" H. It was published in Boston. By Thomas Groom, in 1843. We could not locate another available copy worldwide. The fashion for almanacs can be traced back to Renaissance England. But the peculiar genre gained broad popularity in eighteenth and nineteenth century America. In addition to providing handy guides for daily living; weather and harvest information. News digests, commonly used conversions and calculations, aphorisms and advice, etc. many almanacs left space for owners to record their own journal-style entries into the calendar pages of the book. For many early Americans. Then, the almanac became an essential part of daily life- a diary, a guidebook, a reference ... moretool, and an icon of personal identity. This also meant, of course, that they were"used up" much more fully and more rapidly than most other books. This book is part of the legendary printer and up-state New York native Samuel Nelson Dickinson’s 1843 Boston Almanac. Each issue was printed in runs of approximately 100,000 copies. Because almanacs were such small. Yet heavily-used books, very few survive to the present(and very few of these are in good or clean condition) It's bound in brown cloth with a gilded decoration on the front cover(the hourglass and scythe that were typical symbols found in most almanacs) Based at 52 Washington Street in Boston. This is a Circa 1900 map depicting railways and routes of trains for Wards 4& 5 in the City Of Boston. Massachusetts. It shows the Massachusetts State Prison, the rail yards and routes, The Boston and Maine Railroad Union Station{Which became North Station} and the surrounding streets. It was created in a scale of 200 feet to the inch. The large"antiqued" and gold gilt frame measures 31 1/2" H x 41 1/2" W. PLEASE NOTE: THE FRAME GLASS WAS BROKEN AND REMOVED.
